New Poll - Interrobang
Our member GodricKharg brought up the question of interrobangs, so here's a poll about them (not the question he asked, but it's related). In case you're curious, here's the Wikipedia article:

You can submit poll ideas here

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Many magazine scans have extraneous pieces of text over the actual manga content. What should the translator do?
Leave it untranslated. It's not important. - votes: 2424 (56.5%)
Translate everything on the page. Every. Single. Thing. - votes: 1864 (43.5%)
There were 4288 total votes.
The poll ended: June 2nd 2018

If it's not related to the manga you're reading, why bother translating it?

I myself use ' ?! ' during conversations all the time.
Thus, I chose it.

» calstine on June 2nd, 2018, 4:06am

I always go with "!?" since it looks less awkward to me.

» RoxFlowz on June 2nd, 2018, 5:40am

Interesting question tbh

» cmertb on June 2nd, 2018, 7:09am

I always use !? because it's what the Japanese standard seems to be. Also, it looks more stable as a shape.

» svines85 on June 2nd, 2018, 7:12am

Always "?!". I don't know that it's that big of a deal which one you choose, but I settled on that one a long time ago and have stuck to it ever since. Always the same for the sake of uniformity, even if it's a bubble with nothing but the raw "!?" I change it to "?!".

Mmm, I see cmertb ninja'd me, yeah, that most of the time you'll see "!?" used in Japanese is actually (as I remember) part of why I settled on "?!" for the English version. Japanese is read right to left, it makes a strange kind of sense to me to flip them to reflect English being read left to right biggrin
(yeah, don't read too much into it, as I said I think it's as much personal preference as anything smile )

» cmertb on June 3rd, 2018, 9:39am

Actually, modern Japanese is read left to right when written horizontally, and !? is always horizontal even when the text is vertical -- it occupies the space of one character. But you know that. smile

» MangaGhost on June 2nd, 2018, 7:14am

I've always used ?!
In my head the emotion/excitement often comes at the end of the question.
Sometimes if really excited ?!!

» Moirae on June 3rd, 2018, 4:41pm

I agree.

What if you are really excited?

Are you serious?!!!!!

?! just looks better to me, but as long as I understand the meaning I suppose either is fine.

» F_J on June 2nd, 2018, 9:43am

I like ?! cause the question mark is closer to the shift... and cause its like (when read in english) 'what (?)'/shock/surprise then 'oh my (!)'/excitement... it feels weird to have the excitment first then go 'huh?'

» Trimutius on June 2nd, 2018, 10:34am

I use "?!" because I think that question mark is more important for the conversation.

» Nekore on June 2nd, 2018, 10:38am

Depend on the intention for me, if it's more shouting I do !? if there's more doubt ?!

» Unified on June 2nd, 2018, 11:54am

^ exactly. I think both are good but the emphasis seems to fall on the first to appear.

» vigorousjammer on June 2nd, 2018, 11:59am

I prefer ?!, since the exclamation point can sometimes get a bit lost when it comes first using certain fonts.

I also feel like I tend to see ?! more often in English writing, so it makes more sense to use it when translating to something into English.

» Transdude1996 on June 2nd, 2018, 12:23pm

I prefer "?!" because it's a question first and foremost.

» jonytep on June 4th, 2018, 2:29am

Yeah, I think this way as well. "?!". I always think of the sentence that preceeds these marks as an "Exclamative interrogation", rather than an "Interrogative exclamation".

Personally, I use "?!", but it doesn't bother me much when I see people using "!?".

» ahiijny on June 2nd, 2018, 6:19pm

I use "!?" for Japanese dialogue and "?!" for English dialogue.

» Perim on June 2nd, 2018, 7:20pm

‽ this one.

» symuri on June 2nd, 2018, 8:28pm

?! just seems so weird for me

» Keel on June 3rd, 2018, 6:23pm guys are really running out of ideas. Might i suggest redoing some classics? see if opinions have changed over the years.

!? looks cringy

» silver and blue on June 5th, 2018, 4:28am

Oh, i just did.

» krytyk on June 5th, 2018, 11:09am

"?!" is the standard in English, all kinds of English (and not only English) literature and stuff uses "?!". It's a choice based on punctuation hierarchy. Of course, there are exceptions since it's not a "hard rule", but big publishers and editors will always choose "?!". This is also the case with Western manga publishers.

"!?" is Japanese standard though, well, it's perfectly fitting for weaboos.
