I like both American and Japanese comics. I like them because I honestly hate reading but I love stories, and so this is a compromise for me.

Cause the art style is unique, it's addicting, there's nothing like it, and it's just so damn awesome.

Easier to take in the story than a "straight text" book & thus faster to read while still reading about a detailed "world" because you see the details rather than reading descriptions. This is a big plus for me because these days I very rarely have 2-3 hours to sit & read a book, and yet I don't like stopping in the middle (and somehow for me it feels less disruptive to, for example, pause after reading one volume of a ten volume manga series, than it does to pause after reading one chapter of a ten chapter book...).
Different kinds of stories than are told by English-speaking authors in any form of book/comic/whatever, plus all the cultural differences provide something new & different. Stories that just wouldn't work well as "straight text" can be told very well in manga; in addition to verbal jokes etc. there can also be sight gags that would be killed by describing them in a "straight text" book. (Ranma 1/2 comes to mind...)

I completely agree.

Well, he's probably only referring to the US.
He forgot that this is an international forum.

Because American comics are targeted mainly for a male audience.
What are the girls suppose to read?
What are the girls suppose to read?
Please come back when you've actually done some research on that.

yea i agree, the mangas nowadays, aim towards everyone, just remember the 6 Gs , can aim towards guys, gals, grunts, gays, grownups, and ummmm guys, lol, dodgeball joke...
but seriously, it does choose larger range of readers, kinda like "love hina", "chobits", and other romance/harem mixed with a big douse of eyecandy...
though im a big fan of marvel... the only reason i dont read the marvel comics... umm for start off, i dont even know exactly how many issues are released for umm lets say for just spiderman... they have like different versions or alternative dimensions and stories, like 1 version of spiderman was bit by a radioactive spider, and another was bit by a new species,,, and 1 version says he can naturally shoot webs and another he has to make his own web by using chemicals... and they have WAAAAAAY TOO MANY CHARACTERS, for starters there are more side/small/minor characters in like spiderman or x-men than naruto, bleach, and one piece combined.... SO BASICALLY I LIKE SIMPLE AND SHORT, though i do wish naruto, bleach, and one piece never ends, lol, especially berserk "long live MIURA ", damn mangas been around for over 20 years now, hope he doesnt die from some stroke or something from exerting himself....

My favorite thing about manga is that their is always something great to read based on how I feel at that moment. semi-horny=ecchi, happy=comedy, angry=horror, normal=shounen. This wide berth of genres is great because it keeps me interested and offers some great things to do for fun.

i think becouse usually theres nothing good running on tv, people find out about animes, later they get to know about mangas, after some hesitation people beginn to read something and notice that this isn't bad and it becomes something like a drug to them
