≠ - Not Equal3There are people to whom this plot will make sense: Freudians, believers in the concept of soulmates, people who think that men are sex-crazed animals, anyone willing to overlook gaping flaws in logic. Everyone else will be bewildered by how our 17-year-old MC, after mysteriously (it's never explained how it happens) going back in time to when his father was fourteen, decides after two weeks - yep, two weeks - that he's so madly in love with his father that he needs to introduce said father t...... View
3D Kanojo6I agree with momimomi's review below. The story started out so well! Then it turned into 95% pointless and annoying relationship drama, with a lot of emphasis being placed on the most boring of the side couples. My reading slowed to a crawl in the middle because I was so uninterested. I do think that the manga ended strong though, as if the mangaka had a plan for the beginning and the end and had no idea what she was doing the rest of the time.

Akaiito (MIYASAKA Kaho)6.5I remember Toru has a line in Dengeki Daisy where she says something like 'I wanted to be the shoujo girl who runs away'. This manga is the epitome of shoujo girls running away, shoujo guys running away, SO MUCH POINTLESS DRAMA that could have been avoided by ten seconds of honest conversation. The side couple is especially ridiculous with the length of time their misunderstandings persist. That being said, the art is pretty and I liked the main pairing. There were a number of nice cute/refre...... View

Angel Densetsu6.5It was okay. I felt that it did comedy fairly well, and some chapters were funny and enjoyable, but the multi-chapter fights were boring and repetitive. The characters were paper thin, which isn't necessarily an issue for a comedy manga, but the lack of character growth was astounding considering the situations presented. Ryoko was the only character who seemed somewhat similar to an actual human being and not as dumb as rocks. IMO the mangaka could have improved the manga by putting the gang...... View

Arigatou10Don't read the beginning chapters before bed, they'll give you nightmares. I was considering lowering my rating due to questioning the necessity of so much graphic rape content, but it emphasizes the absurdity of the father's decisions and sets the tone for the manga in the strongest way possible. There are so many moments of brilliant black comedy and social commentary in this story, and some surprisingly poignant moments too. None of the characters are likeable, but their lack of obligation...... View

Beautiful Fascination Is Better Than Love8Interesting manga with a manipulative, possibly sociopathic ML and a FL who despite being older is naive, immature and inexperienced. What seems at first like a fairly conventional student/teacher story takes a dark turn as the plot progresses and a gap in emotions becomes evident - this isn’t a romance manga so much as a psychological thriller, so definitely don’t read it with the expectation of seeing a cute couple. I didn’t mind the ending, it made sense with the way I see the charac...... View

Bunbetsu to Takan9This manga puts a dark spin on a oft-used plot device in shoujo manga - insta-love based on general qualities like physical attraction, popularity and niceness. The story is more about betrayal and revenge than romance, and none of the characters actually love each other (except possibly the boyfriend, who at least specifies that he likes something beyond the MC's general qualities, even if he can't describe what it is), and the NTR plot is the result of this weak type of affection.

The MC is ...... View

Dengeki Daisy10Teru is the best female lead of any shoujo I've read! She's strong, smart, insightful, not romantically dense, doesn't create silly drama, and she contributes to the character development of the male lead. The relationship is totally believable and there's a nice friends vibe along with the romantic one.

My main purpose in writing this review is to note that multiple scanlation groups translated a number of the chapters, including the chapters (somewhere between 30 and 40) that give Kurosaki's...... View

Fruits Basket8This manga has flashes of brilliance - I've read it multiple times and still get chills when Tohru first sees Akito. At other times it's just okay. The plot revolves around how the zodiac members form interpersonal relationships with others while connected with Akito, but I don't see the necessity of virtually every character ending up in an (often coincidential and contrived) romantic pairing. For instance the Ritsu pairing, Hatori pairing #2, Kyo's master pairing, even Yuki's eventual pairi...... View

Gakuen Alice8This manga was much better than I thought it would be based on the description and the first chapter. The setting is dark and convoluted: you have innocent kids who are removed forcefully from their families and trapped within a compound, their letters to their families are burned, and some are forced to perform unscrupulous missions outside the compound to the detriment of their health. Some of the teachers care about the students (yet mostly turn a blind eye to the school's policies) while ...... View

Hibari no Asa10This manga is fantastic! The characters are so well-developed and the heavy atmosphere made it a page turner for sure. The time skip at the end and subsequent ‘this is what became of so-and-so’ interactions felt somewhat clunky but I was otherwise so impressed that I decided not to lower my rating. Would definitely recommend for fans of dark and gritty manga like Oyasumi Punpun.

I Love You Baby10This manga was adorable! I haven’t read many true coming of age stories and really enjoyed this one. No filler, love rivals, pointless drama, ‘am I in love?’, obnoxious/harassing behaviour from the ML... none of the usual shoujo tropes, basically. The FL was weak but not annoying, there was a backstory to it, and she worked to improve herself. ML was sweet and more realistic than the ‘popular perfect guy’ that sometimes seems like the shoujo default. Art is beautiful.
Ichi the Killer8I love Ichi as a character so I wanted to like this manga more than I actually did. Ultimately I felt the plot was pretty weak, Kakihara's character imploded in the last few volumes, Kaneko's existence was ultimately meaningless, and we were never given a truly believable motivation for Jii-san's actions. I'm still giving it an 8 due to Ichi and some great moments.

Kokou no Hito9I really enjoyed this one. I'm not a climber, but a solo long distance backpacker, so it was awesome to see appearances from Platy, Golite, Snickers and other familiar pieces of gear. Mori well embodies the love for nature and lust for isolation that form the core of my sport.

Personal bias aside, the art is gorgeous and the story is well-structured. The only genuine gripes I have with this manga are: 1) How everything is too easy for the MC in the first few volumes, and 2) Most of the charact...... View

Kyousou Heaven2AHAHAHA THIS MANGA WAS ATROCIOUS. The initial plot point was based off the male lead being blackmailed by the ridiculous student council president, but the threat was proven to be ineffective as soon as was convenient for the mangaka. The main character was a typical Minami Kanan heroine (dumb, 'fell in love' after two seconds) but had an interesting moment of self-reflection when the student council president was like 'you know absolutely nothing about this dude and just like him because he ...... View

Nekota no Koto ga Ki ni Natte Shikatanai.8The premise of this story is so funny and cute that it makes up for some of the faults. There's not much plot, not much seriousness and virtually no drama despite the *many* love triangles. I'm not even sure of the purpose of most of the love triangles as a few were literally mentioned in passing and many were never relevant plot-wise. I guess one was used for humour.

In terms of characters, Amane is refreshing in some ways but also ridiculously dense, though this is partially explained by her...... View
NHK ni Youkoso!8The best word to describe this manga is 'irreverent'. From kiddy porn to popping pills to self-mutilation, no topics are sacred; the author approaches all with the same careless dark humour. The characters are self-loathing, selfish, angsty scum who you may like but probably won't - at any rate, you probably wouldn't want to take them out for coffee. The story reads as if the author was thinking 'fuck this' the whole time he was writing it and I think it's pretty good at what it tries to do. I ...... View

Otokonoko wa Hachimitsu5.5"If you don't like me, then at least bite off my tongue and let me die happy!"

The above is a prime example of the cringe-worthy prose this manga has to offer. The problem with all of the stories is that nothing really interesting or unique happens - the male and female lead fall in love, go through some doubts about each other's feelings, and then it ends. Plenty of shoujo oneshots pull off generic plots via comedy, but unfortunately the oneshots in this volume have only heaps of drama convey...... View

Oukoku Game5I gave it points because I liked the concept and it kept me interested. The execution was poor though, with most plot points being abandoned after their introduction - we saw barely anything about the powers, the real world content about fighting/taking over other kingdoms was stopped pretty abruptly, in the second stage most of the new characters were done away with in a clump and we never found put anything about them, the powers were forgotten with no comment in the second stage, and the e...... View

Real Clothes10I almost stopped reading four chapters in, since I hate consumerism and didn't know if I could tolerate the setting. I'm glad that I kept with it though. Ultimately the small gripes or personality clashes I have with this manga are overwritten by how well it handles the various issues that women traditionally face as women, including the idea that men are more entitled to work, the workplace dynamics of being a mother, lack of childcare options, etc... I loved how the MC valued her independen...... View

Savage Garden10Fantastic manga! I love how it creates atmosphere with the absence of speech, leaves the reader to figure out various things instead of stating them, has well-developed characters that aren’t stereotypes and emphasizes very well the feeling of being trapped within one’s situation whether by economic factors or duty. Also love the foreshadowing. I didn’t personally mind the last chapter or chapters, maybe it could’ve been fleshed out more but that didn’t impact my overall enjoyment o...... View
Seigi no Mikata7.5Funny story narrated by a girl coping with her all-powerful sister whose nasty acts coincidentally result in positive side effects that make her beloved by everyone. It’s a light comedy and there’s no significant character or relationship growth, either between the MC and her sister or the MC and her love interest. Though the main subject of the manga was how the sister interacted with people, the ending felt abrupt because the ongoing themes relating to the MC were never resolved. I agre...... View

SP x Baby3I have to agree with blackrosevirus's review below. It's hardly him 'just liking her legs' as suggested by the other reviewer. He hires her only to hit on her, makes her dress so that he can leer at her, and kisses her repeatedly after she's told him that she doesn't like it. If you're not understanding how this is sexual harassment, please try to imagine being an employee and your boss behaving in this way! Suki tte Ii na yo.9It's surprisingly romantic since, unlike in many shoujos, you have a realistic portrayal of physical attraction. It features a number of different friendships, including between side characters, rather than the 'ML and FL each have 1-2 friends that only exist when with the leads' situation. I love how it shows their lives after high school and the challenges they encounter in a much more realistic way than 'work hard and you'll get what you want'. Tobaku Datenroku Kaiji8.5Another fairly solid series. This one is entirely about Kaiji playing mahjong against a gross antagonist (can we have Ichijou back?) and the scanlators had some fun with his greasiness in their SFX translations in one of the chapters. I didn't know anything at all about mahjong before this series, but I read a few wikipedia articles and that was enough to understand what was going on. The main knowledge you need is the tile names, but understanding some of the terms was useful as well (like '...... View

Tobaku Datenroku Kaiji - One Poker Hen9The pacing was good for most of the manga (it does get slightly bogged down around the third quarter) and I liked how the game was more about strategy than cheating, so there was no waiting for dozens of chapters for Kaiji to discover how he was being conned.
Tobaku Hakairoku Kaiji9The second Kaiji series! This one was quite different than the first, which featured invented games and had a strong emphasis on trust, betrayal and sacrifice within the context of multiplayer games. The games in this series are real and it's about a single player finding ways to defeat a game that's rigged. There's more downtime, comedy and character development of Kaiji in this series, though still plenty of crying. I agree with the other reviewer in that some of the pacing is off, namely t...... View

I disagree with the below reviewer; I don't think the manga is about what society expects from women in terms of getting married or not, but simply 'what do you want' and 'if you want x, why are you doing x?'. The women aren't being pressured by outside forces - the pressure is something they're placing on themselves - but they go about trying to solve their problems in absurd, naive ways with a big helping of delusion, and ultimately don't even under...... View

It's funny, drama-free and cliché is barely present, though there are a few plot devices in the second half that shoujo/josei readers will probably have seen before.
