He was a Japanese author of proletarian literature. His most famous work is Kani Kousen (蟹工船 or Crab Canning Ship) which was first published in 1929. He was arrested in February, 1933 by the Special High Class Police (特別高等警察) because he was a member of the Japanese Communist Party and was tortured to death by them. He died at the young age of 29.
