Hi everyone!

I've had a lot of time on my hands and when that happens I read a lot of manga and lurk a lot on this site. I was surprised to see that on my profile, 2017 marks my tenth year in having a profile here at MangaUpdates! Man, ten years. I was 13 when I was first lurking around here.

This site is seriously the only site I have consistently, regularly visited after all these internet years (I mean, except for Google, but that doesn't really count). Even MySpace or Friendster didn't stand the test of time. I am super thankful to all of the people who keep on making MangaUpdates a very reliable website to check info about manga and to help me in finding the next good read!

That said, I'm curious. When did you guys join? Did anything prompt you to join M-U?

I'd also like to invite people to check their completed lists on here and see the oldest "Date Changed" on there. I have a number of manga completed on May 5th, 2007: Aishiteruze Baby, Children Can't Choose Their Parents, Cruel Fairytales, Kodocha, The Vampire & I, Ludwig Kakumei, Magic Kaito, Mekakushi no Kuni, Oneesan no Jijou, Penguin Brothers, Slice of Black Chocolate, Sora Sora, The One I Love.

I have no idea what Sora Sora and The One I Love is all about now. But this was probably my Kaori Yuki phase! I loved Count Cain and read all of her other works it looks like bigrazz . I also really liked gothic manga back then... I also still perfectly remember Penguin Brothers, Aishiteruze Baby and Kodocha. I just recently reread Kodocha and it's really one of those timeless shoujo manga. My taste hasn't changed much, but I veer away from anything really gothic or horrific nowadays. I like my sadness in literature and expect fluff and romance from my manga.

How about you? Anything you remember from looking at your oldest completed manga? Has your taste changed since then?

TL;DR answer the questions in bold!

Hope this topic isn't too similar with anything else in the forums dead dead

Congrats on your 10th year!

I've been on MU for 8 years apparently, since 2009 (so I was 14 when I joined wow), though I'm sure I lurked for a few months on/off before making an account. (Interestingly enough, I actually still frequent most of my old social media haunts, so MU is actually one of my more recent/newer accounts, if you can believe that.) I don't remember at all what pushed me to make one. I think it might have been the downfall of That One Big Manga Reader Site that convinced me to start following scanlators at their source, and what better way than MU? Whatever the reason, I'm glad I did because I could've never continued keeping up with manga without MU's helpful lists feature.

And, sorting by "Date Changed" revealed a huge string of manga I added when I first joined. I'm not going to list them here because there's way too much, but needless to say, my taste has remained roughly the same. I still remember liking most of the manga I liked and hating most of the ones I didn't, though there are a few more that I'm more ambivalent towards or don't remember. I remember I used to be a huge Takahashi Tsutomu fan though, and would read anything he wrote with impunity. I really should get around to reading Skyhigh: Shinshou actually.

I joined fairly recently as previously I just kept a notebook of what series I followed and whatever was the latest chapter I'd found. Needless to say, I was pretty stupid not to have realized there would be a convenient site for just such an idea. roll eyes

Congrats on 8 years for you!

Oh wow. I wonder if I know that site you're talking about. I remember one other site I went to for manga and it has been shut down. I also remember going to mIRC a lot... And that memory just feels ancient.

I'm not very consistent in blogging or like that. I think I made everything: xanga, livejournal, neopets, gaiaonline... none of which I go to now. Cool that you have though!

Isn't it crazy how taste relatively remains the same? eek Takahashi Tsutomu seems cool! Maybe I'll check him out when I'm in the mood for something dark eyes

Hahaha! How long have you had the notebook?

I joined 2011 because my word document, where I used to log entries of manga I've read/chapters I'm on etc, disappeared. By a string of fate, I managed to find baka-updates where I also found the function of keeping track of your progress when reading lol.

So this will be my....6th year. Time really flies by, almost scary.

The manga I added when I first joined are tooooo many to write here, I almost feel like I sat for 2 hours straight (maybe?) just adding manga. So a whole lot of them.

I like baka-updates, it's simple and a kind of...how to say..."I mind my business and you mind yours" kinda site.

I joined in 2007 (holy crap, almost a decade ago) when I wanted to find a site where I can keep a tracking list of the manga I've been reading. I became interested in manga while browsing bookstores, and my paper list was getting too big for me to manually keep track. Et voila! I found MU and have been here since.

It's rather scary how so many things have changed in my life as I grew up, but MU has remained my homepage to this date. smile Thanks for being here!

Oh wow, seems like people did their own system before they joined. I just kept track through my downloads lol.

I get what you mean. There are many ways people can do their own thing here.

How I feel about it too! It's been a nice, unusual constant. Especially with the anime Baka-Updates shutting down.

I joined 6 years ago. I was using this site for a while before that though. I think for about a year. Anyways, I first used the site to find new manga to read but eventually realized I needed to keep a list of the manga I was reading. So I thought about it for a couple months (how much of a bother it would be to try and remember the names of all the manga I read and add them to a list), and then finally joined.

My tastes have definitely changed. I started with reading shoujo, then moved to shoujo smut, then moved to yaoi. I occasionally read something other than yaoi, but that's about 98% of what I read. Well I guess I haven't changed all that much since I'm still obsessed with romance (or more likely smut).

As far as my use of the site, that's changed too. I feel that I used to be a lot more active. I'd spend a lot of time in the forums having debates and discussions. Or trying to think of original poll ideas. Now I don't do that as much. I still come here to update my lists, but I only go in the forums if I see an interesting topic on the homepage. I feel like after a certain amount of time the same topics come up again and again. And I don't have anything new to add

Don't really frequent this place that much nowadays. I don't read manga anymore. I've read a couple web comics here and there, but don't really know what goes on. Been 10 years for me as well. Some have been quiet, some I've been here way too much. Essentially my social life was here around '07-'09.

I joined in 2008 but i never bothered with the completed function, especially as i was a decade long comic reader at that point. I also follow the manga scanlation scene since the very early 00s but the need for keeping a list only came after noting that keeping a mangatraders list wasn´t cutting it anymore, by a long shot.

Ive been a member since 2012..
Its been almost 4 years and 6 months...
i really want to know the first manga that ive completed but sadly ive costumized my list through the years...
So the information may be a bit unrealiable if i rely on the change date...

Joined 2012 when I felt like I couldn't keep track of my reading list on my own anymore. Actually surprised that it's only been ~5 years.

Only a few years now. Previously it was mostly just the Shonen Big Three and graphic novels I picked up in bookstores. Then I started branching out and it was too much to keep track of with memory alone, heh.

I joined MU in Feb 2008. Took me almost exactly 12 months from when I started reading manga before I registered here. It's hard to tell what my first completed manga according to my list is, because it took me months before I decided to transfer my manga list from MAL to here. So I've got a bunch of series completed the same day (the move day).
Still, I'm pretty sure the first manga I completed was Death Note - I didn't really read manga before it (only watched anime). And the DN anime got licensed and fansubs dropped it, I decided to read the manga in the meanwhile.

lol, same here! I used notepad since it was so simple, and when my computer blue screened forever, I lost like over 1000 titles. I even had like a rating system for it too (like *, @, !, +,).

I made my account here in 2007, and I came back around 2008-2009 and started getting more active and adding my lists here. It was super tedious but I think my entire lists is like 90% complete now. Manga-updates has helped me tremendously.

My taste has changed a bit. From sappy shoujo mangas to yaoi >__>;. I blame loveless.

I'm not super-active here anymore since I work full time, but I try to post like 1-2 per month haha.

.~*~*Congrats to everyone in the 10 year club*~*~.
