I think what zeidrich meant was that he never reads shoujo because he's a guy. And because he never reads that genre, he has no reasons to hate it.

On-topic: I always begin to hate shoujo when I have read too much of it, then I take a break by reading seinen or josei. And then when I go back to shoujo, I don't hate it as much. smile

No, I do not hate shoujo, although there have only been a select few titles I have enjoyed thus far. Having to wade through the mass of shoujo clichés churned out over and over again is a lil bit of a chore. My pick would also be seinen over any other demographic - I find it offers far more diversity whereas the majority of shoujo mangakas tend to limit themselves to (idealistic) romance. (But that sense of escapism is precisely why I even bother to pick up the shoujo titles…)

Ok thank you hman69 and milque. I didn't think this could be the reason since I read and enjoy very much some shounen and seinen and find it perfectly normal laugh

Back in topic, I don't hate shoujo at all. On the contrary I think in the late years quality of the works has improved in terms of originality and narration smile

I don't hate it unless it's too long. I love short ones more than those cliched shounen.

hmm i honestly dont know but i guess i do since i didnt enjoy reading most of the top rated shoujos everyone loves, like:
-fruits basket
-vampire knight
-nana
-special a
-school rumble
-hana kimi
etc etc
most of the highly rated shoujos on my list are rated 1

but ofcourse there are some that i did enjoy but those are the really-deep-hard-to-find ones like
flowers of evil, kare kano, basara and please save my earth

to be honest im more into stuff like deathnote ,liar game, bitter virgin and mirai nikki...most of those are seinen

so yeah im not too keen on shoujo

I have severe issues with the passive useless ineffectual protagonists, with no ambition (other than marry, when even that) that plagues the genre. I also have issues with the over idealized romances specially if the male lead is extremely pushy about starting and maintaining the romance (the worse cases of this make the character seems a border line rapist, or worse), which is also kinda prevalent. Value dissonance probably plays a big part in my dislike of those, but anyway. Also, the shallowness previous poster have complained about is also an issue. If I'm going to read something for the emotions, the characters and the development of the cast relationships I want it to be well written and deep. I want the characters to look and feel human.

There are shoujos where this does not happen, or happen in a lesser degree, and I do like those. I like a lot of CLAMP titles, Sailor Moon is actually pretty nice, Kamisama Hajimemashita is (or at least was, haven't read it in a relatively long time) pretty good, I really liked Fruit's Basket, and quite a few more. That said, most Shoujo that I find seems to be heavy on the issues I listed before, and I have no patience to keep searching through the trash till I find the goods ones, so nowadays, unless it's very well recommended, if it's listed as a Shoujo, it's already a point against it. The mangas I read these days that are intended to the female public are generally Josei, as I find much easier to find good writing there than in the average Shoujo.

That all said, most of my reading is Seinens and Shounens.

I don't hate Shoujo Manga. I like it. Even though it isn't my first genre.

I love shojo. Some of my favorite series are shojo. (The first three are all time favorites. The last one... well, if she keeps on being tough then it might become a top favorite of mine.)

Vampire Knight which is my favorite shojo of all time. I can pick up any vk that I've read a thousand times and read it like it's the first time. It's a very special manga to me.
Angel Sanctuary or anything by Kaori Yuki, really. The dark themes and violence of her work excite me, even though I'm not guro fan or anything. laugh
Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden action, adventure, and just a little romance, so that when it does come it knocks you off your feet! Even a guy could love this series. (I do.)
Sakura Hime Kaden which, even though its uber girlie (I don't know how I stand it) it still has a strong heroine that you actually want to root for.

Anyway, my point is, there are many shojo series I really love/enjoy, and because of them I don't hate the whole genre. biggrin

Depends if it's a good shojo or not. But I do like it though now yaoi outmatches it easily.
