As a child, he grew up watching Tensai Bakabon and Tiger Mask.

After graduating from Hongou Senior High School, he enrolled in KOIKE Kazuo’s Gekiga Sonjuku 3rd term along with ISHIWATA Shuichi, TOGASHI Yasutaka, OONO Yasuyuki, HORII Yuuji and YAMAMOTO Naoki.

HORIE Nobuhiko introduced him to TAKAHASHI Yoshihiro.

Hara's own professional comic artist career began in 1982 with the publication of his first work, "Mad Fighter". He won the first prize of the 33rd "Fresh Jump" award for "Super Challenger".
His Weekly Shonen Jump debut was Iron Don Quixote. His distinctive art in Hokuto no Ken began in 1983; it was his first major work.

In 2000, he left Shueisha and co-founded Coamix with Horie, TSUGIHARA Ryuji & HOJO Tsukasa.

IMAIZUMI Shinji, MAKI Kouji, TODATE Shingo, MORITA Masanori, WATANABE Yasuhiro, DEGUCHI Ryusei, ONIKUBO Hirohisa, NAGASAWA Katsuhiro, HASEGAWA Tetsuya, YANAGIDA Touichirou, URAMOTO Yuuko & TANAKA Yoshiki had worked as his assistants.

AKIMOTO Osamu and him went to the same high school. He also friends with MIYASHITA Akira &
ARAKI Hirohiko.
