When my friends have a problem I usually try to distract them. Since I'm pretty good at getting things off track and catching people in my flow, I'm usually somewhat successful.{/quote}thats what i try to do, as well.

but if it doesn't work, i just use my skill with words to comfort them and make them feel better.

Quoting. Your doing it wrong.

I have always found a case of beer and some porn to be comforting, so I might offer that.

My friends never get uncomfortable around me!
If they would be, I'd tell them to feel comfortable. ಠ_ಠ

Well most people dont know what to do when their friend is depressed or sad or has a major problem. But I think just showing them that you're there and care sincerely for him or her is enough. And hugging!!! Lots a hugs! Guy hugs are okay too. Anywayz hugging someone or patting their sholder realleses some kinda hormon which makes people happy and feel better so its important. You also need to listen to what that person has to say even if you dont have a selution or any words to comfort them just listen and care about it... you'll do just fine.

Punch them in the chest and tell them to be a man.

Doesn't work if friend has boobs though.

You win, good job. Though you've just guaranteed that I'll forever avoid you when I'm upset, even though it wouldn't work on me. And if your alternative is your second post,

it just provides me with more reason to maintain that position.

Though there are several friends of mine who would benefit from that kind of comforting.

I'm not exactly great at the comfoting thingie, but generally I'll just listen to what's bugging them and then try to cheer them up. No hugs, though. I'm not big on the hugs.

I purposely trip in a stupid way, which never fails to get a smile out of them. xD I also offer hugs even though I'm not much of a touchy-feely type. I'll do just about anything to cheer up a friend.

I'm not so good at comforting. More often than not I make a total idiot out of myself, and I guess they are comforted by the knowledge that they aren't as hopeless as I am smile wink grin

Load up the car, and head to the beach with stuff for a bbq/bonfire and plenty of alcohol. Spend the night under the stars just talking/drinking around the fire and then pass out in the car. Works pretty well for me regardless of gender. biggrin

If they're your friends than you should know what to do unless you just don't know them all that well and just using you for comfort. It also depends on the type of problem your friend is experiencing.

Usually I listen and try to relate and tell them my story, and how I overcame it, without judging them. Otherwise I just listen. I give positive input about what they said to me and afterwards, probably do something like sports or things we enjoy.

Might be a cruel way to do it, but that what makes people come to me for advice: Be as honest as you can be about what you think of their situation, tell them both side of each situation. (Usually romantic relationship turning bad.) It's like, if it's their fault, tell them plainly what it is and how they screwed up.

Also, logical doesn't mean you can't deal with emotions. When someone goes overly emotional on you, lead them back on the logical path. If someone per say...is crying over someone's death. You first lead them to think how the person was toward them, and how they would usually be together, etc etc. Then you can finally kick them with a "And if they see you like this?" You know the rest.
