did I see that someone just diss one piece?

compare the amount of story/text in OP to any shounen, you will have your answer. entire naruto chaps's text can fit on 5 or less of op's chapters. bleach is just plain stupid now, should have ended the manga in soul society.

what other famous fighting manga is there?

Tenjho Tenge is better than One Piece. Shaman King is better than One Piece. History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi is better. And Bleach is WAY better than One Piece.

I could seriously go on and on. I haven't read a chapter of that in, like, 2 years. It's terribly drawn imo. Hell, it seems like a kodomo manga at times.

But that doesn't mean it's overrated. In fact, I don't really see a lot of people touting it that much.

Also, just because a manga is overrated doesn't make it bad, and vice versa.

Yeah sometimes I get sick of people spamming about how Monster is the God of all seinen, but that doesn't make it bad.

Quote from barbapapa
The best manga have the smallest target audience, therefor it is impossible for something to be overrated.

Just because a lot of people like something, doesn't mean it's "high-rated". On the contrary.

I don't see "overrated" carrying the same meaning as "popular". By overrated I mean manga where nearly their entire audience large or small all go "RAWRR THI MANGA IS TEH BEST!11!!!" AIKI has a decent reading audience and I don't consider that overrated hell the people who read don't consider it one-of-a-kind; a ton of people read Bitter Virgin and I don't think it's overrated.

Naruto, Bleach, Yu Yu Hakusho (and the list goes on..nothing can be that good to justify all the hype)
One Piece (I don't mind the art but..see what I meant for Naruto&co.)
Inuyasha (...will this ever end?)
Claymore (bad art <_<)
Sekirei (are those boobs or meat bags? Plus the first chick is 00ber-annoying)
Love Hina (cliche` to the bone, but it was a bit more fun than recent harems)
Tsubasa (it was good until they switched worlds...>.<)
Death Note (that got boring even before you-know-what)
CLAMP's works in general are too hyped up, even if they're good.
and finally Vampire Knight (I like it but...FANGIRLS CUT.IT.OUT...and stop worshipping fictional characters.)

Disclaimer: I liked some of those mangas. Look at the hype around some of them, multiply it by 10x (the amount of hype not posted on the internet) and then think if there exists a manga that's "perfect enough" to be worth all that hype.

Obviously, there is a lot of shounen-action manga that falls into this category, and a few shoujo-romances as well, but I'm going to ignore that for a moment and say Death Note.

Before anyone bashes me, I actually think Death Note is very good- it has an elaborate plot, moral and psychological complexity, and *decent* pacing. However, I don't think it's quite as good as it is consistently made out to be, paling in comparison to better psychological manga like Monster or Parasyte. I don't know if all the hype just comes from the fact that the anime is licensed or that it was serialized in Shounen Jump, but it certainly isn't anywhere near the best the genre has to offer.

No bashing here. I actually really agree with you on that point. Yes, Death Note is very good, but it's not great. Yet for some reason, among the people I know at least, there are a ton of people who think that Death Note is the one and only psychological series worth reading. Which it just isn't. Monster and Parasyte are simply better, especially because their plots stay well-paced and interesting throughout the entire series. Death Note, on the other hand, is good... then boring... then good... whereas the other two keep you hooked the whole time. Therefore, I agree with you.

Anyone who said Vampire Knight, you're totally right! Yes, it's a decent series. But it's not great. And even the obsessed fangirls I know sometimes have trouble following it because it's so darn confusing. Overall though, it's not like there's never been another vamp manga with hot guys as the main characters. It's just that VK hit a bigger audience. Just because it's got that big audience doesn't mean that it's fantastic. That'd be like saying that Bleach is as good as After School Nightmare. It's just not. Things like VK are fun to read, but they're not nearly as fantastic as the obsessed fangirls make them out to be.

Love Monster. I just... I just don't get it. The main character is such a vapid ditz! I mean, even in the whole history of stupid smut idiots she stands out. The plot's not overly original, either... it's a pretty typical smut, overall, yet it's still incredily popular with devoted fans... I just don't get it.

Penguin Revolution, and Mekakushi no Kuni by the same author. They're cute, they really are. They're just incredibly boring. I just don't understand why people like them so much, especially when they make me sleepy from boredom.

Almost anything by Shinjo Mayu. Just... yeah. I'm not even going to start explaining that one or I'll never stop.

Finally, Girl Got Game. So many people love it, but I just think it's a really, really bad copy of Hana-Kimi that's even less plausible.

Thank you, to people who said Vampire Knight, for finally making me feel that I'm not alone. biggrin God, all this time I thought it was just me. It's insanely popular. But I think it's just the art and the insane amount of bishies in it. Total fangirl heaven. Oh, and the vampires.

Yes. Yes. YES. Again, here I was thinking I was alone. The female characters are all weak and passive. The male characters are borderline rapists. Are Shinjo Mayu fans passive young girls waiting for their dominant prince charming to grab them by the arm?

Oh, and Love Hina. Really? This is the best romance story shounen can offer? The bar must be really low then.

Yu Gi-Oh. Seems like a big marketing scam for little kids to me. In the original series, Yugi would at least drive people insane and stuff with his powers (which is cool), but even then it wasn't all that great.

Death Note

Really, the vast majority of Shounen mangas.

I agree with all, except skip beat (which I didn't read so I don't know), and GTO. It's really good. And I think even underrated at times...

I also agree with Razil and lynzajw, about Shinjo Mayu's manga being overratet. So true... It's really pointless sometimes...

I'd like to add, that, sekirei is way overrated. I've tried to read this, but it was so stupid... I don't understand why it's so popular... Oh wait, I do... Big breasts attract the general public laugh

Oh yes, and how could I forget that... Midnight secretary... It's really kind of stupid, with bad characters and avrage art...
On the site that scans it, it became the 1# popular series... More than ludwig kakumei (omfg).. Awful..>.<

I think Monster is overrated, personally. It wasn't a bad manga at all, but I didn't find it to be one of the best psychological ones ever, and I don't like the fact that I can't say "I didn't enjoy it; it's not THAT great" without people telling me "you have no taste, n00b".

I'll agree with Vampire Knight and add Special A to that list. (Skip Beat, too - it's better than the above, but no, it isn't as amazing as everyone says it is.) Whoever said Mx0 is also right; again, it wasn't a bad series, but it was far from being the best out there.

But Inuyasha, overrated? I haven't found a fan of that series in a long time. Maybe a while ago, it was, but definitely not today; I'd say it's underrated *now* considering all the criticism it gets and the lack of fans who still like the series.

(I'm inclined to mention Nodame Cantabile here, but since I couldn't get through it all and haven't really tried in a while, it wouldn't really be right...)

I think Naruto is the most overrated manga. As others have said, nothing could possibly live up to all the hype. Honestly, I don't know why it's so popular. I mean, it's a pretty good shounen, but that's it. Definitely not the best I've ever read. Do people like ninjas that much?

The same goes for Bleach, only to a lesser extent because I don't think it's quite as popular.

There's only one Shinjo Mayu series that I really like and that's Ai wo Utau Yori Ore ni Oborero. The rest of them are like.. girl falls for guy after he tries to rape her. like who does that.. seriously. o_o

I hadn't realized Girl Got Game was popular. o_O yeah it's not the best.

Afraid im going with what a few have already said and saying Vampire Knight and Naruto.

Naruto (manga) seems to be fairly average...without anything special. I just couldn't get into Vampire Knight myself, i didn't especially attach to the characters or find the story of interest.

One thing i don't feel is overrated is Claymore, i totally love that manga and i think it has potential to be epic if it goes on long enough. Also whats the deal with the 'bad art' thing. Agreed the artwork in Claymore starts off bad (really sketchy etc) but i think it has awesome artwork later on in the series - it has a more detailed and realistic feel to it than a lot of other work.

I don't think GTO is overrated, because it's made of win. It always had me surprised and waiting for more, and had fantastic character developement. I'd say GTO is underrated rather than overrated.

I don't have much to say about Death Note, i think it's very good, so do a lot of people, i haven't read much into the psychological genre so i can't compare it with anything yet.

I think the general impression those people have is that you "didn't get it" rather than "didn't like it". There certainly are intelligent people with good taste that dislike Monster after reading it completely and comprehending it- it's just the vast minority.

I also want to take the opportunity to agree with Criminal Intent on the Haruhi and Geass anime. Although both are personal favorites of mine, the fanaticism surrounding both can be a bit extreme, heck, Code Geass R2 was one of the top rated anime on a number of sites after the first episode alone. That's unnerving and extreme if nothing else.

Also, saying GTO is underrated seems a bit off to me. If memory serves, didn't it actually win (or at least come in second) in the manga tournament we had here a few months ago? Obviously a lot of people know it and love it, it's just not vocally promoted as much as Naruto.

Naruto, it's really not that great.

Bleach, One Piece, I could see where people are hating them from, but really Bleach is a really young series if you look at what the parts are so far. They haven't gotten that far in terms of everything, then again Kubo doesn't know how it will end either so yeah. One Piece has an ending planned so Oda's just working his way there, aside getting used to the art it's a pretty solid series that deserves one of the top spots.

Death Note I never got the hype of, guy going around killing people with a book. It was way too much text for me to get used to and the characters were way too far off from me to even relate to.

So yeah, Naruto is my all time Most Overrated manga right now.

i just kind wanted to see if anyone agreed, the most "overrated" mangas are usually only that way because of rabid fans of the anime(naruto, deathnote, bleach, etc) so how does it come back to the mangas?
