Fruit Basket is not all THAT. It starts off well, but then towards end it sorta starts to drag on and whine as delve into everyone's sorrow. It forgets some of the comedic elements that made the beginning of the series fun. I guess my main complaint with the series is that it runs way too long and EVERY character is suffering from some deep awful trauma. Some of the drama between Tohru and Kyo that surrounds Tohru's mom seemed to be added filler to extend the story into more volumes to buy. I'd say the same of the twist with Akito. It really seemed tacked on and over wrought. I thought that the ending was good, though. But this is not a series that I would care to re-read like I do to a lot of other series.

But that's just me. I really like stories that get to the point and stay on track. If there must be sidetracks, then they need to be compelling enough or else I forget about the main story and tend to discontinue reading the series before it's done.

As for Shojo series, there are better ones out there. I'm a fan of Hana-Kimi and Ouran Host Club. I also like the manga by Yuu Watase, Arina Tanemura, and Matsuri Hino.

Fruits Basket is pretty good. The plot and characters are pretty developed. But no, it's not all that. I've read much better shojo mangas.

Maybe if Tohru wasn't so happy-go-lucky, I would've enjoyed it much more.

It's not the best, but it really is good. I loved it and I've watched the anime like 3 or 4 times over, but there are others out there that beat it. I'd still recommend it, though.

Well I am a huge fan of Fruits Baskets (manga & anime), at present I am up to volume 12, so I cannot say how it develops in the later volumes. The development is slow and sometimes I wish they would stick to the main story and I find reading it is sometimes difficult, but I think that this my own inexperience in reading manga. This is actually the first one I have ever read and probably wouldn't have, if I hadn't loved the series so much.
Kyo is probably the most interesting character and Yuki is a bit wet. The rest of the Sohmas bring entertainment and Akito brings the darkness. I've read that others find Tohru irratatingly pure, and I guess she can be, but I mainly find her refreshing, gentle and cute. This said it would be nice to see her find some spirit and rebellion within herself. I hope it continues to be excellent, though the other views have me slightly worried that it won't be. laugh

No it's not, it's not all that at all.
1. Main character is an IDIOT, most IDIOT female characters are supporting
2. Too many Bishies. The amount of Bishies per square meter in this anime/manga defies everything. I kno it's a reverse harem and all, but the amt of bishonen makes me feel like my brain is gonna explode.

I don't know if it is just me or not, but I sort of think that this manga is very dark in ways. I don't know why, but it just does.

I think that the art is pretty good, but don't really like the story plot. And I also don't really like the girl. (The idea of this manga about the 12 animals is a very good idea. eek )

I do have some character I like, but this is definitely not one of my top mangas.

No, its not.

If it was a Shounen/Action manga, and they re-did all the characters and made it awesome, it would be pretty sweet.

But as it is now, IT COMPLETELY SUCKS.

Much as I love Fruits Basket, I do agree that it is a little over rated as are many series. As soon as a series developes a fan base that raves about it peolpe start it expecting it to be 'all that' and are oftern dissapointed as it doesn't meet with their expectations. I think Naruto and Bleach have suffered the same way. Inevitably you end up either loving it or hating it.
I have watched the anime, but prefer the manga. Yes it does start out very light heartedly and turns darker once you get into it, but if it didn't have that darker side it would just be too sweet.
It's definatley a series that I would recommend to any shoujo fan, if there's any left that haven't already had a look. And I don't think there has ever been such a thing as too many bishies!

Um... I guess I'm like the only one who thinks this but...It's my favorite manga and I've read soooo many different series. I love it because it's one of those great happpy ending manga. It's my favorite series and after all the manga I've read it's still my favorite.

It's good, i liked it. I think that more than being overrated it's popular (with all the consequences).

Oh my! I just took a second to imagine that. now i really want to see that. there would be way more fighting, and it would actually have a point. There might even be silly quests and such. Tohru's skirt would be even shorter. Rin's boobs would be epic.

This might be why people occasionally think you're a dude.

But I think my biggest problem with Fruits Basket was its insistence on being a shoujo with shounen premise, yet instead of making characters cool because of the premise, makes characters dark and brooding. Sure, some people may like the whole, I can never, ever be happy because I'm so dark and brooding and attractive, but it's just not for me.
