Hello,

I am very glad and grateful for the creation of this new field, as I know this will greatly increase the functionality of the website.

However I have a few concerns with the system:

-What about Western manga such as Gothic Sports, or Malay comics such as Helios Eclipse and other works by KAORU? I don't think these should be put under a 'manga' section as that would be inaccurate. Personally, I would have preferred the new field to be 'Country', and not 'Type', as I feel that it would remove the ambiguous cases such as those mentioned above. There are also other benefits to this such as being able to separate Hong Kong and Taiwan manhua. This would increase functionality even further than the 'Type' field.

-Doujinshi are now listed under a separate field, which is great. However being able to search for manga or manwha doujinshi would be even greater, which is why I suggest that doujinshi not be in the same field as 'Type', or that it be a sub-field.

Thank you

Yeah...Interesting though may be right...since there a few entries that aren't really manga but that would also mean putting almost every country here wouldn't it? I say just add a "comics" type instead for the ones that don't fall on the manga/manhwa/manhua type...

Also, do we really need a doujinshi type when we already have it as a genre?

Well, doujinshi fits more as type, then as genre, no?

Hello again,

I am grateful for all of your replies, however please don't only comment on my suggestion regarding doujinshi, as my first point is also important I believe.

Also, please allow me to expand on my two points on a larger scale:

Genres such as Shounen, Shoujo, Yaoi, Hentai, Seinen, etc. relate to the target group of the particular publication the work is serialized in, whereas doujinshi means a self-published work which would not be serialized. This would seem to push towards the idea of including doujinshi under the 'Genre' field.
However, the fact the genre of a doujinshi (Shounen, Shoujo, etc) is almost always clearly distinguishable, makes one think that doujinshi would fit better under a 'Type' like category.
If this is done, and doujinshi was included under a revised 'Type' category, then one would also have to create a 'Serialized Works' category. Some may thing this is all too much hassle than is needed, but please look at the functionality possibilities:

Country:
Japan
Korean
Taiwan
Hong Kong
Malaysia
Other

Type:
Serialized Works
Doujinshi

Genre:
Shounen
Shoujo
etc. (current but w/o doujinshi)

If these three fields were made such as above, and searching enabled, then I would be able to search for Korean Shoujo Doujinshi, or Japanese Yaoi Serialized Works. This would greatly increase search capacities and functionality.

Please continue to reply with your comments

Thank-you

My original goal was to eventually remove doujin as a genre and phase it into the type field. Then, I would allow searching based on the type field.

Let me ask a few questions though,

What are doujin's called in china? korea? If we figured that out, and it was different, we could just add those as types as well, sort of how we have Manga separate from Manhwa and Manhua...

Secondly, most doujin's are not really published by any company, right?

so ... does it really matter what country the doujin is from? let me put it another way ... it's a fan based work any way you look at it... there are sometimes "doujinshi circles" which could be considered a publisher (in some ways), and for the doujin's which have the publisher field filled, we could also just infer the country from this information as well (since all publishers in the publishers section must have a country specified)

For officially released manga ... we could just infer the country from the publisher section of this site...

Of course, I'm not very knowledgeable about doujinshi ... so I might be completely off here..

My thoughts on the reply elvisrules just made:

On Country: This site doesn't aim to record information on serialized American comics such as Batman, just stuff that originates in east Asia... The only exception appears to be OEL, so rather than putting Other I would consider just putting OEL.

On everything: It would indeed be nice if the Original Publisher and Serialized in fields could be used to automatically determine whether it's shoujo/shounen and what country, whenever that's possible (and whenever it's not, just leave it up to the users as it is now). You could even set the Original Publisher field to "Self-published" which would then make the Serialized in field disappear. And whether its type is displayed as a manga or a manhwa or a self-published manga (doujin) or a self-published manhwa would be automatically determined as best as possible, but in cases where it can't be perfectly determined like that, it would be left up the users as it is now.

I'd also like to second what someone else mentioned, that light novel should definitely be a type if drama CD is.

Many people will be confused with the difference between novel and light novel. How would you say the difference is? If it's not good enough of a difference, we're not adding light novel.

I am well aware that Baka-Updates only focuses on comics in East Asia, I just forgot of the existance of the term OEL.
'OEL' would be better than 'Other', I agree.

I just realised there is also manga from China, such as the works of Benjamin.
Singaporean manhua also exists.
I really hope there will be a system by which to distinguish works from all these countries in the future.

I just sent a Request to Change before I saw this topic. ^^;

First, I want to say that I really like what you've done with the search, breaking it out into format types like doujin, manwha, manhua, OEL, etc. I would like to add a suggestion: I know all of Yaoi Press's works are translated from other languages, including English, but they don't publish Japanese yaoi manga, even though their works are called "manga" as well, and they don't just do English language manga, as I know they also publish from Italy and other parts of Europe. Would it be a good idea to change the "OEL" format type to "OEL or Global Language Manga"? Or would that overlap with manhwa and manhua? Would TokyoPop's Stars of Rising Manga and MegaTokyo qualify as OEL as well? I suppose this could be a slippery slope, however, since I don't know how many languages you want to accept as manga or manga-inspired comics.

When I search for a specific type of comic, manhwa for example, I encounter a problem.
If I click 'order by rating', I get a list of ALL comics, not only manhwa.
If I click of 'Rating', I get a list of OEL comics.

Does everyone else encounter this?
