Well, just to share experience. There are lot of type manga that I don't like and I usually avoid them no matter what after looking at summary, genre, and art once or reading the first chapters. But there were manga that I did avoid, but once I read more when I dead bored, I can't stop read all the chapters and it became my favorite. Those are

Hayate no Gotoku!, didn't really like butlers and stupid misunderstanding, but this one hell funny. Vol 1-26 are the best

Shokugeki no Soma, I thought it was just weird cooking and ecchi manga. I love it for the cool plot now

Nanairo Kakumei, I hate bullying manga, moreover with this typical weak female lead and childish shoujo art, but this turnout that both the bullier and the bullied are deep and amazing character. it has best character growth and twisted plot. It also has my favorite kind of male lead. It's the best shoujo ongoing for me now and what I wait the most everymonth. I even ordered the raw tankoubon from Japan so I can enjoy it physically. (Fortunately, I can read Japanese a little)

Soredemo Sekai wa utsukushii, poor female lead got wed to prince/king? Too good to be true for me. I hate cheap and shallow setting. But this manga actually good, everything else are done very well and to my liking

Fruits Basket reading the first chapters hurt my eyes and reading fron the middle made no sense. Try to hold it once and easily enjoy it after 3 chapters. This manga is so deep....

Aoba-kun ni Kikitai koto I hate shy character x prince character the most. It always cheap drama full of the prince character saving the female lead. But this one is the opposite. The shy female lead grow and try her best to save the prince. Her hard work really admirable and I really proud of her now

What about you guys?

Yotsubato!
At first I didn't really care for what I was reading, just read it because supposedly it was good and eventually I tuned into the humor of it. Sadly most stuff works the opposite ways, like Berserk which I read 20+ volumes in 2 days. Now it's just garbage. Can't really think of other examples for manga that sucked first, because if it's shit at start, I just drop it.

Watashi no Ookami-kun - I thought it was the typical popular male lead/ordinary girl shoujo manga, but then I really loved the kind female lead! The plot is really interesting, too.

Mori no Takuma-san - I'm not a fan of overweight male leads, but this manga has an awesomely cute and kind male lead, I can't help but love him <3. The manga tells about the girl's journey to genuinely love her boyfriend based on personality, not looks.

Lan Chi - I don't usually read mystery - and I usually only read romance... But I love this manhua to death. Barely any romance so far, but the characters, plot and the suspense is amazing! Then after about 5 chapters, I completely fell in love with it, even when there's no romance.

Usotsuki Lily - Not a huge fan of crossdressing if the male's doing it, but this manga is awesome.

Red River or Anatolia Story
I stumbled across it a few years ago because I was looking for a strong female protagonist in a shoujo. My first impression was, "This thing is long!!!" and because of that I didn't invest any actual time into reading it. I mostly just kinda skimmed through it quickly and didn't notice anything special (accept for the ending scene. It stuck with me for some odd reasons.) So 2 years after I first stumbled across it, I was thinking of an ending of manga that I didn't remember, and I just have the urge to read it again just because of the cute ending. (I don't know about you guys but I love when flashbacks happen, because I get to revisit old manga. Most of the time it is for the better, but sometime it makes me wonder about my younger self and what the hell was I thinking.) Anyhoo, after searching through all of my complete list, I finally found it and started to invest some actual time into reading the manga, and it was AMAZING! I spent all night reading it and when I finished it was 7 in the morning, but instead of going to bed, I reread it again and just skipped school (Kids, don't do that. It is bad for you).
Because of this, I began to give lots of manga a chance. Tokyo Crazy Paradise and Basara were another example. I didn't read them at first, because the art was not the typical girly, pretty, shiny eyes shoujo manga art style, but now these three are my holy grail!!! (and I can't stand pretty girly shoujo gals anymore).
Funny how your taste changes xP
