@uberzombie: when talking about realistic, people don't mean that the situation is realistic, but that the way people react to the given situation is realistic. Let me give an example with naruto: Say, Akatsuki decides not to take any risks anymore and gangs up on Naruto. Naruto confronts them, and wins the battle by destroying all of them with his rasengan. The people who called gantz realistic, would call this unrealistic because Naruto would never be powerful enough to do this and the akatsuki members would spread so that at least some of them wouldn't be hurt. You however, would call this unrealistic only because a real person wouldn't be able to use a jutsu in the first place. See the difference? In a work of fiction, you always need to accept some things as real. Of course no one can build a cloning machine, but that's not the point. I find the words Q.E.D. at the end a bit ironic, because no one asked to proove that.

And then about the plot following a basic formula. It is true that the plot of gantz is rather simple, but that's also because the concept doesn't allow many different realistic options. In a mission, you either kill or get killed. If you don't want your points to be reset and be stuck forever, there is no in between. If you live and kill, you will of course interact with the other hunters (and the aliens you hunt, of course). In this situation you can either ignore them completely (e.g. when they die quickly or do their best not to get close to you like nishi) or have a relationship with them ranging from hostility to love. That leaves plenty of material to make a story imo. But the story isn't the strength of this manga. It's all about the action, gore, sex and the tiny bit of drama. That's why every situation will lead to one or more of these four. Predictable? Yes, but that's what we're all waiting for. No one cares (much) about what happens in between the missions (unless there are fights).

Nice way to sum it up.
Action, gore, sex, drama, and most of all... waiting to know what is going to happen next.

ginenbijnoam explained it all nicely. you always have to accept the universe in witch the story takes place before discussing it in any way

you're first bit is a response to my poor attempt at humor, so I'll leave that alone. But what i said in my second post was my actual position on this and i will say this again, Realistically , a 40 year old man who works in the service industry is NOT going to attempt to take on a 6 story tall ferocious dinosaur who he has recently encountered after dying, and then appearing in a room with other people he has never met and then suddenly appearing somewhere else, possibly equipped in a strange Cosplay suit he was encouraged to wear, or a seemingly toy gun. No in fact the only realistic reaction to that is to either run far far away, or stand still and lose control of bodily functions in the instance that he is having a nervous breakdown. And as for you're Naruto example, its unrealistic because Naruto wouldn't have enough time to create a Rasengan 6 times over(Rasengan is a single target jutsu generally speaking. biggrin ) And also, you say yourself it doesn't have a strong story, but you say that doesn't matter because it has violence. Koroshiya Ichi had both, Vagabond (less violence but an amazing story) Berserk. Violence and gore doesn't redeem a weak plot-line, it just gives you something to take your mind off it for a bit i guess.
(I forgot to mention a primary difference and flaw in your analogy to naruto. Gantz's setting is placed in Japan to try and give a standard for realism or some such thing, whereas Naruto does no such thing. but w/e although i disagree with you, I understand where you are coming from.)

Hmmm, I'm not sure why people insist on applying "real world" ideas to a fantasy world. Of COURSE it's not realistic! It's completely made up!

On another note, I personally think I'm going to take the advice from someone higher up and let more chapters pile up before I start reading again. I just find it more enjoyable to read multiple chapters at a time. Especially for this manga.

@ChronicD thats what i'm saying, it's not realistic. and also that's a good idea, I'm probably going to do the same. So far part 2 has really not interested me as much. sad
maybe if i take in a bunch at once it will be better.

about reallistic. its something that could happen

as for kurono fighting the monster:
they are put in that situation, if they dont fight they will dye anyway cause they will be stuck in gantz forever.
for the 40 eyer old man, anyone can see it their way, but for me the manga has justified very well the reason for him helping kurono. you cant just think of "40eyer old fighting monster" you have to think of all that happened to him and to the dialoges he had in the story with kurono, it all made me think that kind of person would try to fight.

what i mean is that by the way the character was shown, described, personaçity, whatever, fighting the monster would be what someno like that would do.

I get kind of sad from reading this series becuase when anyone dies there just making a clone and not reviving them and the original person is dead forever.

Uggg..

Old man listened to Kurono in the first place because kurono reminded him of his grandson. He knew the suit was extra powerful because Kurono showed him how to use it. Oku also gives us the impression that Old man is not just another old guy, because old people usually die. He was smart because he chose to follow Kurono, and he knew an expert when he saw one.

As for the series currently. Is anybody reading it? It's been frickin awesome. Sure the first chapters have been kind of slow, but just get over the fact that Kurono is dead. It's Katou's turn to get a change of character. Just as Kurono turned from an asshole to a badass Gantz leader, I am sure that Oku will transform Katou from a failed niceguy leader into a more killer intented Gantzer who can lead. Plus Host Samurai is the most badass character in the manga. (Read latest chapter.)

As for realism, Gantz has a better realistic quality than any shonen ever created.

The first 240 chapters could have just been an arc where Kurono was the main central character, and now Kato takes his place until the next revival. Or maybe I have no clue what I'm talking about, since the author has already proven he can do whatever he wants within the story.

its like *deus ex machina confused

i stopped reading this manga for two months and it only passes by 5 chapter. what a bummer. it hard to wait for 1 chapter after another, but to wait for soooo looong for so little, fuh. gantz is a great manga coz it shows how something can affect ones principle(except for katou coz he refuses to kill). take a look at kei, he's been through so many battle that he became the leader coz he knows how and what to know. he'll be revived soon , katou won't let him stay dead. i know that kind of guy.

i think the author make gantz as his avatar or something. ya know, everything decided by him, how the story goes is up to him.
