a bunch of ppl go to the beach & through some turn of events (i.e. falling asleep on a boat) end up on a so called "deserted island" that just happens to be in like 5 min walking distance from their point of origin, but they don't realize this until the other members of the group come for them

That reminds me of another standard cliche, the courage challenge. Haunted cave+candle+boy/girl partner+sappy tragic love story+getting to the end ='s love. I've seen it so often that I'm tempted to wonder if any school actually does it.

....shoujo will always be shoujo......meaning......forever love triangles. Isn't there something other interesting than that?.....THERE HAS GOT TO BE!!!!!! I am trying to think of a shoujo manga iwthout a love triangle......I CAN'T!

The shoujo manga that don't have love triangles are a) shoujo manga with no romance/love b) shoujo manga that's short enough that the mangaka doesn't require the female or male to interact with other male or female characters. i.e. girl/guy: "I like you." guy/girl replies: "I like you too." The End. ;) But there are probably manga that are longer than that (as in longer than a page or a oneshot) but I can't think of it off the top of my head.

But including oneshots, I read a manga called Count the Sheep Everywhere, if I recall correctly (it's not currently in the database or recorded differently), and it's just about this guy and this girl that are friends and so he asks her out on a date and she goes "What's the point? We'd just hang out and play video games just like friends like we always do". There are no complications with the love triangle coming into play. I think Watase Yuu even has this in her oneshots, as in 40-pages not 1 volume of manga.

That sounds exactly like Card Captor Sakura, although I don't know if that part was in the manga (I know it's in the anime). I think it was in Marmalade Boy too but I don't remember it playing out how you mentioned it.

There should be a shoujo where EVERYONE DIES!!!!111ONE~ *laughs evilly*

Jk, jk, jk...but it would be an interesting twist, wouldn't it? smile wink grin
Recently I've found myself attracted to sad endings since it seems like all happy endings are the same now, or at least very similar, and I'm just getting very bored with it. Anybody know of a really, really sad, almost depressing shoujo? confused That's what I wanna read smile

But hopefully something that won't scar me for life \^o^/

Then would it still be a shoujo??
dead

I wouldn't want to read a depressing shoujo! But really, there's got to be something along the lines of Romeo and Juliet, where both lovers die.
Probably there is something in the "Most Depressing Manga" thread?

It doesn't even have to be shoujo, just something with a little romance to make it all the more dramatic and depressing smile
I'm wondering if they really will both die in the RxJ anime...It will be so very sad if they do cry

I'll check out that thread again \^o^/ I was looking at it before, but I think that there were just too many genres...or something like that ^_^'''

You know what I hate...

1) The girl is a nerdy, geeky, glasses wearing girl and she meets a hot guy who suddenly makes her want to change. She gets a make-over, stop wearing her glasses, gets contacts, become more sexy, and fall for the guy. Yay.

2) The girl is a carefree, smiley little dork that hates to see her friends get hurt, and screams a lot. (Yeah, Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi, I'm talking to you!)

3) I hate those girls who say they want to fight but when it's time to duke it out they can't fight to save a ant's life. Worthless pieces of sh*t.

4) I'm tired of the bad-guy-who-everyone-is-afraid-of-but-actually-have-a-soft-side-to- them. Borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrringgggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!! Why can't they just be the ultimate bad guy with no good side to them? And be a pschopath!

I'm sure there's more cliches that I hate but this is all for now! bigrazz

Maybe try Kagen no Tsuki? Its a little bit sad, different from the usual chipper shoujo flavor.

I also hate the main heroine getting cornered by the love interest's fan club. -__-

Yeah, girls do that, but can you not include it? it's over-used so much that it shouldn't even be an idea anymore.
mad no biggrin

I think the whole fan-club idea in general is pushing it. I mean, does anyone actually do that?

My favorite cliche is when the girl falls down/drops pencils/stacks of paper/gets knocked over on the train and falls madly in love with the oh-so-conveniently located bishie who helps her out.

Ooooh worst cliche? lol there's a whole page dedicated to shoujo cliches:
http://niko-niko.net/shoujo/common-shoujo-manga-plot-devices/

Anyway, I think the one that's most common and most annoying now, is the one where they trip or he pushes her out of the way of danger or something but SOMEHOW, the guy ends up on top of the girl (accidental kiss is optional) and there is an awkward moment where they turn beet red!

hmm... how about, main girl character always plays damsel in distress? the cute, kinda dumb, not the prettiest but all the guys seem to like her anyway type of girl... yeappp

but it's not so bad =]

Agree!!!
I detest characters that don't have high self esteem! Sometimes it's cute playing damsel in distress, but it gets annoying if it's done rather often. I'm reading Gokusen and that's what I like about the main female character. She's strong and doesn't have does moments of weakness like acting dumb and stuff like that. It's sooo stereotypical!

I don't like that they are somewhat simple-minded and every time there's a little argument with the main male character, the female char. goes like "he hates me now". I'm sorry but hate is a strong word. They shouldn't just throw it around like that, why can't they be more confident.

Edit by mod: Again... do not double post

Hmm... most of the scenes you guys mentioned are quite cliche but I don't really hate them, just take it as part of what makes it shoujo. If you were talking about the worst kind of cliche, it would be when the ugly girl gets the guy. Now THAT'S what I call completely unrealistic, but you get that kinda plot all the time. Come on, what are they trying to do, make us girls feel relieved that we aren't perfect but can still land a guy who appears perfect? Puh-leeze. But then again, it doesn't really annoy me, since I'm used to it already (read too many shoujo manga to get irritated ^^")

I do find that manga where the girl gets raped and now she's like a complete weakling etc really gets on my nerve (Hitomi Genki Kingdom/Kiss in the Blue). I don't care how realistic it is, but putting some girl who just sits there and cry 24/7 is more than I can take (so far I think those are the type that I absolutely will not finish). Oh, and teacher-student love stories are just disturbing. I don't know why, but they are. I guess it's the maturity issue...

I agree with the student - teacher relationship. Maybe if the ages aren't sooo far apart and maybe if the student is already 18 and the teacher is like 21 lol, you know, not so far apart...but then if they both are in the same environment, now that's just not fair and not appropriate either.

Alright, maybe this isnt a cliche that can be counted but it is something that I dislike due to my preference in long hair. But I hate how in almost every time, main girl's first change she makes is bam, boy hair. Forget the long hair, make it butch. Its the one thing I cant stand. Best example in this case for me is Skip Beat, prior to the boyification, Kyoko actually was a cute character, now with the shortness, not so much.

I hardly ever read Shoujo, because most of it is about one thing and one thing only. Looooove. The art is weak. The stories are predictable. A typical story goes something like....

Girl A's parents died in car crash, so she has to support herself with part time jobs while going to school. She really likes rich boy, but snobby girls make her life a living hell. However, we know that rich boy will see her goodness despite the fact that she 1. trips down the stairs forcing him to catch her, 2. catches a fever from being out in the rain without an umbrella forcing him to bring her medicine, 3. is the subject of malicious rumors started by snobby girls.

Basically, they are all a retelling of Cinderella.

Lots of stuff that people are describing that involves harems and nosebleeds----that occurs in shonen manga.

It's very sad, but in a sweet, melancholic way. I enjoyed the story, but I did cry. T_T
