New Poll - Median Ratings
This is a simple but odd poll that was suggested by Shonaiula. In essence, it's about the medium score you would rate something.

You can submit poll ideas here

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Have you ever sung the lyrics of an anime's opening/ending out loud, while not watching it (even just a few words)?
No (or I won't admit to it) - votes: 824 (17.1%)
Yes, on purpose - votes: 2718 (56.5%)
Maybe, but not on purpose. It was just stuck in my head - votes: 1270 (26.4%)
There were 4812 total votes.
The poll ended: April 7th 2018

I still remember the first few OP/ED from Naruto

I tend to not rate at all if I'm indifferent about a series.

» silvarion on April 7th, 2018, 1:32am

I go with 7.
7 is the lowest rating I would give to a manga that I read until the end. if a manga has a rating (my own rating) of anything below that, I wouldn't be able to finish that manga, and if I don't finish a manga, I wouldn't give it a rating.

» Suxinn on April 7th, 2018, 2:09am

I don't rate manga unless I really hated it, really liked it, or felt it was really memorable.

For anime, "average" series are usually a 5 or a 6 for me, depending on how bored I felt watching it. 6 is usually "boring but with at least a sparkle of goodness" while 5 is usually "boring but with a sparkle of badness". I guess a true "neutral" series would be rated 5.5, then, but MAL unfortunately doesn't allow decimal ratings (and I don't think I've ever rated a 5.5 for a manga).

» VawX on April 7th, 2018, 2:54am

There's only five rating I use in Mangaupdates, no rating means super bad, won't read it, 7 is pretty bad but I still read it, 8 is bad, 9 is neutral / kinda good, 10 is pretty good to super good mmm...

» residentgrigo on April 7th, 2018, 4:51am

5, if there really is nothing to show basic quality that would make me worth going on at least by one more chapter. 50/100 is either an F or a -D, so it´s a failure state either way. Just you know, nothing worthy being angry about either. Or talking. Or showing emotion.
Good god are truly mediocre products forgettable.

Edit: _America
Everything up to 48/100 is a failing grade in the US.

» gormadoc on April 8th, 2018, 9:08am

It can vary by school district, but an F is usually 0-59%. Many school districts fail for a D as well, so there it's 0-69%.

» Trimutius on April 7th, 2018, 5:09am

If i am neutral but don't dislike it then it is a 6 for me.

» MinatoAce on April 7th, 2018, 6:10am

Depending on the genre combo I may give it 8-8.5 as well.

» Senrosj on April 7th, 2018, 7:13am

6. 7 would be more of, "It's decently good, but nothing great. Kind of meh."
6 is more of a, "It's kind of meh, but not bad."
5 is mediocre and it's kind of bothersome to finish the manga. If I rate something 5 or lower, it means that anything good the manga may have is overshadowed by its crappiness to a certain degree.

Don't really like how the poll is worded. If a series fails to make me feel something (ex. feel neutral), and that doesn't have to be limited to making me feel love or hate btw, then I would say it fails. Also I'm probably not going to finish it and therefore it doubly fails.

Now if we are talking about series that are mediocre in some way then that's a different thing to me. I generally give better series or ones that I like scores in the 8-10 range. Series that I find bad end up in the 1-3 range. Everything else is in the middle and runs the gamut from decent but flawed (usually a 7), mediocre with good elements (usually a 6), down to bland or mediocre with some irritating elements (usually 4-5). Really anything 5 or less is not good or worth spending time on.

» train93 on April 7th, 2018, 1:28pm

I'd say 6. If I didn't hate it and I could finish it, then there's at least that going on for the manga. I don't understand why someone would rate a series, that didn't amount to anything, higher than 6. At least where I live, 7 is already considered a pretty good score, 8 means that something is great, 9 means that everything is great, and 10 means it is perfect. It's so weird that series on this site that have a 7-7.5 average score are often pretty bad, and in an objective way.

» kayue on April 7th, 2018, 7:41pm

I’m with the 6-7ers. If I liked it enough to finish it, it’s a 7. There must have been some merit to it. Where it be the writing, characters or setting.

If I liked it enough to start it, but not finish it (not bad, just not interesting enough to continue right now), it’s a 5-6.

» Identity Crisis on April 7th, 2018, 7:44pm

I don't bother finishing things I dislike anymore, so my neutral is probably a six.

» Vicis on April 7th, 2018, 7:49pm

I wouldn't usually finish a series that I think deserves a 5 or lower.

So that makes a big difference in my scoring. If I finish a series, and feel neutral about it, it's probably getting a 6 or maybe even a 7. It wasn't anything special, but it managed to keep me reading to the end.

However, if something is so bland that I drop it halfway through, or even sooner, it's never going to get higher than a 5. I think there are different levels of mediocrity, and not everything that I feel neutral towards necessarily deserves a straight up 5.

A series could be exceptionally mediocre, and a pain to read, or it could be derivative and predictable, but still slightly fun to read. In both cases, I would probably feel pretty neutral towards the series.

» KaoriNite on April 7th, 2018, 8:14pm

I've noticed that over the years, I've started rating manga harsher. In the past, I would give a 7.5 if I thought the manga was average. Now I would give it a 6.

» butako chan on April 8th, 2018, 11:41pm

You still rate more leniently than I do haha. I'd give a mediocre manga a 5/10. But yea, I've found as I've consumed more and more manga, my standards have definitely gotten higher as well. That's natural.

» FormX on April 7th, 2018, 11:04pm

Really people, choosing 10...?

» Senrosj on April 8th, 2018, 12:44pm

Maybe they rate it from 1 being the very best and 10 being the worst thing ever. Most likely trolls though.

» Sugarshark on April 8th, 2018, 8:24pm

I think 6/10 for me is 'readable' where you wouldn't get so bored that you'd quit in the middle of a chapter for anything at all
probably 7/10 if it was well done but just didn't do it for me; this phenomena is a natural consequence of consuming those hundred?thousand?? series that shaped my perception of greatness

» butako chan on April 8th, 2018, 11:39pm

It would have been nice to have an option not to rate it/drop it. I usually don't bother rating something that I find mediocre. But otherwise, 5/10 would be my choice.

» Vocah on April 9th, 2018, 2:03am

Not that I really rate stuff, but my starting point would be 5, if I like it it would rise, if I don't like it it would drop.

» SinsI on April 9th, 2018, 4:26am

The question is - if i feel neutral about a series, why would I keep reading it?
If I read something, I'm automatically not neutral about it.

» HikaruYami on April 9th, 2018, 8:29am

The thing about this poll is, the true middle of a rating system that goes from 1 to 10 (rather than 0 to 10) is 5.5. People think of 5 as the median, but that's actually in the lower half if 0 isn't a valid response.

So I tend to "round up" and rate it 6--but I would go with 5 if our rating system on mangaupdates allowed 0 as a valid score.

» tribal2199 on April 10th, 2018, 1:09pm

7 means I think that it's just OK. Below that means I don't like it, with a 5 or lower meaning I probably dropped the series entirely.
