I like shoujo, but I hate when it is too cliche and when the heroines keep crying like in every single page! dead

i ONLY read shoujo (that's linked with romance and maybe a bit of josei, light smut) i guess when it comes to manga i'm pretty close minded because i cannot read shounen or mangas where there are a lot of action. i can only watch action. for me reading it isn't that interesting. the only exception to this is...death note...but idk if that's even shounen.(is it?)....
For movies though i am not close minded and watch pretty much everything. so yeah although shoujo has lots of cliches, and sometimes it's hard to find good ones, once i do find them it's just me, my comp and my shoujo = <3 biggrin

I probably couldn't say " I hate shoujo!" with any smidgeon of honesty. ' Cause I don't. A majority of what I buy happens to be shoujo, though they're mostly from old school artists that have been around since the early '90s.

Now if there was a poll for " Do you hate stuff that runs in Cheese!" that'd be a different story. mad

i hate it so much that the first thing that i do when read or hear of a new manga anime is check if its Shoujo or not.

Shoujo= bunch of love stricken girls falling over themselves over men that look like girls lol

I'd like to say I don't like it, because much of it is cliche and full of annoying, OMG-this-guy-is-so-hot-I'm-totally-in-LOVE-even-though-I' ve-barely-spoken-to-him, girls as the main characters, and Yes-I-AM-awesome-bow-down-before-me, guys as the primary love interest. (That or else both main characters are perfect and have no flaws, which is even more annoying).

But pretty much everything I read is shoujo. Everything.

I guess it just becomes addicting after a while. And shoujo manga does have a lot of strong points: I mean, usually, the artwork is pretty great, for one thing. I also find shoujo to generally be funnier than, say, shonen, and there are also virtually no boring fight scenes that drag on for chapters and chapters in shoujo manga. Plus, in shoujo, it's rare that they kill of my favorite characters (which they do ALL THE TIME in the few shonen manga I'm into).

So, yeah, I'm a fan of Shoujo manga. It annoys me from time to time, and there's a lot of cons to go with the pros. But all in all, shoujo = biggrin

I, on the other hand, find a lot of shoujo (esp. romance shoujo) have bad art, content aside. I am not a huge fan of shounen either. I tend to avoid typical ones and those with bad art. Shounen also have poorly drawn ones. But it's easier to find better art in shounen than shoujo. I am close to done with romance shoujo. Non-romance shoujo are fine though.

Again, I don't really mind a weak heroine. That's NOT the problem with shoujo. A lot of shoujo with supposedly "strong" heroines are even more boring or poorly written.

Not that much, but I hate shoujo that features women who are weak willed or weak in majority and highly submissive to men in something explict (i.e. Shojo Smut).

Wow. This thread really shows that translation companies and we scanlators ourselves are falling down on the job. We've failed to find good titles to translate and we've failed to educate our audiences about the full range of manga that exists in Japan.

"Shoujo" magazines are ones that are intended for girls. There is no special connection between shoujo and sickly-sweet school romance.

The shoujo series that I'm reading right now in Japanese is Please, Jeeves, an adaptation of the Jeeves and Wooster stories by P.G. Wodehouse. As anyone who's read the original knows, the main character spends most of his time trying thwart his terrifying aunt's attempts to marry him off--usually with hilarious and embarrassing results. The manga adaptation features realistic-ish art, lots of period detail, and no hearts, flowers, or positive portrayals of romance.

Even if we ignore the many amazing shoujo series of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, there are still plenty of interesting series that have nothing to do with romance, nothing to do with high school, and nothing to do with angsty-wangsty whiny weak-willed women.

The fact that people here have had such negative experiences with shoujo just indicates that no one has translated any of the good stuff. What's up with that, scanlators? Why aren't you (we, really) choosing a more diverse range of titles? Why are the only shoujo series with descriptions and reviews on mangaupdates the derivative school romance ones? Why are we letting people mis-identify all the good shoujo as josei? (I love josei too, but seriously, mature shoujo is still shoujo if it ran in a shoujo magazine!)

People have mentioned some good titles here, but many of them are just more skilled versions of the really bad stuff. If my friend says he doesn't like cliched schoolgirl romance, I'm not going to hand him un-cliched schoolgirl romance to convince him to read shoujo: I'm going to find him a nice sci-fi series, or one about sports, or a spy thriller.

There's more out there, shoujo haters. I swear it's not all hearts and flowers.

Yeah, they should use their resources to keep translating Himitsu instead, or do Shinri Sousakan Aoi.

I kind of hate it and kind of don't depends on the story and art like i accually like platinum garden and tale of the moon and boys over flowers the female character has a little backbone in boys over flowers but other than those i mostly stay away from shoujo as for anime give me action anyday i could care less about an anime thats solely about romance eyes
