I never got the hatred for the second half of the story. I thought they did that very well.

The only manga I could think of was Balancing Toy.

Lots of western readers are Puritans.

Hmm, I'm going to list some "Childcare" and you can read about it and see the cover to see if it fits your criteria. But most of them are not about adoption...

Amaama to Inazuma kinda of...?
Yotsubato!, everyone reads it, but maybe you don't know about it...
My Girl (SAHARA Mizu), single father, has a little bit of drama, but positive drama hahah
Barakamon (too much of a stretch?)
Flat (AOGIRI Natsu), teenager takes care of a little boy
Chichikogusa
Love So Life a guy ends up taking care of his brother's twins, but it is totally shoujo, all sparkly...
Baby, Kokoro no Mama ni! kinda crazy...

For the similarity to love and hate Usagi Drops receives, there is Otaku no Musume-san and its plots twists.

Though I will say this.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I was okay with Daisuke and Rin ending up together because it mirrored his grandfather and her horrible mother (God, I've read so many manga where the mother just abandons her child usually with the excuse that "it's too hard" and they are already forgiven in the end and usually conveniently have a new family/child that they are able to raise properly. I want some where they are basically told to fuck off because they are horrible people. Rin's mother fits that. I would have told her to fuck off.)

The thing that annoyed me was that it kept hinting at Daisuke liking the mother of that kid who's Rin's best friend. Apparently during the time skip, they did date and then broke up. Felt that was kinda unneeded because they had good chemistry as well and I wouldn't have minded him ending up with her.

Usagi Drop was nothing compared to the absolute shit plot twist that ruined Otaku no Mesume-san. That twist ruined the rest of the manga for many people because of how bad it was. Especially considering...

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
He spent how many chapters pining and flirting with the land lady? Then in 1 chapter, "Oh, she's happily married to your boss and you now have no fucking chance with her." It also handled his depression that came out from that revelation terribly as well. If it was out in the open from the beginning, it wouldn't have been bad or mattered, but it wasn't. Nope, the Mc just gets strung along until it comes out finally.

The father/daughter relationship was nice, but the romance in that manga was ABSOLUTELY terrible.

Another good example of a terrible plot twist would be Onani Master Kurosawa.

Re Otaku no Mesume-san, well, surprise ending makes a story memorable. It was clumsily handled though.

Regarding Onani...that seemed perectly true to life to me. People get rejected by the one they love, even main characters in manga, all the time. And then the rejectee will normally find someone else who actually wants HIM.

I think what annoyed me the most about Onani. Him and her had such great chemistry. Her and that other guy didn't. And then He just gets pawned off on some random chick at the end. It was incredibly stupid.

It was done horribly like Otaku. I mean, before the twist, she never even interacted with the annoying guy she ends up with. It was stupid.

Short-term "adoption" and has some mature events going on alongside, but might try Aishiteruze Baby. The hero Kippei doesn't actually "adopt" his 5-year-old cousin Yuzuyu, he just takes care of her because her mother ran away after a breakdown and no one else has the time to watch her. He's only looking after her until her mom can get her act together.

Another series with temporary semi-adoption is Shirogane no Nina, which is available on CR as Silver Nina. The hero is an unemployed man who comes home after a long time to find himself having to take care of his niece for his sister. I haven't read a ton of it but what I have read is really sweet.

Finally, maybe a real stretch, but if you don't mind ecchi comedy you might try Chokotto Sister. The hero's mother got pregnant years ago and he really looked forward to meeting his little sister, but she suffered a miscarriage and became infertile. He later prayed to God to make his mom healthy and asked Santa to give him a little sister. Years later, the hero's in college and a "Santa" on a flying motorcycle delivers a tween to him (apparently making sisters takes a lot of time). He then has to take care of this girl who has absolutely no one but him and basically defines her very existence as "Onii-chan's little sister".
