As in a King of a kingdom, country or whatever.
A king in times of war, like Shiro monogatari, The lazy king,
Preferably swords and magic, or just sword kind of setting.
There was one manga that I read back then, It was about this guy who became a king and was slowly getting insane, at some point, if not the end, he fought his friend. He also had an evil secretary, attendant, or whatever you want to call him, but was still loyal. So if anyone knows or remembers that, tell me.
Any recommendation about that kind of story line, manga, anime or light novels, will be appreciated.

Do Demon Kings count or female rulers?

Yeah, that's fine, as long as it's sword and magic, or just swords.

Superior
Boukyaku no Haou Roland is sort of a king. I don't wanna spoil it
Magi Is a magi and they choose kings. Plus awesome fights.
Masca more of a romance where the male lead is demon king
A Night of a Thousand Dreams not really focused on action, but a great read. One of my faves
immortal Regis is a sequel. It fits I guess, but I'm don't really like it. It's good, but kinda frustrating
Noblesse it fits better later on, but loosely.
Red River romance dominated yet still very action packed.

You can never gone wrong with Kyou kara Maoh tho the story turns a bit darker at the latter part of LN
Junni Kokki is a great series too. I dont remember much anymore since I watch it about ten(?) years ago. But the impression is normal teenage thrown into paralel world to be queen of one of the twelve kingdom.
Another good one is Saiunkoku Monogatari
Edit: Tenkuu no Escaflowne
Thats all I can remember for now
