no i didnt like it
its a bit cliche too and if you continue reading it gets predictable and boring
its not the greatest to read and not the worst i also think it recieved too much praise
no offense to those who liked it

i don't think it's "all that" but it's a really enjoyable read. it's not like every other shojo where it's drama after drama, fruits basket actually gives u a little time to enjoy what you just read and there's actual character development and a slow romance. personally i think it was really good and it's one of my favorites, but it's not something i would read from the start again(it's way too long xD). i don't think i've ever read a manga that's "all that" but its still up there. eyes

Fruits Basket is really not all that.

For one, Tohru is a HUGE sue. I found her annoying most of the time. Secondly, it has a lot of annoying cliches. I don't mind cliches that don't drag down the story (like in Dengeki Daisy... Teru is an orphan and is positive most of the time like Tohru, but she actually knows the right times to act happy, sad, bored, ect.... Tohru doesn't, she's just an airhead.). And lastly, Kyo just annoyed me xD... I liked Yuki.
I would have liked this a bit better if the main character wasn't so annoying though.

It's alright (not my cup of tea), but it's incredibly overrated to be honest.

You are like the dense main character in a shoujo manga.

It has a good story line but as the story progresses it became angst filled so I think it's just above average shojo manga.

Hmm... It was my first manga ever and I read when I was 12. (omg so many years ago! >_< )
And I loved it.
Even now I still think there are a lot of very interesting psychological aspects in this manga.
(Also to those who only read 4 or 5 chapters. It really gets better and better throughout the series, so if you've just read that, you've only seen the very worst of it. And the ending was quite good.)

I wouldn't say that it's the best manga that i've ever read but in my opinion it is one of a kind and you most likely won't find another like it.

It is all that!!! *^_^* this manga made me smile, cry and it moved me to no end. In my opinion, it is the best manga I have ever read. Kyo's story, her adorableness and their stories of lonliness made this one so worth reading. Also, the zodiac curse is so original >_<

Maybe it's not all that, but it's definitely one of my fav manga.
For the first time I read it like... 6 years ago? And I keep re-reading it every year or so - it's like my sentiment for this cute, heartwarming but also sad story is just too huge smile (and the supernatural elements are a big + for me ^^)
Also liked this psychological aspect of it - family problems, lack of acceptance, guilt that prevents you from moving on - it's nice to read a shoujo which isn't all about candy&flowers ("Oh, I've met him just today, he's so handsome, I love him so much, but he doesn't love me back! What should I do!" >_>). And development of relationships! It's something that annoys me in most of the shoujo mangas - they meet, they fall in love, they live happily ever after, and all that in 5 chapters. Furuba's way of dealing with romance is something I would like to see more often (when not everything is revolving around physical attraction, but THE HORROR, ther's a litte bit of reason in it) *sigh*
Anyway, I can understand why some people don't like it (it has a very specific pace and you like Thoru or you hate her), but for me is a title from top 5 smile

You just spoke my mind.

Then again, due to a great amount of boredom and curiosity, I skipped the chapters till the end. The art is definitely not the alluring point. Sometimes I ask myself how can someone draw like that and become a mangaka, when you compare it to all the other mind-blowing stunning art of other people. Secondly, the story is not all that sweet or lovely or heart-warming.
I think the most understandable reason which explains why so many people like it, is that this is the manga that is picked up the most for those who start to have interest in this field. Besides, it is published broadly in many countries.

Once you read enough manga, this one will just automatically fall in the typical, boring, cliché, predictable and plain category.

Now that I've had time away from it, I don't hate it, I own all the volumes, I've re-read it a few times, but it is not, and never was my absolute favorite.

I actually prefer her first series, Geneimuso, over Fruits Basket, and I only somewhat enjoyed the series that came after Fruits Basket (Hoshi wa Utau).

So in short, it depends on the person. I've read much worse manga, and I've read ones that I've enjoyed more, but in general I don't think it's that bad, it has it's moments, but there are also some instances where it can grate on your nerves.

So really, it depends on the person reading it.

Wow this brings back memories. My very first manga! Back when I read through it the first time it was awesome, but now when I read through it, it doesn't seem as amazing as I remembered. I think the only reason why I found it so good was because of the sporadic characters like Ayame and Kagura and Kyo.

And the metaphores, gotta love her metaphores.
