@essie: don't have proms normally have alcohol? in our prom it was free, too. and you could drink anything you want: beer, wine, vodka, etc... i thought it was like that in other proms, too.

I would assume that it depends on the legal drinking age. In the US its 21, but I know that is other places it is as young as 16, and others countries don't even have one.
Here, you go to the prom for about 20 minutes, and then leave to get drunk.
Or if you are like me, you don't even go to the prom, you get high and watch Rocky Horror Picture Show with drunks, and jump in the pool in the middle of the night.

Ah. Everything makes sense now. At least at my prom there were free drinks so if it was legal, then we'd probably have that too. XD There was a chocolate fountain though that was yummy!
shaggievara: I think you can do that more often than you can go to prom.

Yah I did. Got really bored halfway and it wasn't really that fun since I was a real loner back in hs... There weren't any alcohols since all of the students were minors and I attended a private catholic school. So yeah it was really boring.

Went to both my proms.
Paid for everything for both my dates, because I insisted, not because of some mandate from the school.
Yes, I bled money in June.
Both proms were fun, but for different reasons.
First one was fun because I asked my date out in a pretty creative way imo, my group was chill and no one in the group had any trouble getting dates, mood was great even when our limo got lost, and the location of our prom was nice and roomy. I had a clingy date so I couldn't really dance with anyone else, music was subpar as usual with a school sponsered dance, and our group didn't have an afterparty but it was still fun.
Second one was fun because I had a date that didn't mind switching partners while dancing, school FINALLY stepped up and hired an awesome dj from one of the major radio stations in LA (I think it was either one from KISSFM or 105.9), our group rented out an ice rink for our afterdance fun (broomballing at 2 AM is insanely fun and as a bonus, there's no hangover the next day) and entire grade really was bonding by this time. Some negatives were group drama, a half-ass way of asking my date out on my part, and having to deal with a date that somehow became clingy AFTER the dance was over. The dance itself was still great overall.
I really don't understand all the prom hate in this thread. Most of the excuses I've read here seem like the typical excuses from people who are too afraid to step out of their comfort zone. Not everyone who goes to prom are meat-head jocks who are loaded up on Red Bull and vodka guys. Yes, proms are expensive, but it's a one time thing and if you're a girl, you get to keep your dress and shoes.
Even experiences that seem bad, will be something to look back on and laugh when you're with your friends.
And this one is for the guys: Do NOT use the excuse that you can't get a date. You do not have to be in love with a girl to take her to prom and even if you haven't talked to any girl before, get your friends to hook you up. Hell, one of my friends asked a girl that he talked to maybe twice before the dance and they were one of the couples who had the most fun at the dance.

True, they're hiding themselves behind irrational excuses.
I think I have my first prom this year, I'll definitely go!

Haha, I was told by my principle if I went to the prom, I couldn't dance with my date.
I wouldn't have danced anyways, but it sort of pissed me off, so we stayed behind.

Well, yeah, that's just unfair!
I wouldn't go to an event where they'd limit me in any form or shape.

Well, I was told it was for my own protection.
Which, I guess I understand, there was a 80% chance if we had, one of us would be stabbed when we went out to the parking lot.
Why do I say this so cheerfully?

Loved my prom!
I never got to asking a date because time wasn't on time because I found out that my prom was in less than a week after I came back from a "short" vacation from school....
But as in all proms, there will always be some girls that go solo to the prom w/ their girlfriends.
In all, the food was awesome.
Entertainment enjoyable.
Chocolate fountain was raped.
But too much dancing for me though...
Sometimes going stag to a prom can get you various dance inquiries considering you aren't constrained to your date. (Sometimes)
After prom, I drank some cold whiskey and vodka to numb out my pained legs w/ a couple of friends in our hotel room...
Good times. Good times.

ahahhaa.....my prom didn't have alcohol.,.... those drinks and food and all the other stuff....you had to pay for them.....it was part of the dues you had to pay for the prom.
How in the world does something like a prom discussion end up in the +18 section is just beyond comprehension....

Yep, had a great time too. I went to an all girls school so it was mostly girls. We invited all our guy friends as our +1s but mostly it was so they could come rather than as dates.
No booze til the after party.
I miss high school.

Well we don`t have that kind of a prom like in the US, but we had some sort of a graduation after-party.
I didn`t go, cause I knew it would basically suck and it did.
Most people just drank themselves into coma, someone made a strip-tease, some highly-unlikely-to-hitch-up people were going at it on the field near the place. Some girls boyfriend showed up and made a scandal etc.
I am glad I missed it, but I had my own party with my own friends. That was awsome.

Couldn't get some fan such as myself to protect you?
I would have loved to watch you dance with your date. +_+
