Born into poverty as the youngest of four children, Fukushima was raised by his older brothers after both parents abandoned their children in short succession.

After graduating from high school Mori Masaki took him on as an assistant, his professional debut followed soon after in 1968 with "Shi no Koushinkyoku" (死の行進曲) in Comic VAN.

Fukushima became known for his portrayal of massively brawny men, a style which was soon dubbed "fleshbomb".

After having a number of hits in the 70's, including Nyohanbou and Saint Muscle, he suffered from a major burn-out, eventually disappearing from the manga scene in the early 80's.

Interest in his works resurged again when Ohta Shuppan reprinted Saint Muscle in 1998. Since then he has made a comeback, although his works appear rather irregularly.
