A show like One Piece which doesn't allow characters to flesh themselves out at all only degrades the entire genre and keeps people thinking that anime is just a child's cartoon. :/

OP, while is the same main genre like Naruto for example it's quite another style. While people don't die in OP they can die in other shounen action manga.
Whatever happens in a manga doesn't degrades another one or all the manga in the same genre.
Maybe some people will make some false assumptions about the entire genre based on OP, but does that mean every shounen action manga should be exactly the same, so that nobody would think something falsely based on one manga in a genre about other manga in the same genre?

as many people have already stated, a lot of people do die in one piece, they are just faceless characters and seldom does the strawhat crew do the killing. It does happen though. I also agree that you don't need to have people die for a manga to be good or "not for kids". for example, name me one major character from Naruto (not that i think they should be compared, but that's what everyone is comparing) who has died, not side character, major actually appears more than once character. Mangka don't kill off main characters in that kind of adventure manga, everybody likes them too much. You want dying people, read something else, but don't tag manga with deep plotlines and characters as childish just because it's not a blood bath.

The only people who die, are the people in flashbacks... 'Till now, there hasn't been anyone who died in the present timeline..

Sometimes I just find that plain ridiculous.. >.> Because you were sure they were dead.. but suddenly *poof*.. They're still alive.. >.<

I like how that works. That way, you get the dramatic effect of a death, but then later you find out that the character survived after all, and everything's all happy. Plus, Oda doesn't reveal that the character survived until after the excitement is all over and the arc is winding down, so the dramatic effect of the death isn't killed by the revelation of the character's survival. This way, it's just a pleasant surprise as the arc winds down.

I know that this character really isn't a human but i still believe this counts as a death of a main character.

So despite four pages and many comments to the contrary bottom line is that no one dies and I think it certainly lessens the impact of One Piece as a major work. I'm sure that when it's all said and done (how long now Oda?) that there will be atleast one major villain death but for the most part..unlike Naruto where many pivotal heroic and evil characters have died One Piece just seems destined to be the sort of American comicbook style plot device where supporting characters can be unbelievably maimed (Nojiko, Genzo, the father from Enel storyline, alabasta citizens and don't even get me started on Franky's Family) and STILL survive for a song and dance at the end (not to mention the punishment the so-called human characters within Straw Hat crew takes --- how many times Zoro gets cut and or Sanji slammed headfirst into a wall) only to emerge for round two....while One Piece is not a masterpiece like Naruto (how can it be?? it has no consequences) it does very much entertain and is really downright funny.

But much like my comments on Naruto it's funny to me that no one actually can just admit that no--no one dies in One Piece..instead we get ridiculous comparisons for several non-characters like Gold Roger or Zoro's sparring partner as a child or Belle Mere...no I would think common sense would dictate I mean characters in the here and now and characters who have motiviation in the main storyline today.

I've been avoiding this topic for a long time while i read through to the latest chapters, so umm.. heres my say ;P

While I agree that a manga doesn't need death to be good, I feel the mangka has ruined a lot of moments by bringing characters 'back to life'. The first example that comes to mind is when Pell sacrifices himself to save alabaster, I was in tears when that happened and thought it was a great dramatic choice by the mangaka, but then he showed that pell survived, which partly ruins/dampens what happened.

I can think of quite a few side characters that died for sure in the current time line, but they don't really matter. I'm not screaming for Oda to kill off characters, I just wish he wouldn't render actions meaningless by making it so there isn't any consequence.

Didn't use spoiler tags as the example has already been posted xD

Ode said that typically the only people that die are in flashbacks. And while some of the minor characters may die in the current storyline (what happened to the other crew when Kuma attacks).

I don't watch one piece to see characters die. If I wanted that I'll read/watch Gantz, Berserk and possibly Claymore. I read/watch one piece for a great story with lots of laughs.

For naruto, its turned into a low level DBZ show. No one reads naruto for the story, cool moves, laughs, fights... the only reason I'm still reading it is to see how it ends and once it does I'm never going back to it. Heck a semi main character died and it will probably take that characters death to get Naruto to the level he should have been several years ago.

and BTW death in Naruto is pretty meaningless too. If a main enough character dies, they'll sacrafice a lower character so that the main one will live. Like when Gaara died but was brought back.

You can't compare Naruto and One Piece they are way too different. One piece focuses way more on frendship dreams and morality while naruto focuses on revenge secrets and power ups like the super sayain 1, 2 ,3 ,4 era. I'm not knocking Naruto but Oda puts alot of effort and time into each and everyone of his original characterss that appear. luffy with his straw hat...i mean luffy looks cool with it...but i've never seen a cool straw heat like that in my life...Franky looks cool period...but if i ever saw a guy in real life with a tripple chin i'ld say wtf. Oda makes the wierd work because he puts so much of his spirit into each of his characters so you can sort of see why he wouldn't just kill them off. The focus isn't anywhere close to death but more on Oda's wacky world and his crazy creations that some how mesh together so well even tho they are so different. And granted there are some adult things such as luffy and the stabbing of the eye...and the chef eating his leg...still grosses me out lol. And a few side notes about naruto...if a character does die...they imidiatly either have some one replace him or forget his role as if he was never there. And plz if your honestly going to compare naruto to one piece the number one thing that comes to mind is that i've never seen a one piece filler that sucks...if anyone has ever enjoyed a naruto filler..and is still alive.....u deserve praise.... on top of that i'ld just like to say that naruto is very obvios in it's plots and it's not really original...Naruto is exactlly like goku exept he starts off with yellow hair and has a down graded hadoken from ryu. Only thing thats different is the drawing style...and goku and vegeta were alot more vulgar at times...times lol

One piece original work of art

Naruto Dbz/Street Fighter...i want my wasted time back

I'm not even going to put effort this time to make you clear that Naruto does not suck, and is actually better than One Piece. Though One Piece has its great aspects too.

See~, I'm not bashing like you did. Now you try. smile wink grin
