Started as a kashihon mangaka in 1952. In 1955, TEZUKA Osamu recommended him to Shueisha and he made his debut in Omoshiro Book (which later became Monthly Shounen Jump). In 1956, he formed a coterie group with AKATSUKA Fujio, NAGASHIMA Shinji and ISHINOMORI Shotaro. From 1971 to 1991 he was one of the teachers of Bessatsu Margaret Shoujo Manga School, teaching shoujo manga artists such as WADA Shinji, YAMADA Mineko, ICHIKAWA Jun and KURAMOCHI Fusako. He also involved in selecting submitted works for the first issue of Hana to Yume.

ISHIKAWA Kyuuta was one of his assistants.

Passed away on November 14, 2004.
