Oooh this one is tough to decide on. They're all prodigy brains but I think Shikamaru or L would be the most likely to win. Just a guess

Lelouch would probably win at western (or normal) chess, while Shikamaru would most likely win at Shogi or Japanese chess.
I don't really believe it matters how much of a genius you are if you aren't familiar with the integracies of playing the game. I know I remember seeing the two I mentioned playing (a version of) chess in their respectable anime; I don't remember seeing L, Conan, or Ishida ever play chess though.
If they were all familiar with the game though, and assuming they all possess about the same intellect, it would all come down to how much free time they have to invest in studying the game.
First off, Conan would probably be at an obvious disadvantage because of the age gap -- and thus lack of prior studying hours in comparison with the others. I also have a feeling that Shikamaru and Ishida wouldn't have enough free time to devote to studying chess, due to their 'work', to truly reach their potential at it. Apparently though, according to the anime, Shikarmaru does somehow find time..? As for L...

Spoiler (highlight to view)
L is probably too busy trying to get his affairs in order for his impeding fate to devote much thought to chess.
This just leaves Lelouch who possesses the stubbornness, drive, and determination to excel at whatever he puts his mind to. He also previously expressed an interest in the game, so he is the one I believe would win against the others. Like Shikarmaru and Ishida though, 'work' may possibly get in the way...Last edited by vanpaia at 8:57 pm, Jan 20 2009

yeah which is why he's winning. Unless we aren't suppose to count their ability then I'd say Shikamaru.
I'm voting for Ishida though, so sad he has no votes... I'd say he's actually the smartest of the bunch I mean he already has the glasses...jk
Edit: damn I voted for Shikamaru by mistake.

Shouldn't that be the other way around? o_O
Especially since it's chess...

nah. he has Geass. remember?
Lol... We're basing this on just their intellect and their familiarity with the game; not on their supernatural powers. ;; Lelouch would most probably win, since he's very familiar with playing chess. This has nothing to do with intellect whatsoever.

I might be biased but Lelouch of course! He would win without even needing to use his geass I'm betting. He used to beat Clovis who was 6 years his senior when he was younger than 9. Plus he would frequently win against nobles very familiar with the game when the game wasn't in his favour and he did so in a short amount of time. He beat a chess champion at least once as well remember. They might all be highly intelligent but Chess is a strategical game and in strategy Lelouch wins hands down.
Experience doesn't exactly hurt either. I only know western chess personally and as I grew older I learnt more rules and how to be flexible in my strategy, always thinking several moves ahead until I became a high school champion and ten I gave up to pursue science instead, lol. It's a complicated game. Luckily my dad and sister were both chess champions in high school so I had good opponents. Lelouch has the strategical thinking, intelligence and experience. I'd imagine that since he lived in Japan he would have learnt shogi and it's clear he's an expert in western chess. Shikamaru is good at shogi but he would not have had the chance to learn western chess and I doubt he could be bothered either.
