New Poll - Why MU?
This week's poll was suggested by crossyuuki. Oddly enough, I don't think we've ever asked this question before. We've never really done a survey on who our users are and why they stay

You can submit poll ideas here
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Do you believe in ghosts and/or supernatural things in general?
Choices:
Does/Do God/gods count? - votes: 560 (11.1%)
I don't and will never believe - votes: 840 (16.7%)
I believe they exist but haven't seen them - votes: 1374 (27.3%)
I don't believe, but could change my mind if I see something - votes: 1856 (36.9%)
I've seen them - votes: 395 (7.9%)
There were 5025 total votes.
The poll ended: June 30th 2018

Seeing is believing, eh?

It was kinda random. But, mainly To create my own series list, as my ever-growing lists ware growing larger day by day and becoming very hard to maintain on a text file at time which I used to do to keep track.
Also To find a new series to read obviously. Duh!

This is actually the exact reason why I joined MU.

Now that I've learned how invaluable the Lists function is, I don't think I can ever leave.

It seems a lot of us have forgotten why or how we first got to MU. I think I found this site through some mentioning of it on one of those aggregate reader sites. I was in elementary then and didn't realize aggregate sites took scans from scanlators until I found MU.

Ah. Right. I completely forgot onemanga, it's been so long! But yes, once that site died, it's been Mangaupdates for me.

thread

It's been so long that I don't remember exactly, but I think I stumbled onto the site while I was searching for info on the source manga of an anime I watched. And that was the beginning of an almost decade-long love affair...with no end currently in sight biggrin bigrazz

to keep up to date with manga release. i remember those times there were only a handfull of manga aggregator and some scanlator didn't have website or the website is not updated. this question really takes me back. naruto and bleach were still in tenth chapters and the famous manga were kaminomi pretty face and gto

I was looking for info on a specific series or author and i signed up to to create my own series list, as mangatraders was running behind on a few series.

thread

» vigorousjammer on June 30th, 2018, 9:40am

My answer would be "other".
I actually only heard about the site after already joining a scanlation group, believe it or not! laugh
The first time I came to the site is because my group just had me release a chapter, and they wanted me to post it on here. eyes

Kinda hard to remember by now....

Probably to see which new chapters were released (no matter if I already followed a series or not).

I'm also in the camp where I can't remember exactly why I "first" came to MU. I feel the reason I registered was to find new series or keep track of what I was reading?

I think I had seen the site around before I actually tried using it/registering though. I probably had googled manga names and clicked on MU thinking it was a reading website before.

I don't remember why I started using MU. However, I was using the site for around a year before actually registering for an account. I got an account to edit some series info, because I just don't like the sight of inaccurate data, you know.

Man, I haven't the faintest idea... Definitely to keep track of my lists now though.

It seems a don't remember option would have been popular, I'm really not sure what I wanted (2, 3 or 4 are the more probable) But I really liked when we easily had the groups links before so you can easily read in their page instead of going to aggregator sites.

Because manga jouhou got too big for its britches.

I was already using baka-updates (which was way more "alive" at the time than it is now), I started shifting from watching anime to reading manga in 2006 mostly because of the truly ridiculous sequential number of Naruto filler episodes, and that's when I found this website. I didn't make my account until 5 years later because I didn't see an account as necessary (I never went on the forums and if the "reading list" features already existed, I didn't know about them). I'm pretty sure I was linked here directly from baka-updates--mangahelpers didn't even exist yet in 2006 so it wasn't from there. But yeah, I picked "to find where to read or download manga" because the feature I most used was the direct link to scanlator's websites (since this was long before mangaupdates even implemented its short-lived internal manga reader).

Like many others, I can't remember my first visit to MangaUpdates. But I know that when I was using it in the beginning, I used it mainly to find new manga to read.

I'm pretty sure I stated using this site "To find a new series to read." But once here I started using the forums, and was very active for a while.

bigger database and you can make custom lists

I actually registered here only after I found out about NU which is strictly for asian novels. I was looking a place to have a list of the manga I've read/am reading and that was MU. I probably visited MU before that, but I really can't remember. If I did, it would have been to read the synopsis of a manga I wanted to read (but I feel like I would have done that in Batoto.)

I was that guy who had his own list of anime and manga I was watching/reading in an evernote note until I found out about MAL, NU and MU xD I still have those notes cause of nostalgia and it was the only way I could actually remember what I had watched/read during the times I didn't use MU and the rest.

This is 100% me. I had a notebook where I'd keep erasing in pencil the chapter I was on for each series as new chapters came out and a spreadsheet for the anime I was watching. Finding websites to do this made my life a lot simpler.

Can't really remember any longer. Was too long ago now.

Which was a phase when I was reading a lot of manga and most was found on IRC. So I likely joined to keep track of what I was reading and which IRC channels to go to when Lurk didn't have it. Or was that channel later?

thread

» HikaruYami on July 5th, 2018, 10:36am

#lurk did indeed exist in 2006 (started in 2004), but I never actually used it for some reason. I remember getting some manga from IRC, but only about a quarter? #null was the only group for which I remember literally never finding releases anywhere but IRC. Usually groups had direct download links to .rars of the chapters, even back then.

I only discovered MU in 2006 but I had at least started to read manga online in 2004.... I remember AQS scanlations of Negima from as early as 2005, and I think it was in 2004 that I first discovered two Yahoo Groups... one for Naruto and one for One Piece. Clearly sister groups, as far as I know they contained the most up-to-date scanlations at the time, and I remember people from those groups founding the Arlong Park forums and maybe even mangahelpers? Wow how times have changed.

Negima was my first series as a scanlator, back in 2005 with AQS. The original reason I joined MangaUpdates was to add our releases here.

Yes, I remember that it was your name on most (if not all?) of the release posts smile Sorry the group didn't live to the end of that series! I never watched the group's subtitled anime tbh, I only read your negima releases XD

Onemanga died and I needed a way/base to keep track of what I was reading.
