I am actually ashamed of most of the music I listen to. I may talk about what I like but only with people who won't know what I'm talking about. I think it might be more productive to list the bands/artists i'm not ashamed of.....

anyways here is my list of "I am going to die of embarrassment if anyone finds out ever" shame
Godsmack (it's not justed that i liked them, I loved them- worst musical decision ever)
Papa Roach (this is inexplicable, lots of my friends like them - so it's not peer pressure)
Korn (but only when I'm with my sister )
Eminem
Musicals by Andrew Llyod Webber
Staind
Mudvayne (but only because I really love them or used to I might be comming down off that now)
Avenged Sevenfold (again I love them)
In Flames (Just started liking them and have yet to tell anyone)
Cascada

everything else is just traumatizing-ly embarrassing except Cake, Guns & Roses, ZZ Top, anything 90's or older (pop), pre 80's metal, grunge and a smattering of musicals.

I've gotten so much better, trust me.

so yeah, my mom tries to buy me CD's for my birthday because it's so easy. She gained this mindset by shopping for my sister - you just buy her some Korn or SOAD CD and she loves you - I am not so easy. I refuse to tell her what I really want because I am far to embarrassed to say. So she buys another copy of that Nickelback CD she loves to buy (I have 3) and supplements with something like the Killers which isn't quite my ideal.

sometimes I talk to much, but that's only because I am am try to rationalize embarrassing myself.
biggrin

I have one question regarding the three i left up there. Why?

I love older korn music, as i do a lot of nu metal bands. They help cheer me up when i am angry

I like all staind, there is no need to be embarrassed by liking them (unless you like 14 Shades of Grey the best, then feel free to be embarrassed)

And Mudvayne is fine, i love their bassist.

CAKE is one of my favorite bands.

I would hate to see your list before you got better laugh

Well I am especially mortified by Korn when I'm with my sister, they are her favorite band. It would be much easier if I hated them but alas! our taste in music is similar. she just talks like it is the 'best music evar omg!!!1' I don't like them like that but people tend to assume I do because we are so similar.

they are also responsible for many embarrassing lyrics I get caught singing.
"I just feel the craving.
I see the flesh and it smells fresh.
And it's just there for the taking.
These little girls they make me feel so god damn
exhilarated.
I feel them up, I can't give it up." I was caught singing that once sad and call me crazy but I find that to be a little embarrassing.

Plus it is one of the most well know nu-metal bands, I don't want to be lumped in with everybody who wears nu-metal t-shirts all the time. I don't of course but still.....
and then there is the fact that they are so mainstream, I would hate to have people think that my taste in music is so generic that I just turn on the radio and like what ever comes on. And part of the reason I like them is because they are so popular and mainstream, I mean I could never forget their name, I have gone to buy a CD from a band I think I might like only to forget the name and I end up buying something that is probably just as good but I only got it because I've heard of it. It feels like such a cop out.

and then there is the whole " They help cheer me up when i am angry" bit that people always say. I don't get a very angry vibe from them or from many other nu-metal bands .....I think I may be broken in that regard. I only listen to Korn when I am cheerful and happy. So every once in a while I have to either lie and just agree that Korn is excellent in that regard or I have to try and explain that I am not normal to yet another person.

.....

I am embarrassed by Staind because I honestly don't know any of their music nor can I tell the difference between any given song and another. Most of their music also annoys me greatly. So a typical day of me listening to Staind involved singing along thrilled with life etc. and swearing excessively.

I don't quite know how that is embarrassing but thinking about it right now is making me blush.

part of it is my perfectionism? hard to say

......

I think Mudvayne is one of the few bands that I take seriously. I treat most music whimsically so for me to treat it seriously is a big deal. therefore if I were to be criticized on my choice it would matter. therefore as I admit to liking them I of course project a negative response onto the person I am talking to and die a little inside. So it is a completely self manufactured shame but shame nonetheless.

.....
Cake is indeed amazing and delicious! It's pretty much the only band me and my girlfriends can agree on, so when we get together it's pretty much all we play.

sorry this is pretty indecipherable, and before my entire music collection would have been on there, except 90's pop which I have come to terms with as a horrible part of my childhood.

Hmmm... the most distinctive musician would be... Madonna. Of course I only like some of her songs...

Oh and there's one more: Morning Musume. Yep... they're very good when I get too depressed and when Converge or my other fav bands/music don't work. ;___;

Ha Ha, same here. Even though the Jonas Brothers' voices can bug me sometimes I still strangely like them (Camp Rock just reinforced me liking their music). Also I sadly like Hannah Montanna/Miley Cyrus music (not her though!). I mostly just like her lyrics.

I also have loads of Disney music in my car laugh

If I got ashamed of the music I like, I'd never be able to listen to anything! Everyone from the parents that first got me into the Christian music I listen to (losely. They pushed Steven Curtis Chapman, I listen to Pillar and Superchick) to the friends that can't understand why I'd listen to something no one in the world has ever heard of.
So, being ashamed of my music is not something I can do...the only thing closely resembling that is the smattering of classic rock songs I don't mind.
