You guys reckon Bakuman will get it's own fanbase, as opposed to getting loadsa old Death Note fans behind it?...i reckon they're pretty different to say the least, and, imo, Bakuman seems to have had a good start.

They're so utterly different that it's hard to compare them. I mean, it's not like death note got its fanbase from Hikaru no Go fans.

If it gets a following, it'll earn it on its own. So far it's been alright, but honestly I don't think it's anything special.

Well there is also the fact that Hikaru no Go author isn't Death Note author. biggrin

No, but the artist worked on all three projects. My point remains the same.

Surely they are different, but do I think that having the same author and artist helps, I mean, you can expect it to have certain quality in art or story telling.

Bakuman and Death Note have the same author. Death Note and Hikaru no Go not. I don't see how you could make that comparison.

Death Note reference in the first chapter. Ultra-lame laugh.

It seems like Bakuman has the potential to be really good, and I also think that alot of people were disappointed with Death Note so hopefully the author will think this series out better and it wont turn into a piece of crap halfway through.

This manga is good in its own way. A way completely different from Death Note.

People are just as capable of following artists as they are authors. I just picked that example because it had a common person with all ofthem and is about as different from Death Note as Bakuman is.

If you want an example that uses authors, I can something like "Monster doesn't get its readership from Yawara" or whatever. It doesn't really matter, the point was that the genres are different enough that the author or artist doesn't have a significant following in that area of the demographic.

Normally, fans of an author/artist/whatever will give their new works a chance for longer than an author that they don't know anything about, but ultimately the manga will have to stand on its own or be canceled. Bakuman just has a higher chance of getting into a groove because of the readership that fell in love with Death Note.

Honestly, I got kinda tired of DN after volume 6 or 7 and stopped reading it... Bakuman looks like it will hold my attention for considerably longer if they go the route of professionals trying to get serialized and going through school at the same time. The fact that Jump allowed Death Note to get so mature gives me hope that Bakuman will be able to break the shounen mold in a similar way. If they fall into cliche high school love comedy I'll be very disappointed.

'm from the DN fandom, and I only started reading Bakuman cuz I knew it was by the mangakas of DN (well until I found out it was a SJ, then I would've read it anyways). But I got high expectations for Bakuman considering its mangakas.

well i've only read the first chapter.....but it definitly doesn't seem like it can compare to death note....nor do i say it happening, but i'll read the next chapter that's out and see if it changes my mind.....but regardless of death note.....it does seem like a good manga

and yeah like someone else said, since it IS the author of death note that wrote it, i am planning on giving it a good chance.......and honestly if it wasn't the mangaka of death note that did it, based on what the stories about and how it looks, i almost definitely wouldn't be reading it right now

EDIT.........well i just finished chapter 2, and my mind changed some...the main character isn't the typical weak-lame main character like i thought he was, and the 4eyes isn't the typical annoyingly arrogant side character type either (think Ishida Uryuu)....so yeah, character wise the manga works for me....

there's no deep or complex plot yeah.....but if and when it does get one, i think it can be a really good manga....but yeah, i like it alot

Bakuman will probably attract a different kind of fan base than Death note because

Death Note: Emo kid wants to purge the world of evil by writing names in his notebook.
Bakuman: Kid wants to write a manga so he can marry his girl.

It's just too different

Well they pretty much just advertiseed it as "by the people who did Deathnote" so they could get people talking about it to begin with. Because with only 1-2 chapters out it well be pretty hard to judge how well it well do.

Once they get more chapters/volumes under thier belt it wel have developed its own fan base, they just trying to use DN as a starting point, as any smart person would do.
