MU, You're 14!
Greetings all,

It's a few days late, but I just wanted to say Happy Birthday MU! It's hard to believe that it's been such a long time. I know I don't do this usually, but this birthday is special. Read on to find out why...

Some interesting facts from when the site was founded:

- In 2004, cell phones were still just barely in their infancy. Flip phones were the norm, and the first iPhone wouldn't be released until 2007, almost 3 years later.

- There were no javascript or css frameworks. There were no php frameworks. PHP 5 was only released 7 days earlier on July 14th. Wordpress was only recently founded. (This site is primarily written in PHP, JavaScript and CSS. Imagine what 14 year old code looks like under the covers...)

- IE6, Netscape 7.2, Firefox 1.0, and Safari 1.2 were the primary browsers. Chrome wouldn't launch for another 4 years in 2008. Developing this site usually involved having IE6 and Netscape open, and ensuring that every change (written in notepad) worked in both browsers. Those were the days ...

- Facebook was founded in February. Google is at $85 a share. Social media site Digg launches. World of Warcraft launches. Reddit and YouTube aren't launched till a year later. Twitter doesn't launch until 2006. MySpace was only launched in the previous year.

Fourteen years before 2004 was 1990. In that year, the first website was launched at CERN. The first web-browser was created by Tim Berners-Lee. The Internet was fourteen years old when MU was created, and it's been exactly fourteen years now since then. After today, there will officially be more time since MU was created and now than between the time the Internet started and MU began.

How long can she go? Here's for another 14!

Only if we can update the design a little

thread

» blackkittycat15 on July 24th, 2018, 1:02pm

Remember when it use to be 800 x 600? Those were the days.

Honestly I love the site because they don't move things around and it's so lightweight. Facebook's perpetual load on my old Firefox will crash the browser because it never stops loading and runs out of memory. That's poor design (and I haven't logged on in a month and want to see everything).

Happy Birthday!
Lol, I thought the site was older, but this is still an important day.
Hopefully, their are many years to go!
lambchopsil is right, it needs an update. As well as the design as some functions are outdated.

thread

And I'm only 1 year younger ? Damn, now I feel ancient!

thread

» HikaruYami on July 24th, 2018, 6:20am

The internet protocol was in use for significantly longer--computers talking to each other is all that "the internet" is. But yes, the first actual website, and therefore the point of an "internet browser", was made that late. Actually it was August 1991 that it went live, not 1990.

It's kind of amazing to think that I might be one of the longest-active members here apart from the admins. I had no idea that MU was so young when I first started using it back in 2008.

Anyway! A Very Happy Birthday, MU, and thanks for always being awesome! Here's to many more years of being the best manga info site on the web!

thread

» RoxFlowz on July 23rd, 2018, 6:03am

That's quite amazing! Happy birthday MU

thread

» naafx8 on July 23rd, 2018, 6:47am

WOW, that was quite amazing fact to know. Especially how much difficulty to develop this site a that time. When there are no sophisticate development tools available in this age.
I hope MU will be there for infinite years later ?

» svines85 on July 23rd, 2018, 7:41am

Heh, cell phones...? I remember having a pager and pulling over to catch a pay phone whenever I'd get beeped and that being the cutting edge of technological advances. The first cell phones I remember seeing looked like old-style field walkie talkies and they came in like a briefcase set-up they were so big and bulky. Yeah, don't get me going on feeling "old" ?

A very happy birthday, and much thanks to everybody for helping keeping it going and wishes for another 14+ years or so ?

This little message really makes you think about how things changed in such a short time and how time flies. Also, you put a lot of effort to create this wonderful place where our community can unite and discuss about manga. I really want to thank you for working so hard for such a long time. You have come a long way and I hope we will be able to celebrate many more anniversaries together! Happy birthday, MU! User Posted Image

Happy birthday, MU!

Man, I remember when I first joined MU, I had just gotten off dial-up and while my internet was still slow as molasses (I literally brought a book to the computer room and read it while waiting for pages to load), it was still a treat not to have to reconnect the internet whenever my grandma decided to use the phone. (And, yes, I was one of those rare kids who still had dial-up into 2008... My mom still used floppy disks back then.) I used a flip/slide phone up until 2013 too, so I guess our family is just really slow on the technological updates.

On that note, while an updated MU design would be great, I'm still fond of MU's current design. It was one of the few sites that loaded with little problems back when I was on (extremely slow) DSL.

Thanks, MU, for always being here even in the "old" days of the internet!

And the site still looks as ancient as it ever did (not a bad thing ?). Kinda hoping nothing changes aesthetics wise but at the same time a revamp would be nice. Its a pretty conflicting feeling. Looking forward to looking back again 14 years from now!

That being said, I'd love seeing an android version of the site!
I have to ask, why didn't you guys ever run ads? I love the site so much I wouldn't mind it having ads crawling ALL over the humongous free space on the sides of the page which probably would amont to way more than donations.
