I've left this message on the series page, but I thought it best to post here as well. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Note to Scanlation Groups: Please do not pick up this manga! I am a graduate student doing an MA in Theory and Practice of Japanese Translation and am translating this manga for my Masters dissertation! If this manga is translated into English in any form, I will have to scrap all of my progress and choose another manga to translate, which would put me way behind and could potentially cause me to fail my course entirely. If you must scanlate/translate this manga, could you please wait until January 2016? It would be greatly appreciated. smile Thank you!

P.S. - I can provide my translation, including a possibly cleaned and typeset version (to the best of my ability) once my dissertation is complete if any group would like it.

I wonder if this message won't have the opposite effect...

May I ask why exactly having somebody else translate it would ruin your progress?

Also, even if everybody who saw this message wanted to comply, it still doesn't mean that somebody else won't translate it - it's not like every single manga translator is a member of this website...

The professors wouldn't know if he had copied the scanlator's translations or not.

Also, a lot of scanlators really don't visit this site often, so you're better off contacting (demographic) groups about it.

MU doesn't allow people to claim series btw.

Best of luck to you OP

He should be greatful that his series isn't Shounen or Seinen, because despite his plea, if the story seemed mainstream, action-packed, and interesting, this message would have had the opposite effect and we'd see plenty of troll scanlators making your education life a living hell.

Josei series are usually read by mature females, and females who read feminine manga are usually understanding members of the human race. So you should be fine.

But that manga cover does seem romantically appealing. I really wish you luck. eek

Well it's a pretty new series so I don't think it's a problem if scanlators wait for chapters to rack up before actually scanlating it. I don't see how the OP's post would have the opposite effect though. (not to mention it'd be a total D-bag move for a human being).

Good luck to the OP. Your dissertation sounds like it'll be interesting.

Also would welcome the sharing of your translation once it is complete. However it is also understandable if you do not....

Well it does no harm for the person to announce it. I'm sure MU will let this slide if it flags the forum. It's not like the OP is being rude about "claiming" the series.

It is the same effect as saying "don't look down" or "don't touch that" and you factor in anonymity.

That's how you get trolls(human D-bags).

People will go a long way for "jokes" that have no punchline.

The sentence that entices them is "could potentially cause me to fail my course entirely".

A standard Troll objective is to hurt someone you don't know for no reason.

Hi guys!

First off, as Tiannu said, if the series is picked up and translated into English, whether it be just a translation or a scanlation, it is no longer viable as a material for me to translate because my professors won't know which translation came first, especially since I'm not allowed to post my own translation online in any way until my dissertation is finished. Should it be picked up, I would have to choose another material to translate, and since I must translate 6,000 words of English by the start of September, choosing another material would set me back so far that I would be unable to finish my dissertation in time.

I understand that while not all scanlation groups and translators use this site, it is frequently checked by people to see whether or not a series has been scanlated or licensed, and the title of the series will also appear on web searches, including the ones my professors will run to check that my work is my own. I figured that I would post this here in hopes that, should someone see it hasn't been translated, that they would see my post/comment and hopefully wait to publish their translation until after January 2016.

I am not trying to claim a series, per se. Other groups/people are completely free to translate/scanlate the series in any way they wish. I'm simply asking that for those that do, to hold off posting their translations online until my work is done. smile

StaticHD, you are quite correct. If it were mainstream and appealing to many people, there would be an extremely high chance of this being picked up. Which is exactly why I've avoided such series. I originally intended to translate older series by Moto Hagio, ones that have gone untranslated for several years, but eventually decided on this one because, as a female otaku myself, the subject matter appealed to me. Considering I have to write a total of 10,000 words on the subject, I wanted to work with something I'd enjoy.

As mysstris mentioned, it is a very new series, however the copy I have is already part of the third reprint (from June 5, 2015), with the initial volume release only a month prior (May 5, 2015) proving that, while it may not be popular to English readers, it is certainly gaining a readership in Japan. I considered it a risky move to choose this series, as there was a higher chance than my other options that it would be picked up, but decided to go with it anyway, and hope that no one does. And while it is true, smatster, that there's always a possibility of trolls posting translations, one can always hope, right?

Sorry for the massive wall of text, and thank you all for the good luck wishes!

Just took a look around the Chinese version, and people are saying that it's really popular on pixiv.... I would contact some of the josei and shoujo groups just to be safe.

Also, this looks really interesting!

Hey there! We'd love to release the series under our group's umbrella once you're done with your dissertation. I'll send over a PM so we can talk things out a bit more. Best of luck!

I would have picked something slightly older and complete series that hasn't been touched. I don't understand why it has to be a new series. You're running the risk of another group picking it up. Especially Mangalator may pick it up and they wouldn't care.

I'm pretty sure I've seen public raws of this floating around on raw sites. I'm going to agree with others and you may want to do a novel instead. A series like this has a high chance of getting picked up if it has easy access raws. But best of luck to you either way.

Lhianna, the creation of this thread is bringing unnecessary attention to this series, which is probably not what you want to do. You wouldn't want a troll to scanlate this series on purpose just to piss you off, right?

The key to making sure you maximize the probability of a series not being picked up is to stay low profile and pick low profile series. If you're concerned about the possibility of this series being picked up (either now or while you're working on it), you may want to consider picking another series.

Generally speaking, the most uninteresting manga series are the ones safest for you to translate. Although they may be "boring," they're probably the best choice if you don't mind doing it strictly for educational purposes.

Old series are a great choice since the good ones would've already been picked up, leaving behind only the ones people don't care about. Series that lack public raws are also a good choice since there aren't too many groups out there that purchase and translate their own raws.

(On a side note, this thread may be construed as you trying to lay claim to the series. As the others have mentioned, that can't and won't happen here on MangaUpdates.)
