Though it's written to be a read by a younger audience, try The Giver, Gathering Blue, and The Messenger by Lois Lowry (you need to read them in that order). Great ideas and concepts.

I also really like Animal Farm and Oliver Twist, but you probably already heard of them.

I KNOW you've heard of Shakespeare, but I just want to point out his gem known as A Midsummer's Night Dream. I love his comedies. smile

And finally, if you enjoy reading books designed for those five and under (which I do), go for the Frog and Toad series and anything by Dr. Seuss (particularly the Butter Battle Book, The Sneetches and Other Stories, and There's a Wocket in My Pocket). ;D

For satire - The Good Soldier Svejk by Jaroslav Hašek.
For horror (ish) - Blindness by José Saramago.

I read it a few years ago, but people who like SF (and anti-heroes as protagonists) will probably like The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester. Summary from Amazon:

"When it comes to pop culture, Alfred Bester (1913-1987) is something of an unsung hero. He wrote radio scripts, screenplays, and comic books (in which capacity he created the original Green Lantern Oath). But Bester is best known for his science-fiction novels, and The Stars My Destination may be his finest creation. First published in 1956 (as Tiger! Tiger!), the novel revolves around a hero named Gulliver Foyle, who teleports himself out of a tight spot and creates a great deal of consternation in the process. With its sly potshotting at corporate skullduggery, The Stars My Destination seems utterly contemporary, and has maintained its status as an underground classic for forty years."

Maybe Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey or Mansfield Park? I love Austen's critic humour! You've probably read them both, but, well, it's a try.

Kirkland Revels is interesting as well. But it's quite old and not popular, so I don't know if you'll be lucky on getting it.

I second the Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks and recommend Trickster's Choice and Trickster's Queen, both by Tamora Pierce a little bit of romance but definitely not the main focus.
The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan is a really good horror. And i also recommend The Summoning and the Awakening by Kelly Armstrong (the awakening more horror-ish than the summoning)
