Hi I'm looking for a tough female lead, not just physically, but mentally. I'm really sick of female characters that can't do anything on their own. It would also be great if there was some sort of a romance, and preferably not ecchi. It would be great if it were josei, but shounen and seinen are okay as well as long as the female is the lead. THANK YOU! biggrin

Basara (completed) - She has her emotional moments, but overall, she's strong physically and mentally. A real fighter.

Saver (completed) - "Cool" fits the female lead the best, but "badass" works too. When you read this story, you can really understand why the characters ending up looking to her naturally as a leader. Very charismatic. As much as I love the heroine, I should warn that plot is rather... confusing. Also, you should consider volume 1 as a prologue and the real story and setting does not really begin until volume 2.

A Generation of Military Counselor (Novel) (ongoing) - The MC is an ex-SWAT police detective who gets sent to (pseudo) ancient China. Tough and clever lady.

None of those suggested have any overt romance, however, they all contain strong female leads that are relatively unique.

Shut Hell
Chang Ge Xing
Afterschool War Activities - The female lead is apart of a collection of protagonists; though according to what I remember she is the strongest.

Red River is one of my favorites with a strong female lead. I'll have to go through m
y list again to find any others like that.

Arakawa Under the Bridge - physically strong(o) /mentally strong(o). Most part is comedy but it also contains serious/romantic sceans.
Black Behemoth - physically strong(o) /mentally strong(o). Male lead and female lead are strongly each other but I'm not sure it's romance. At least you can see the very strong female leed.
Chikita Gugu - physically strong(o) /mentally strong(?). Female lead is man-eating monster and raise male lead to eat later.
In Full Bloom (YON Jae-Won) - physically strong(o) /mentally strong(o). Female lead is assassin who try to kill emperor. It contain very little ronmance but it has very goon storyline. And badass female.
Karubania Monogatari - physically strong(o) /mentally strong(o). Female lead can beat most of male charicters. And not care much about other people's opinion about herself. Actually charicters in this series are all mentally strong.
The Sensual M - physically strong(x) /mentally strong(o). I'm not sure female lead is badass. At least she is cool. This is not a story of strong female lead. but you can see the decisive, cool female character.

Oh! Lord Jesus - physically strong(?) /mentally strong(o).
Unstoppable Siblings - physically strong(?) /mentally strong(o).
They are just highschool student, so not physically strong. But they 'can do anything on their own'.

Hatenkou Yuugi - probably has one of the most badass female leads I've ever found in a manga

Rasetsu no Hana - Completed, however the last five chapters are not online, but this has been officially translated into English so it might be possible to get the last volume through your library.

Takane to Hana - Ongoing. This may not be what you're looking for, considering it's more along the lines of fun fluff. However, this has a very strong (not physical) female main character who is bold, cleaver, conniving, independent, and knows how to handle herself, yet her age is still believable. The synopsis might at first make you dismiss it as some clishe average shoujo garbage, but it has yet to disappoint me in how it manages to make something that should be typical so original and funny.

Try these:

1.) Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko
Best 4 Koma I've ever read.

2.) Otoyomegatari
No fantasy but good read.

3.) Arachnid
Not a girl manga.

4.) Claymore
Every Otaku has either seen or/and read it.

5.) I-Revo
Cute read.

6.) Superior
High Fantasy.
