Hmm I am looking for a manga with older female younger male shounen/seinen romance where the age gap is between 1 and 3 years and the characters are in elementary/middle school/high school. Can someone help me out?

I have some more series that were not mentioned in the first post

Clannad -
Spoiler (highlight to view)
the female lead is actually a year older than the male lead because she had to repeat 3rd year

Mahoromatic -
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Well technically, the male who is 14 is older but the female who is an android and was built 9 years ago has the body of a 19 year old

Summer Wars -
Spoiler (highlight to view)
the male has a crush on his senpai who is one year ahead of him

Tasogare Otome X Amnesia -
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Male first year of middle school x Ghost girl who died 60 years ago when she was a third year in middle school

I can't believe this hasn't been added to the list : Korean drama Queen of Reversals.

Do yourself a favor by avoiding spoilers, just start watching it : I assure you, there is a reason why I recommend this series to the list. biggrin

(Don't be fooled by those promotion images.)

I hate how the male looks older than the female in the vast majority of these manga. Would be nice if the male actually looked younger once and a while.

Kumiko & Shingo Series

I have only read Chinese scanlations (I'm still studying but that's the best i could do for now so some of this may be wrong) so other than the main character's names, I can't really put the names of the other characters as I only know their chinese names. If necessary, I'll just put their names in Kanji.

It has a surprisingly original take on this kind romance. It shows the development of the relationship between a young boy and his 7-years older girlfriend over the years. The manga starts when Shingo and Kumiko are 10 and 17 respectively, not long after they met. They fell for each other after Shingo saved Kumiko from a wild dog. The manga shows what they grow through from when Shingo is in Grade school to early college.

Their relationship is quite interesting. In the beginning, everyday, Kumiko would show up outside Shingo's grade school and walk home with him at his embarrassment. It actually looked more like a older sister-younger brother relationship. But then, again, given how young Shingo is at the beginning, there's not much they could do together as a couple other than hug and hold hands. However, their mutual feelings for each other is quite apparent to everyone in the manga from the beginning. Kumiko calls him her "little prince". Shingo is less willing to express his feelings but does so at times when they're both having problems.

Unlike Dear Mine and the few other mangas that have taken on the whole young kid/teenager romance thing, this manga doesn't try to make it less weird by having Shingo become the mature intelligent kid like Fuuma in Dear Mine. On the contrary, Shingo is a hot tempered brat in the early chapters of the manga when he is still in grade school. He easily snaps at people. He gets embarrassed about his relationship with Kumiko too, and gets easily jealous of other guys showing interest in her.

Kumiko herself, is not that much mature than him. She‘s the stereotypical shoujo protagonist---clingly, clumsy and a crybaby. A lot of times, Shingo acts more like the adult in the relationship despite being clueless about what to say to her. There are times, however, where she scolds Shingo like a little brother which irritates him. Their relationship is quite interesting and amusing.

Their differences in maturity do end up being a problem for them especially when Shingo was still little.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
She once scolds him for trying to get his smart friend to let him copy his school work. He laughs it up by telling her not to be surprised as he's sure she's probably done stuff like that at his age which she denies. They end up having a big fight for a while, but they eventually reconcile

As the years pass, they do start acting more like a couple.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Their first kiss is when Shingo is in middle school and Kumiko is in college. At this point, he is taller than her. The last page of the last issue which takes place 5 years after the ending, shows that they are married with twins

It's also interesting to see the role their friends and family play in their relationship as it grows through the years.

The parents of both characters are surprisingly okay with it. Shingo's parents, who themselves have a big age difference, love Kumiko. His mom would sometimes tease Shingo by having Kumiko do "mother-daugther in law" stuff with her. Kumiko's younger brother is completely against their relationship.

Kumiko's best friend,麻生 initially opposes it and tries to set her up with another friend.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Shingo punches him in the nuts.

She later decides to accept it and support her. 西崎, The guy she tried to set Kumiko up with becomes interested in 麻生, but she never really seems to return it.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
After college, she agrees to move in with him as roomates though.

There's also 五郎, Shingo's cousin who's in his 20s. She initially gets a crush on him and Shingo becomes insanely jealous but, with his help, only realizes that she was interested in him only because he is what Shingo would look like when he gets older. From then on, 五郎 becomes something like her relationship counselor, helping her with her relationship with his cousin.

Most of Shingo's friends like Kumiko but often tease him about her.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
One of his best friends would ask him questions about how far he has already gotten with her, seeing as she was already a grown up, which results in him getting his hit with a chair.

Another friend of his is a rich boy genius type who's almost like Fuuma in Dear Mine except more friendly. He initially seems to be interested in Kumiko, which of course, she doesn't return, but still pisses off Shingo. Being the more mature one who could understand adult relationships more,
Spoiler (highlight to view)
especially after seeing his parents divorce
, he ends up giving Shingo advice about Kumiko just like the former's cousins with her.

There's also of course, their other love interests. Both of them have suitors they're own age, most noteably, a classmate of Shingo who has been in love with him for years. She remains bitter throughout the manga about him rejecting her confession in the beginning of the manga.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
She criticizes his relationship with Kumiko which results in him calling her a pig.
ALthough, she does some pretty bad stuff, you eventually feel sorry for her. [
spoiler]She gets over him and starts to return the interest of either the rich friend or Shingo's other best friend, although in the final time skip, she appears to remain single[/spoiler]

PersonalIy, I'd call it the most realistic take on an unrealistic romance, considering how old they are at the beginning. I really enjoyed this manga and would recommend it. Unfortunately, there's no english translation. I'm not sure if we can post links to raws though.

Well I'll assume you've only just started watching it, but the 'Younger Guy' in question, which is the Chaebol Son of this series, is seven years her junior. smile wink grin (It's similar to Rude Women in terms of the age-difference, but that's where the similarities end - after the love triangle kicks off, women everywhere start swooning lol.)

It starts off really slow in the beginning, but I implore that you watch until the very end - I promise that it'll pay off massively!

Spoiler (highlight to view)
20th episode with the kiss and was pleasantly surprised of seeing an ardent admirer in the chaebol son
........I dont find it similar to rude woman though the young man persistently pursuing the woman is there but with the brashness and arrogance, it is actually very similar to oh! my lady with chae rim on the guy's side and for some reason bears some resemblances to women who want to marry....the 29th is like a cliff hanger and the last episode 31 is still raw but had to watch it to make sure a happy ending is there...Thanks a lot for this recommendation tho biggrin ..
eyes was a good tho long series, i like how
Spoiler (highlight to view)
she maintains a frnshp wth her husband and he actually did try to be a good husband and provider...
and u dont feel that he doesnt deserve it unlike other series like rude women....

THANK YOU for the lovely detailed summary!!....

.....I can see and drool on the attractively interesting plot already...it is so hard to determine how good a manga is from browsing through the raws and perhaps a scanlation team might just pick it up thanks to your description .

.....I now cant wait to read it...it is something I kind of always liked, a large awkward age difference and exploring how the romance matures over the years...it is even more delectable with the fact that the progress is depicted which most mangakas dont usually draw/write about- 95% romance mangas are about the initial part- development of attraction/love and it ends once both parties communicate this wth each other...and of the few who do go into the relationship part, it usually rocks between suitors..."even though we are in a relationship, I may step out anytime to fawn over my ex or your best frnd"-Gadzooks!!- they make it all whinny like parfait tic and bokura ga ita..

..oh yes, its against forum rules to post links to any sort of scan downloads in the forums ...

Oh ok thanks.

Ya, it doesn't touch on the beginning of their relationship as they're already somewhat together in the beginning. They just fell for each other after he saved her from a dog. As the manga progresses however, they do talk about how they fell for each other more, especially when they especially, mostly Kumiko, try to defend their relationship.

I'd like to see the mangaka make a oneshot prequel to the manga to show how they first met.

Oh, it's such a shame that you skipped the episodes, as the best thing about this series is the development of the relationships and triangle (once again, it IS pretty slow in the beginning, but in the process, you get to see the character development and pretty much fall in love with every person in the cast. biggrin )

One thing that's memorable is that this time, it's the Second Lead who got the girl he loves, rather than the main guy. Halfway in the series, Yong Shik took center stage while the First Lead goes to the background, and the love story swung in his favor, which is mind-boggling because Korean dramas never, ever do that. When this drama was airing, people were on the edge of their seats, half crying because the Younger Guy/Second Lead really IS the better guy of the two! They were dying to see what was going to happen. laugh

(Oh, you could've just asked me if they ended up together instead of jumping straight to the end, that way, you could anticipate it better!) bigrazz laugh

(You can find complete subs at darksmurfsubs or the first half at harusubs. biggrin )

Oh, btw, their characters have seven years age gap as well. wink (Yong Shik 30, Tae Hee 37)

Aah Thats why they do those prequel stuff...I never usually like them but for series I love, its amazing....it is strange the beginning isnt that much elaborated since every manga/series usually focuses on that and why they shouldnt be together...

I think the reason for that is that it was love at first sight for them. Kumiko certainly describes as that several times. Yamada Nanpei seemed to do a new take on the whole "unexpected love/you can't help who you love" formula. They're clearly a couple already in the beginning despite not being to do much given Shingo's age. So the reason why its not elaborated much in the beginning is that the manga wanted to cement the fact they were pretty much a couple and that all the characters know it already from the start.

I'd actually like to see a one shot talking about the parents (especially Shingo's) reaction to them being together. They are simply shown to completely behind them despite how young Shingo was in the beginning.

I looked at the entries on the prequels of that manga, it looks like they're also about age gaps, just the reverse.

Oh, btw, correction on the Kumiko Shingo series. They're actually a series of one shots which is why they have separate titles. Then they're followed by the 10 volume series, How to be an adult which is set when Shingo is in Junior HIgh and Kumiko is in college.
