Meep-Scans Closes (And Possibly ShoujoMagic)
Apparently, today, Meep-Scans is closing its doors to the scanlation world. We wish the rest of you well on your endeavors.

In related news, ShoujoMagic, one of the oldest and most esteemed shoujo scanlation groups, will also possibly shut down soon. Visit their site for more details.

Edit: The reason behind the closing of Meep-Scans is the following:
They were sent a Cease and Desist letter from Daiwon, the legal publisher (in Korea) of most/all of their projects.
Reminder: Scanlators DO operate outside copyright laws. No matter how you justify it, scanlations are illegal (even if the series is not licensed in your country)

This is probably the worst news I've heard relating to anime/manga ever...

» markdarkangel on February 12th, 2009, 3:47pm

You and me both sad

» Kratos330 on February 11th, 2009, 8:01pm

Wow, this is ummm sad. Well, hopefully someone comes back and takes their place, but I'm going to miss Meep.

» thevampirate on February 11th, 2009, 8:22pm

Meep is one of my favorite scanlation groups. i hope some of its members still wish to continue scanlating (that would make it easier to pick up some of their series)

» FullArmageddon on February 11th, 2009, 8:25pm

I so hope that someone pics up Aflame Inferno and Immortal Regis. Those are my favorite manhwa.

» Artimidorus on February 11th, 2009, 8:33pm

Wow, nothing was noted in the last chapter of Regis... it just seems super sudden. sad I really liked meep.

I am sorry for the people who read stuff from ShoujoMagic, and while I didn't care about the group, it is sad to see such a huge group go.

» Naturalrice on February 11th, 2009, 8:54pm

We're not closing... we're just going to release the last chapter and maybe we'll just continue doing as we are... Some faggy Korean kid decided to report us to the authorities...

» Artimidorus on February 11th, 2009, 8:58pm

Stupid kid. ~_~
Glad you guys will still release, maybe make like.. shadow releases or something... release only to RSS, or do like Yuki-sama scans when (I think) she, was still around?
I see zero reasoning behind reporting a group, it isn't like meep is stealing all the business away... too many Korean kids decided to read the English scans to save a dollar or so? Yeesh.

» be0wulf on February 11th, 2009, 9:57pm

Protip: What meep was doing was illegal. Meep got shut down. Life goes on.

» darkreaper on February 11th, 2009, 11:56pm whos cares if itz illegal..i sure as hell dont... anywayz those companys takes years to tranlste ...who is ganna w8 so long?? but good thing meep is hopefully contuning
dont really care abt the shoujo but sad for it as well

» phae2y on February 12th, 2009, 7:08am

Last time i checked RSS stands for "Real Secret Scanlations"

btw, to meep-scans hope you guys will figure out a way to continue biggrin. though i only read la mosca of all your series...

» samanthaknd on February 13th, 2009, 5:16pm

well all I can say is, most of us english only users wouldn't be able to read unlicensed manga/manhwa if it wasnt for the translators that take the time out of their days to translate for us, so even if it is illegal I support them all the way!.

» darkreaper on February 12th, 2009, 12:01am

Artimidorus...RSS? wats that?? i donno T-T tell mee plz...
will the realeases appear on mangatraders?
and Naturalrice ya guys ganna make another site or do like RSS (watever that is)??

» Artimidorus on February 12th, 2009, 12:15pm

Well, by RSS I just meant a sub site on their site that showed the latest updates. They could list it under like... meepscans/site/somerandomstuff/something for the rss, and only the people who know would see it through their programs/addons. I was just suggesting it as an alternative to actually updating the website, the idea came from a recent rash of servers shut down from Blizzard, and one site hiding their stuff showing their site was down, and hiding all their site functions through subdomains and folders, and different php sites. They are still going, and dozens of others are gone.

» Otakkun on February 13th, 2009, 5:30am

I hope we can keep getting more Aflame Inferno and Immortal Regis. Those are really interesting.

» kawaiibaka on February 14th, 2009, 2:24pm

» cliff on February 11th, 2009, 8:55pm

wow.... I'll be sad if shoujomagic closed down. They have some great stuff up there sad

» danccm on February 11th, 2009, 10:31pm

Well i heard meep-scans got a C&D from Diawon the korean publishing company that asked them to shut down. man this bad...i like the series done by koraen manhwa(translated) will be in malaysia ever....

» Elcrane on February 12th, 2009, 12:12am

Actually, there are manwha translated to Chinese in Malaysia (: (I don't read the BM ones, so I don't know). Just drop by Kinokuniya and you'll see quite a few or you can always just order.

I don't read scanlations from SM or Meep, but it's always shocking to see scanlators closing down or get closed down.

» danccm on February 12th, 2009, 12:52am

i can't read chinese so thats another big blow to me..

» Elcrane on February 12th, 2009, 1:49am

Ahh, guess I can't help you then :/

» Teqq on February 12th, 2009, 4:52am

Like naturalrice said, it was from someone with apparently no official authority.. however, he reported them to the Korean council. Ask Yuumei if the group is still going.

» Teqq on February 12th, 2009, 4:59am

Oh yeah, and I would like to emphasize and reiterate lamb's last point. I finally got around to trudging through the couple of pages of text for international copyright law and the links to the Universal Copyright Convention, the Berne convention, and the WIPO. Almost all the countries (at least, the majority of the one represented by scanlators) have signed on board the Berne Convention (which made the UCC obsolete once the United States conceded to join Berne) and that means automatically all countries who are members of the convention will uphold each other's copyrights, basically. The author's right to designate who may translate his/her work is a part of that copyright. So all scanlation, and even translation is illegal (in those member countries... which is basically almost all of them).

» Teqq on February 12th, 2009, 5:06am

Ugh. Should have remembered to add this to the above. Sorry for so many comments. EVEN IF THE AUTHOR DIED, you have to realize the copyrights are still valid for up to FIFTY YEARS after the author's death for literary works under Berne.

» L3zl13 on February 12th, 2009, 10:11am

So the question is which country isn't among the subscribers of the Bern convention and how to take the scanlation group headquarters there, at least virtually...

» phillip898 on February 13th, 2009, 1:33pm

hear is a link to all the country's included in the Berne convention country's included are in blue

» Romashk on February 11th, 2009, 11:15pm

It's sad, but each scanlated chapter is a stab to its original publisher and author. So, it's normal for old groups to close down.
I'm just glad, that nobody takes more offensive methods smile

I've been on forums that closed down before. It's heartbreaking, but noth lifethreatening smile .

» lokon on February 12th, 2009, 12:07am

Wow...That's a shame. Meep-scans is one of my favorite scanlation groups.

» VampireBanana on February 12th, 2009, 12:51am

It's sad(even though I don't read any of their projects) but it's to be expected. The more visibility you get, the higher the risks of getting a C & D like Snoopycool and other groups have received.

Also, does this mean that most or all of their projects were from the same publisher? If so, then I understand why they closed.

» VampireBanana on February 12th, 2009, 12:52am

Oh and about ShoujoMagic, sad I see... then again, when one of the main founders disappears along with almost all the staff, there's little to be done about it.

» Anima on February 12th, 2009, 2:44am

What will happen to Aflame Inferno now...

» onizukaa on February 12th, 2009, 5:47am

Im gonna make this out worse than it is, so faint of heart should look away biggrin

Wow... Just... Wow... Ppl are in trouble and are forced to shut down, and you dont even give a *hit about it. "WHAT ABOUT AFLAME INFERNO? WUT ABT IMMORTAL REGIS?!?!?" Why not "What about the members of meep?" "What about the owner of the domains?" You guys are fuckin selfish, Get the fuck out of your mothers basement and get out in the world.

End of Abusive message.

Oh a happier note, Im sure some people will anonymously release them after a while. And if push comes to shove, im sure you guys(Being the ppl who bitch and complain, yet keep their hands "clean") Will get off your asses and do it after a while

» Fluffy_chan on February 12th, 2009, 7:19am

well I agree so much with you onizuka ! I was thinking : what about the members of meep ?!! but after I thought.... I wanna add that... there was really one person in this group who really made it possible and worked hard (this person made sure the scanlation was good enough for all of us fan!!)... but some others were lazy and not so reliable and he had to work and redo so many times !! maybe it is not so bad the group shut down if you think about it @_@ one person working so much for the benefit of the whole group all the time@_@ no way ! ... well as a fan of course I am sad the group shut down ! i was like WTH what is happening to them?!!!! but still !!!!!!! T_T I know I am harsh ... but knowing this I can't just keep quiet anymore@_@
I just wanted to say in the end thankssss for the hard work !!! smile

» thevampirate on February 12th, 2009, 3:41pm

IMMORTAL REGIS is owned by the company who sent the letter while Aflame is not. meep could continue doing Aflame but doing only one project isn't what meep probably wanted to do.

» Dubby on February 12th, 2009, 7:02am

It was a C&D. Uh, sorta.

Weird Korean law that anyone can speak up for a company if it's about legal procedures or some shit...

Sorry, lost the exact thing. -_- But yes the faggy korean kid that sent the letter was representing Daiwon, and has every right to.

» Chaoswind on February 12th, 2009, 7:35am

Is a shame v_v

But life goes on and some Shadowy releases should be enough.

PS: No it won't be in mangatraders anymore, so grab your Hard drive and start to download cause all those chapies are going to disappear of Popular download sites... just give it a few months

» Naturalrice on February 12th, 2009, 7:45am

Dude.. I'm not trying to start a freaking war over this copyright stuff... but we do realize it's illegal, I am not providing any more information over our group... It is LEGAL for a person to report and give out warnings about stuff like this and we understand he is a good semaritan for doing so. I am, however, very ticked about this matter.

» Anima on February 12th, 2009, 8:28am

So am I....

» eyeshield777 on February 12th, 2009, 1:40pm

Sigh... what the kid did what rite like you said and i respect that...
But if I ever came face to face with him... psssh it'd be a different story D:<

» tactics on February 12th, 2009, 9:43am

embarrassed Meep scans were my fav scanlating group!

And they scanlated my two favourite manwah!

Noooooo! Ah man thats just ruined my day.

Stupid authorities XD

» jijiey on February 12th, 2009, 10:52am

Guess no more Immortal Regis... even if a new group continues the project they will stop eventually. This sucks, i was looking forward to this manwha.

» qwert123 on February 12th, 2009, 10:58am

it's a shame, in the internet there are many illegal stuf that noone cares about, like software, music, books, but why care about scanlators that doesn't give any financial loss to the publishers

» theone06 on February 12th, 2009, 11:17am

Why is it that when I saw the headline I automatically thought "That damn recession!"?

» eyeshield777 on February 12th, 2009, 1:35pm

Lmao recession ROFL
I didn't even think of that, all I could think was "Noooo Witch Hunter! One of my fav series!!"

» robbit on February 12th, 2009, 2:50pm

i love aflame inferno! how can they? and who is gonna pick up the serieses?

» Harukko on February 12th, 2009, 3:32pm

hey're antagonizing against non-first language manga-readers!
Although I never read any of Meep scans, it still makes me mad...
Korean kid, one word for you: You traitor! DX

» thischinksays on February 12th, 2009, 3:50pm

Are you serious? Meep-Scans were doing amazing projects. sad

» christo on February 12th, 2009, 3:55pm

I had thought about posting some big long comment, but now I just don't care. I'm sad Meep is gone, they did good work that I enjoyed and they seemed to be pretty nice guys. I'm also upset that Aflame Inferno has supposedly been licensed since May of last year, yet we haven't seen a thing from Tokyopop.

One thing I just want to say is that not everybody who reads manga online is a dick and just leeching so they don't have to pay for anything. Every month, I get a package from Japan that has issues of Comic Alive and morning2 (I also recently added good! afternoon to my subscriptions). Why? Because I want to support those magazines, the manga they run, and the mangaka they publish. Every time a new volume of Black Lagoon, Claymore or Gantz comes out in the US, I buy it. I've already read these manga online, but I want to support them, and see them continue getting published in English. I'd love it if the English releases actually caught up to the Japanese ones so that I could read the hardcopy instead of viewing scanlations. But until that time, I'll still read scanlations. I also have a bunch of tankoubons on my shelves of series that I enjoyed the scanlatons of, despite the fact that I read very little Japanese and can understand maybe a few words in the actual tank. If you enjoy a manga, I suggest you do the same thing. Buy the tanks off or just go to your local bookstore and buy the licensed series in your country when it comes out.

I guess that was a long comment, but I just wanted to say it. Not everyone is a cheapskate who's trying to get everything for free.

Also, I'll be very sorry if ShoujoMagic closes. They've done some great projects, but I understand the predicament they are in. If I was a better editor or if I knew more Japanese, I would apply to help, but my editing sucks and my Japanese is non-existent. All I can do is encourage people to help them.

» darkreaper on February 12th, 2009, 9:48pm

christo the same..i buy my favs mangas only though >.< ...but meep scan ppl worked hard translating those things...and ya konw some complanies even copy from translators >.> also meep scns were doing nonlisenced projects as well ....they didnt need to go far as to kill the site... damn bastards (srry for language, only way to explain)

» Otakkun on February 13th, 2009, 5:29am

Clap, clap, clap. Good for you. The world needs more of you to keep being the nice place it is.

Having said that, I couldn't care less. If you want me to buy something, come and sell it HERE. If not, its game for everyone. Welcome to the real world.

» pearlized on February 12th, 2009, 5:30pm

ahhh i hope shoujomagic stays alive sad

» Soli on February 12th, 2009, 9:35pm

You and me both love.

» garygantenk on February 12th, 2009, 9:43pm

Better safe than sorry. Bye bye meep, I really enjoyed your scanlations while it lasts, and good luck for your future endeavours biggrin

p.s. I don't really demand it, but underground releases would be nice XP

» crystalsouls on February 19th, 2009, 12:18pm

I hope nobody actually got named in the C & D. I could see lawyers filing suits against ISP's to get scanslator's names in the near future. People are talking about RSS, but what about IRC? As far as I know that's still more or less unpoliceable.
As for immortal regis, isn't it on its last volume scanslation wise?

» melon-ramune-freak on May 1st, 2009, 10:45am

I really like Meep-scans and ShojoMagic ;-;
