Beta Manga Recommendations + Series Comments Organization
We got two new babies out today~ The first will probably be more important to you...

Beta Manga Recommendations
Yes, you read correctly. We finally have some sort of system for recommendations. Go to a series page (a more popular series, please), and beneath the [Genre] field, you'll see a new [Recommendations] field. More relevant series will be in brighter shades of green (at least it's green right now) highlighting, and less relevant series will have more faded green until it turns white. A good example of this is on the series page for Bleach.

Currently, the system is auto-generated and in beta form. It's a work in progress. Only a little more than 1000 series currently even have any recommendations. We're planning to soon have users enter their own suggestions.

As always, you can ask for manga recommendations from forum users in the I'm Looking For... forum.

Series Comments Organization
Remember how a few months back we added a question "Did you find this comment useful?" for series comments and you just had to click Yes/No? Well, we finally did something with it...You can now organize series comments by usefulness, as rated by our members. Not that useful for some of you...Well, you got any better way to use that info? If so, throw us the suggestion!

The site keeps getting better, the recommendations are perfect for when you need a feed of manga and don't know where to sink your teeth into. XD!

Purely random?# of overlapping genres? # of overlapping readers? filtering on rec threads asking for similar? It's hard to give technical suggestions without knowing the current scheme

How do you determine which series is more relevant and belongs in the darker green section?

perhaps by genre? Alot of mangas have the same genres listed, but as lambchopsil said, there is only 1000 or so mangas on the possible list. And I'm guessing those 1000 mangas are by reading list/completed list...

I've always wanted a recommendation system! Thank you so much for working on one!

I'm glad to see that I wasn't the only one who thought that recommendations were an obvious next step with your database as huge as it is. Since they're beta and obviously not exactly up to snuff yet, I'm not going to comment on any of that. I hope this becomes a great new way for people to come into contact with stories they may never have considered before.

Looking forward to user-input into the recommendation results. *thumbs up*

I love this new feature and it looks like it has a ton of potential! Thank you so much for your hard work ^^.

Perhaps a modify plan needs to be done. Is it me and my Firefox, or is it that when you expand the list (by clicking on "more"), there is no button to hide it back? The list is long when expanded, so maybe a link to hide the contents would help.

Anyway, i do feel that the Series Comment Organization thing is useful, but i like the Beta Manga Rec system better. It is something ManagaUpdates needs to widen the popularity and usefulness!

I love all the new features! I've been waiting for some of these for a while. This is the first site I go to for manga info. You guys do such a good job with the site. Thank you so much!

I'm incredibly glad you guys implemented a system for the series comments. I've always wanted some way to look through comments more efficiently, and this method is gets the job done. Thank you very much.

MU is turning out to be an invaluable site. Keep up the great work guys.

thread

» lambchopsil on September 18th, 2008, 5:35pm

You can't yet. It said so in the news post if you actually read it...

For recommendations, they usually ask from a genres point, then ratings, then volumes. So I suggest we arrange a listing based on search engine:

Allow listings along multiple genres, so that they can get a list of manga fits their genres specifications

Along that line you allow to rearrange that list accordding to ratings.

And some like short and sweet while others prefer to break their teeth on multiple volumes. So you allow a rearrangement according to the number of releases of each series. While info about its original raws's volumes maybe incorrect and hard to check, info about releases are easy found and can be rearranged, right? For old finished manga you simply add a complete tag, as well as number of vols released (easily checked on lurk's bots).

Auto-recommendation list! With cherry on top!

I've used it a bunch of times already. I'll go thru phases where there's a particular manga I really really like but I've already read it all and I want something similar. Please keep it!

What might make the recommendation system more useful would be to allow users to rate the relevance with a thumb up and thumb down like we can with the comments. Still, it's a good start and I've already found it useful.

This sounds great! One suggestion I have is to have the yes/no affect comments overall, not just for the user logged in. So voting yes would make the comment stay on the first page longer, or bump it up, and voting no would bump it down. That way the one line "this is a great manga" comments can be filtered out and we can see more in-depth reviews. 8D

And, maybe put an option that lets you either organize comments yourself, or show what other users have voted, to keep the original idea?
