What do you think of it?
Personally, it pissed the hell out of me. I was expecting them to stay together till the end.
She could have still supported him by staying or she could have come back for him after a year or something -_- If she did that then there would be no need for crying in the end >.< RAWR!!!!

Really needed to get that out of my system. dead

*Spolier warning*

I didn't expect the ending to be like that but it was a given that it was going to turn out like it.. people wouldn't want to see the guy die from lack of food. I can't stand it messed up the series for me, he went from being in love and having sex with Haruka to acknowledging the fact that she's his mother. I didn't like the fact that she just went off with some random guy and broke off all contact with Shintarou for 6 years and not even checking to see if he didn't die in his house..Oh well f**k it, it was a good series, don't know bout' the ending though.

well done with my rant, always feels better to talk/complaining about the ending after you done with a series eyes

I liked the ending though.
I honestly thought he was that bum who ate in that restaurant but wasnt expecting that he's actually the owner of the restaurant!

I liked how he sees her as a 'mother' in the ending, the whole point of the story is to make him as an independent young man who is self-sufficient and Oku Hiroya managed to give a very 'accomplished' ending for this manga. That was what his late father always wanted, and she did a great job!

I have to admit though, it's too bad that he turned out to be so OLD in the ending.. I always wanted him to show more of his pretty face!

The "mother" thing really broke my heart. I mean, she cried at the end obviously because she still loved him. If we're talking about him becoming independant, I believe the author could have gone about it another way rather than him falling in love with her and finally making love to her.

i finished it idk remember when but when i read the ending...it was bittersweet for me...cuz i wanted him and her to be together cuz she still likes him and stuff. i was reallly pissed, like wtf when she jus suddenly left him, im like wtf is tht...i almost stopped readin it but i had to finish thinkin maybe she would come bak or he will somehow find her. and when i finnally saw her at the end with the dog, i was like she will go bak wit him but its totally different, i was like wtf but i understood the mangaka had to make him be independent but it still sucked how it ended in my opinion...also why make her cry, no why even make her come bak after so many years for 2 minutes. it sucked but still a good manga biggrin

Well, in my opinion..she left him for his own good. He cant just be depending his life on someoneelse at this point even if she loves him. I think she loves him deeply but at the same time, she is aware of her responsibilities as his stepmother.

And if Hiroya sensei intend to prolonged the series into the point where the main guy could possibly look for her would make the plot more draggish.

I agree with that though, It makes me confused why they ended up having sex and how they see their relationships. confused As a couple? or as a mother & son?

I think she knows that he's a bit confused with his own feelings since he never really had an attachment with someoneelse before. (which is why in the ending, he sees her as a "mother" rather than a "lover".

huh. prolly! bigrazz

I think I understood this story until the end. She loved him as a son and was even willing to sleep with him to help him overcome his problems (isolating himself from the world). It's a weird story and the character's motives are not always clear but I enjoyed it. I even felt sad when reading the end. However, I'm glad it had a happy ending. biggrin

He now lives a normal life instead of being the next chris-chan.
And she gets to live a normal life too instead of taking care of him.

No, that's what you call a "Normal Ending".
Romantically speaking, there wasn't really a happy ending.

This is someone whom understand the story. I think most reader dont get it cause of cultural difference i.e. how Japanese view family values and their roles

From start to end Haruka never see him as lover but was trying to take over his dad role to help him. The social worker attempt fail because Shintaro already have someone to be trusted, the role has been filled. In this case the role is seeing Haruka as a romantic interest. She discuss this with Haruka and also warn her about the time constraint and Haruka herself also need to move on.

What Haruka did then was way out of her own sacrifices and love/respect towards her dead husband and Shintaro. She turn down her ex boyfriend from high school, ignore her mom's protest, ignore her possible future career, pretend as Shintaro's girlfriend and even willing to satisfy his desire. She apologize to her dead husband for using her body.

When she left Shintaro is confused and force to face reality. He was starved, given hash treatment from the prostitute i.e. sex/women doesn't necessary give fulfillment. His favorite manga/games/internet doesn't quite work anymore. Only when he found his dad's diary he finally did understand what both his dad and Haruka has been doing. He then force himself to come out from recluse, get a job albeit some blunder at first. Then after some years later when Shintaro meet Haruka again he cry himself out of gratitude saying 'thank you mom' to her, which is to tell us reader he finally understood, overcame his hikakimori and is now leading a happy life.

This is a story with very good ending and also dealing with some taboo subjects tactfully. Beats me why so many readers want them to be together or view the ending as bad

Agreed.
If they ended together I'd be really pissed. I mean, we have to understand that this manga is about JAPANESE family relationships - maybe in an extreme point of view, but anyway, it's different from where I live.
This is NOT a love story.
If you want a love story, just read other manga...

And in my opnion - although I was expecting a love ending - it was awesome. The guy learned how to live, and the woman did her job as a mother. The end coudn't be happier.
