New Poll - Reading and Drinking
This week's poll is again from 8-3. Have you ever read manga while drinking alcohol? I've never even considered this because I don't drink that much...

You can submit poll ideas here

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Should names of food be translated?
No, translate none of them - votes: 2505 (41.4%)
Yes, all of them (e.g. "takoyaki" to "octopus balls") - votes: 338 (5.6%)
Only the uncommon ones (e.g. leave "takoyaki" alone but translate "kiritanpo") - votes: 3212 (53%)
There were 6055 total votes.
The poll ended: February 3rd 2018

In case you were wondering, I purposefully didn't have an option dealing with translation notes

Huh, the amount of people who don't drink is quite high here mmm...
Is it because of age restriction, prohibition by religion or anything else mmm...~?

But well, it's still just rolling, will see the end result mmm...

I don't drink, so no.

That should be our next poll. I don't have a particular reason for not drinking, I've just never liked it.

Well I've had alcohol and read some manga but it did not feel any different to me. Though I have to say this poll is pretty vague because drinking can also apply to non alcoholic beverages as the poll is stated at the voting part. The only way drinking and reading manga would be annoying for me is when reading manga in physical form instead of digital biggrin .

» Nekore on February 3rd, 2018, 9:07pm

I came hear to see if it meant alcohol or not lol

I purposefully didn't have an option dealing with translation notes

Which is why I didn't vote because any opinion about translation that discards TL notes is invalid and irrelevant.

» uzumakiwalid on February 3rd, 2018, 3:07am

I am assuming drink here refers to drinking an alcoholic type of beverages then my answer is no. Never drink one and possibly ever. My belief, sue me

» Senrosj on February 3rd, 2018, 4:15am

I don't really see why you would drink alcohol while reading manga, but my father drank beer while watching tv... still, I rarely drink. I had a bottle of white wine in my fridge for a long time and in the end I gave it away when I moved out. Last Christmas they gave me "Christmas" German beer and it still sits on my fridge. I drink with people, but I've never drank alcohol alone.

I never drank alcohol while reading manga and probably never will (at least if I'm not in the company of one of my idiot friends.)

» residentgrigo on February 3rd, 2018, 6:06am

Yes, but it made no difference, as i have read comics while being drunk once or twice i would say. But that wasn´t on purpose. I just continued my day after drinking alcohol.

» calstine on February 3rd, 2018, 6:20am

I don't drink alcohol, so #2 for me.

» dreamaway on February 3rd, 2018, 6:21am

Made no difference, although I've only ever tried it on series I've already liked so that's one factor. I probably won't try to drink when picking up something new because I wanna read it with a clear head especially since the first few volumes are the most impressionable.

» Trimutius on February 3rd, 2018, 7:16am

Well i don't drink so much that i would get very drunk... So it doesn't make any difference really if i drank before/while reading manga.

» MinatoAce on February 3rd, 2018, 11:50am

No, and I am not interested in trying. Even if I might have, it's not a significant feat to remember anyway.
I'm kinda party guy, so I hardly ever drank alone. Plus I'm not much of a drinker anyway (I tend to keep the limit in check between 500-750ml (not talking about beer, mead etc here) on your average season). I hate hungover as well you see, my body doesn't suit drinking I guess. Having lessen the amount of these occasions by these few years, I may quit drinking altogether. It holds no meaning/affecting to me anyway.

As for Reading Under Influence (RUI lol), Tried only Weed and Vodka (my choice of drink on the mainstream catalogue). Haven't ever read any fiction under influence, but I did study (academic) before. Weed does help you concentrating at times (considering you did a moderate amount), unless you're on Indica. Drinking is no help at all, it may even backfire.

Watching movies, TV series, stand-up comedy, funny clips and whatnot etc is always fun under influence, more so when you're with a group of people, friends for example.

I've only tried reading with a hangover. It was unpleasant. But then, everything is unpleasant when you're hung over.

» SilverStorm on February 3rd, 2018, 4:26pm

Maybe add drinking alcohol to the question. Non-fluent English speakers and youngsters might not know what's meant by "drinking."

» ceruleantear on February 4th, 2018, 1:24pm

I also believe the word "alcohol" should be added to the question.

I assumed it was referring to all drinks. To be honest, I thought it was a joke about trying to drink a coke out of the can while trying to read at the same time. Using a straw can easily fix this situation.

To answer the real question: No, I don't drink alcohol, so I've never done it while reading manga.

» blackkittycat15 on February 5th, 2018, 8:33am

I always read before bed, drunk or sober and it never made a difference in manga. Drinking makes games more immersive (and harder) and anime more funny but has no effect on manga for me.

» BlueHaro on February 6th, 2018, 7:20pm

Honestly I would rather game and interact with people while drinking alcohol. Reading anything while drinking doesn't allow me to concentrate whatsoever. I can maybe watch an anime while drinking with a friend as long as it's entertaining. laugh

Unless you mean nonalcoholic drinks? confused

» gormadoc on February 7th, 2018, 5:20pm

I read my now favorite chapter of Kaguya while I was pretty buzzed the first time (the fireworks chapter, pt 2) and it made it much more powerful.

Usually it doesn't matter. Both light drinking and manga are a part of most of my days.

» Anima on February 8th, 2018, 3:48am

I drink but not alcohol of any sort. A nice hot cup of coffee or chocolate works out just fine.

» train93 on February 8th, 2018, 4:16am

I don't really drink, unless I'm out with friends and even then it's never for the sake of it. I would assume the only true difference it would make being drunk is that it becomes difficult to actually read the words.

» SinsI on February 9th, 2018, 1:15am

No real point to it.
Alcohol has a peculiar effect on memory: it improves formation of memory you've acquired prior to drinking (so if you want to better remember what you've studied in the day, go and get drunk in the evening. And never drink after any traumatic experience, as it'll only etch the memory of the event deeper), and prevents formation of memory after, so whatever you read while drunk you'll just forget.

That being said, those who voted "no" might actually have tried it - they just don't remember it.

» iamssjvash on February 9th, 2018, 9:30am

I don't really drink often, especially at home, but I don't really recall the experience being significantly different. If anything I just think that it is harder to retain a clear recollection of what was read later on. Considering that in my situation there was no particulr specific benefit at the time, I'd rather keep a better rememberance of the material at a later date. My recommendation for activities while drinking (or after coming home after drinking) are a single player video game light on story and heavy on simplistic fun. My personal favotire is Dynasty Warriors franchise games.
