I started to read it knowing that I read manga in 2001.
I had read it before, but I didn't really think it was any
different from comics. Probably around -99.

Started in 2006? I voted for that, but maybe 2005. Do not remember. It wasn't a huge thing for me until mid 2007, after coming across this, and several other sites.

Voted for 1-2 years cause that's when I actually started to read scanlations on a regular basis.

Though I read a scanlation by accident in 2004 during my webcomic phase. I didn't really feel a need for scanlations. Also in 2004 I was checking out 5-15 volumes of manga and anime a week. The library had an awesome selection. It wasn't till I moved to a place with a bad library did I find the stuff online to continue an addiction. I obsessively watched anime from 2005 - 2006. And then discovered I could find manga online, and it took up a lot less space than anime. I've been obsessively been reading manga for 2 years.

I've been reading scanlations for about 2-3 years now, started in October of 2007; I don't know what my first scanlation I've read is, my memory's a bit fuzzy.

I've been reading scanlations since I was in middle school...So I'd say maybe 6ish years. But there were hardly any scanlations available so I read many series with text translations and bought the manga so I could follow along. I did this for Kaitou Jeanne, Chobits, Time Stranger Kyoko, Hana Kimi and a few others.

for scanslations I read, it would have to be love hina(first scanlation I read... pretty sure) and DNA^2 (my first finished scanlated manga)

Around 1999ish. Before that, we'd import directly and read text translations. As in, hold up the dot matrix (or inkjet if you were lucky) printout next to the page of a physical book, and hope you're looking at the right bubble.
