My ratings tend to be much harsher than the average reader, partially because I love ripping things apart but more because I take the number value of the scale literally. 10 is "flawless," 5 is "average" and (0), if it existed, would be "complete and utter waste of paper." As only one or two titles I've read could possibly drop below a one anyway, that's not a huge loss. My ratings average to about a 5.2, and form a bell curve with only some slight distortions, so I'm relatively comfortable with the accuracy of my system, though occasionally I get PMed because my review of a manga I gave a 7 (which is pretty respectable score) seems "sarcastic."

If we look at the whole scale, it's something like this:
10- Flawless (execution, storytelling, art, symbolism, everything is perfect.) Only one title out of hundreds has received this score, and I am skeptical that another ever will.
9- Near perfect; minor flaws.
8- Exceptional, but flawed. Common problems that knock a title to an 8 include characterization and pacing issues, but general excellence is expected in most categories.
7- Significantly above average. This sort of story tends to be quite good in two or three particular aspects of note, but tends to suffer from problems in several others.
6- Above average.
5- Average.
4- Below average.
3- Significantly below average. A three is the most common of my lower ratings because there tends to be something redeemable or interesting about the work which compels further reading, but the piece generally fails across the board.
2- Awful. There may be one or two average-level aspects to the story, but everything else may very well cause the reader to regurgitate.
1- Completely rotten. There are no merits of even average level to be found.
[hypothetical 0]- Printed garbage. There is literally no merit, substance, or enjoyment to be found in this work.

That's usually how I go, but I do a lot of .1,.2, etc. so yeah.

1 - publicly execute the mangaka, onegai.

7 - fine (if the scanlation is not finished, I might buy the official translation)

For me whether or not I like a manga depends on 3 things: Art, Story, and Scanlation Quality.

Story being the most important. The other 2 could be amazing but if the story is bad then there's no hope for it. However, the better the story the more I can forgive faults in the others. Except for poor translation.

EDIT: after posting here, I thought about it a little more and I changed my opinion. Since the rating should help the people who consider reading the series, I also rate like that:

10-8 The series was good (good art, good storyline, interesting characters, maybe nice comedy, gives you the right feeling) AND I liked it.
7-5 The series is good, BUT I didn't like it, because I usually don't read stuff like that or I found something annoying in it
4-2 I didn't like it AND it was really bad. i could imagine that many people would find this is crap
1 - probably no manga deserves that, because even if the series is totally stupid, it's hardly believable that there's not even one good point (if it's a professional manga the art can't be THAT bad)

In my rating there are many differences. Sometimes I like a series very much, even though I know that it is really bad, to be honest^^. And if a series has a story that i got tired of, that annoys me I will still give it a 6 if the art is good or the series is really creative.

About giving a 10... if I completed a manga and liked it really much I would give it a 10. Then I would reread it and go down with my rating. Usually it a 9.? then.

I don't rate manga on how perfect each element is or can be since perfection cannot theoretically be reached. The most important factor in reading a manga whether it has a deep and complex story or great character development is how much I actually enjoyed the manga. In my opinion all other factors don't make a huge difference as long as I enjoyed the work thoroughly.

10 - Enjoyed it immensely; it was such fun to read; complete addiction
9 - Very enjoyable; a fun read; addicted
8 - Enjoyable; addicting
7 - Average; not much enjoyment, fun or motivation to continue reading
6 - Did not enjoy it for x reason(s)

As you can see, enjoyment is the main factor that makes up my skewed ranking system. It should be obvious that there are manga that are simply more fun to read than others and there are manga which are simply worse than others and I rate based on the moment. There have been times where I rated a manga a 10 right after finishing but later revised the score and lowered to an 8 or 9.

I do it all by feelin! A month or so ago I decided to make a rubric to rate my manga. It is horribly complicated and unuseable just because it's complicated. I left no guess work and made it so even if a manga was epic it might only get an 8 and not a 9 or 10 because I didn't 'laugh till I busted a gut' or 'felt a warming love'. So I either make a new rubric for action/adventure, romance, comedy, etc if I wanted it to work. In the end I stopped trying seeing as how I don't care that much.

Anyhow thischinksays got close to my current feeling on rating, Minus addicting on number 8 and below 6 I just drop without bothering to rate.

I usually rate the manga mainly on the storyline and art style. If the manga is aimed specifically on a certain theme or focus, then I rate it on how well they portray the theme. For BL/bara, they usually don't have much of a plot (some have a really good plot, though ) so I rate it on the steaminess , the art style, muscle and dialogue (some usu. have dialogue which wrecks the entire ... thing...). I strictly rate shounen manga because some just go astray from the original story, and then I'm left confused! So I guess it'd be like:
- 10: Excellent!!!! (Worth reading again, likeable art, ... , perfect!)
- 9+: HOT (May be worth reading again, likeable art, humour, etc.)
- 8+: Very Good! (Likeable art, story, plot, etc.)
- 7+: Good (reasonable plot, etc)
- 6+: OK (Let down by some factors)
- 5+: Unsatisfactory (Not to standards)
- 4+: Bad (Not worth reading)
- 3 and under: ***** (**** ***** waste of my ***** time ***** )
It really depends... it'll lose some points from certain factors...
BUT I love manga!!! I usu. look at its ratings before reading it any way. nothing scored 5 or under as yet!

5 : read the end but skipped some page/chapter.
6 : not bad but i'll not re-read it
7 : good
8 : really good, i'll probably re-read it at least 1 time
9 : awesome in many point and i'll re-read it when i don't know what to read.
10 : incredible, i love this manga to the point i already have re-read it at least 10 time (or i can)

but in reality, due to the fact that most people rate 10 when they at least liked the story, i tend to give a bigger rating than what i intended to do (10 should be really really rare but in the end i give it too much....)
And it's generally a choice of the moment, from my first time reading. Some i was sure i'll love it even after re-reading but in the end i tried to but find it pretty boring...

According to my complete list, i rated 10 to all of them except for summer wars....Overall, this is how i do rate manga

10-Keeps me read until the end and nvr had enough of it
8 -The story doesn't suited my taste, but i read till the end
5 -Ok. but stop read it not even half way pages

After all, before read any manga i will search the one with the interesting story line, higest recommendation and rating from other readers...
