New Poll - Best Josei
Last of the "Best" polls. Next week is onto our regular programming~
For the josei lovers, check out all our suggestions here:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=13990

The only interesting fact I can think of right now is that out of the top 5, I've only read Nodame Cantabile. In fact, I also fansubbed the Paris arc of the series. Bonus points if you know which fansub group I'm in =P

Here are the 5 runner-ups (in this order)
Honey and Clover
Gokusen
Ashita no Ousama
Omae ga Sekai wo Kowashitai nara
7 Seeds

Next week, I will be posting a little Excel chart of all the series that were suggested and their rankings.

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Best Seinen
Choices:
xxxHoLic - votes: 3763 (34.6%)
Berserk - votes: 3099 (28.5%)
Yotsubato! - votes: 1609 (14.8%)
Mushishi - votes: 1215 (11.2%)
Vagabond - votes: 1180 (10.9%)
There were 10866 total votes.
The poll ended: September 19th 2009

I have a feeling there will be some unhappy people with these results. Just realize that if you piss me off too much, I'll take some action and ban you.

Nodame ftw.
Kimi wa Pet as 2nd.

-shakes head and seinen poll-

*shakes head at Seinen poll as well*

I voted for Usagi Drop myself, yay~
I hope it beats Midnight Secretary!

thread

I hope everything beats Midnight Secretary.
I think I'm going to go with Nodame but all of them are great series (minus the one I mentioned first).

Gyabo~

thread

» Toto on September 19th, 2009, 11:18am

But right now... it looks like it's coming in second; although, Usagi Drop still has at chance beating it.

thread

» StarlightDreams on September 19th, 2009, 11:31am

Midnight Secretary fangirls do not know true Josei manga.
>.>
MS is just a smutty shoujo manga with instead of a high school girl, it's a secretary that looks like one and acts like one.

thread

» NightSwan on September 19th, 2009, 11:44am

I second it.
Go Nodame!!

thread

» kawaiiairbender on September 19th, 2009, 1:18pm

same here, midnight secretary... seriously D:

I voted for Paradise Kiss because I like fashion..:x
But I'll try the others on the list

thread

I voted for usagi drop as well. If you read any other series from that top 5, lamb, Usagi Drop is probably most enjoyable.

thread

» BaeSooky on September 19th, 2009, 10:29am

Gotwoot.

Was hard choosing between Usagi Drop and Nodame Cantabile. ;___; But chose the latter in the end~ <3

Ohh, and I want my bonus points for guessing that right. : D

thread

Arr! I was goin' to cast my vote to Usagi Drop, but I had t' vote for that funny lass of nodame.

thread

» furiouspuppet on September 19th, 2009, 10:35am

Wow, I've never read any of the five choices or runner ups, but hey that's a good thing finding more manga. I am disappointed that there won't be a Yuri/Shoujo-ai and Yaoi/Shounen-ai poll, but meh.

thread

» StarlightDreams on September 19th, 2009, 10:40am

Well.
Not everyone reads Yuri/Yaoi/ShounenAi/ShoujoAi.
So really, there wouldn't be a point for voting and the poll would be bias to the readers and the non-readers.

thread

» base_coat on September 19th, 2009, 11:54am

Maybe the poll could take place within the yaoi/yuri forum? I don't think that's a bad idea at all.

thread

» furiouspuppet on September 19th, 2009, 8:29pm

Um not everyone reads Shounen, Seinen, Shoujo or Josei in various combos either. I wasn't complaining or shaking my tiny fist of anger at Lamb for not doing them, I was just saying I was disappointed. And honestly with the numerous published Yaoi imprints in the US market alone it's not like it's a tiny market with only three fans sitting in a darkened room with a flashlight...

Oh wait, that's just me. bigrazz

It was a simple statement that I didn't expect a response to because basically it's a "too bad for you, not happening" thing, but your reasoning for why it won't happen made me raise an eyebrow because it can be turned right around.

Besides which these are arbitrary polls being done on a first series submitted in a limited time frame and then most votes from those series are going to be in the voting category. There will already be a bias towards only a small percentage because only a small number of frequent users will submit whereas many more will vote and then make it a point to complain when X series didn't make it into the poll.

thread

» tins on September 19th, 2009, 12:41pm

well, not everyone reads josei and seinen too o_o

thread

» StarlightDreams on September 19th, 2009, 12:49pm

But the majority does.
Those four are the four main demographics of manga.
Shoujo, Josei, Seinen, and Shounen.

thread

» ayashe on September 19th, 2009, 2:58pm

No, the majority doesn't. Just because someone reads manga doesn't mean they read every group. Not everyone reads Shoujo, not everyone reads Shounen, not everyone reads Josei, and not everyone reads Seinen. By your logic all these polls are biased against them. I for one tend to stay away from Shoujo in particular. Does that make the Shoujo poll biased against me, and others like me that don't read Shoujo? No. Yaoi and Yuri are just as popular as the others. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean no one else can't, and it doesn't make things that are about them biased against you. Don't lump everyone in together with words like "everyone" and "majority" based on your beliefs. If being a moderator means you can decide whether or not certain polls occur, fine, but at least acknowledge it's for your own reasons and not everyone elses. "Because no everyone reads them" doesn't stand up logic wise.

thread

» x0mbiec0rp on September 19th, 2009, 3:28pm

Says the person who lumped all the previous statements together.

thread

» StarlightDreams on September 19th, 2009, 3:54pm

Did I say I didn't like them?
And that I don't want a poll about it because I don't like them?
No, I didn't. That's just you making your own assumptions. My beliefs? I know for a fact that most of the people who come to this website read one of those four major demographics. I didn't say that they read all of them. Get your facts straight before you start trying to argue. I'm only a forum moderator, I don't handle these things. I didn't say no one reads them either.
Don't start twisting my words to get your point across. That's my opinion as to WHY we aren't have those polls. If you want the actual reason why, go PM lambchopsil instead of replying to me about how you think I'm wrong, my logic is wrong, and my reasoning is wrong.

Good bye. I won't even bother to reply to you again.

thread

» Toto on September 19th, 2009, 11:34am

I'm glad that you're going to have all of the recommended series in a nice little package for all to see. Heck, when I read that you were going to do it, the little mathematical/statistics nerd inside me jumped for joy.

Oh, I have a question about it though... will you also add how the top five series in each category did in the recommendations, leave them out, or add them as how they did in the poll? I ask because it's just a little interesting to and a bit curious of me how you'd chose to portray those lucky and most popular series.

thread

» nodamen on September 19th, 2009, 11:36am

Usagi Drop is losing votes just because people have to choose between that and Nodame. >_<

Double aww... Honey and Clover didn't make it to the Top 5...

thread

» base_coat on September 19th, 2009, 11:58am

I can't believe even ParaKiss is way behind Midnight Secretary. It's like there are no other josei that's worth to be in the poll? O_o Really this few people have read good josei on this site?

thread

» Odette on September 20th, 2009, 5:14pm

My theory is that the people who would have voted for Paradise Kiss (or Usagi Drop or Kimi wa Pet) noticed that Midnight Secretary might win, became horrified, and threw their support behind Nodame Cantabile. Or at least I did.

thread

» rianna2008 on September 19th, 2009, 12:47pm

I wish there is a option for "none of the above" ....there are better josei series out there........

thread

» riney25 on September 19th, 2009, 1:05pm

If we did that, then we'd probably never get the "best" which of course just really means the most popular.

You should have voted for what you believed to be the top 5 josei when you had the chance.

thread

» kawaiiairbender on September 19th, 2009, 1:16pm

I'm not sure what to vote for Nodame or Usagi Drop. and oh you helped sub Nodame in Paris. <333 oh wait when I was thinking Nodame in Paris = Nodame Special in Europe. oh well still kudos for you.

as for the runners up 7 seeds is amazing (and I think it's better than everything listed) <3

thread

» Highway-STAR on September 19th, 2009, 1:18pm

Mushishi score second-lowest? Jeez. I guess I have the legions of Clamp fans to thank for that.
And seriously, Berserk is madly overrated.

thread

» kana503 on September 19th, 2009, 1:38pm

7 Seeds...Vampire Girl... I like those so much, but they were the bottom of the runner-ups. Heptagon and Hyakki Yakoushou didn't even make the runner-up list. Oh well, I guess this is a chance for me to get into josei manga other than the selected few I have read.
It's funny, though, because I had a hard time nominating josei manga because some of my favorites were actually seinen. I never realized.

thread

» PansyWansyLinsy on September 19th, 2009, 1:39pm

Urgh, MS over Paradise Kiss? Midnight Secretary, like someone mentioned, is a walking cliche with no real conflict within the story. It was good for about 2 volumes. Everything else after that was formulaic shoujo, and a mediocre one at that! Nodame is over-rated in my opinion, I've read over 12 volumes and find most of it to be filler. Paradise Kiss by and far!

thread

» EscapingFate on September 19th, 2009, 1:50pm

Midnight Secretary was entertaining when you're just bored---it's doesn't leave a deep impression after finishing the story unlike some of the other series out there.
I think its the first time I found someone who didn't love Nodame to death. I've also felt that some parts were just filler so I eventually dropped the series...maybe i'll pick it up again when it ends

thread

» base_coat on September 19th, 2009, 3:04pm

Paradise Kiss and Usagi Drop FTW. I actually agree with what Pansy said about Nodame. I usually dislike long mangas, no fail. If one wants to be entertained, Yoshihara Yuki is the way to go instead of MS. Even some hentai are better.

thread

» EscapingFate on September 19th, 2009, 1:44pm

I've actually tried out all of the (top 5) manga choices so I can say that this is a tough poll.
many people have actually not read ALL the josei's on the list so the results may not be totally accurate of the majority's tastes.
I'm just sad that some of my favorite mangas of all time are coming in last
kimi wa pet and Parakiss are not doing so well T_T
I did like Midnight Secretary but I personally don't think it can compare to the other joseis that are on the list and the runner ups...

thread

» Odette on September 20th, 2009, 5:33pm

I've tried all five -- actually, all ten. smile Except for Midnight Secretary and Vampire Girl (aka Omae ga Sekai wo Kowashitai nara) -- sheesh, what do I have against vampire mangas wink -- I think that all of the choices have their strengths, and none are overwhelmingly superior to the others.

thread

» elianthos on September 19th, 2009, 2:30pm

About the josei finalists and candidates: urgh, I'd swap H&C with Midnight Secretary. MS has some good moments and decent art most of the time, but... even among guilty pleasure readings in smut-sauce there's much better (namely Chou Yo Hana Yo. Smexy crack *_* with even Gundam references added to the mix ...)
As things are now instead... I'll happily vote for Nodame <3 . Go Megumi&Chiaki go!
Seinen poll:
CLAMP power @_@ . Well, at least among the top 5 seinen there's Mushishi <3 : love the concept, love the mood and evocative art.
Not a big fan of Berserk after the Golden Age+Lost Children arcs ended.
Vagabond... the art and effort are praise-worthy, but the actual content and pacing are not my cup of tea.
Yotsubato: it's on my reading list since forever... must actually try it sooner or later ^^;
I was hoping Historie and Emma could make it up there too, pity :/ .

I have bought all the volumes of Kimi wa Pet, though. (:

thread

» jackblack901 on September 19th, 2009, 6:23pm

There is one problem happens in both seinen and josei poll. The popular manga that can attract both boys and girls default win.
I don't expect a single a girl will vote for Berserk so it lost to xxxholic even though it manages to get nearly 30% vote from boys only
In josei case, Chiaki probably will help Nodame get enough vote from boys to win.
That fact make seinei and josei poll become worthless...

thread

» kawaiiairbender on September 19th, 2009, 6:28pm

there were some girls voting for Beserk....

And Nodame/Usagi drop both have male protags.
Also, not sure if it matters in the end anyway.

thread

» jackblack901 on September 19th, 2009, 6:36pm

yeah Yotsubato! and Usagi Drop is kind of cute and innocent slice of life manga that everybody can enjoy, but somehow it cant help them stand out in the list.

thread

» base_coat on September 19th, 2009, 8:02pm

Actually I was surprised to find that Usagi Drop is more than a cute innocent slice of life manga. The characters are very well-done and surprising. I didn't expect myself to enjoy it much. It's at least better than Midnight Secretary. It's obvious when you have read both. I don't get what makes MS stand out in the list then...

thread

» magnet_dance on September 19th, 2009, 7:00pm

What planet do you come from? I'm quite sure alot of girls voted for Berserk.

thread

» furiouspuppet on September 19th, 2009, 8:19pm

I didn't vote for Berserk and I'm a female, I was too busy voting for Vagabond. I think it's interesting that everyone just jumps the gender assumption to a ridiculous degree. Do I think a lot or possibly even the majority of XXXholic voters were female? Sure. Do I think they ALL were? No, not at all. That's as silly an assumption as saying only boys read shounen and only girls read shoujo.

thread

» base_coat on September 20th, 2009, 8:46pm

Berserk is overrated. There are better seinen action that should have been in the poll. Whichever won, I don't really care. Anything else is better than Berserk.

thread

» Odette on September 20th, 2009, 5:25pm

It also occurred to me that this would happen, but I don't see why a manga appealing to both males and females is a problem. Are you implying that girls lack taste in seinen mangas and vice versa?

Ending the "Best" polls with Josei, huh? No love for the other major genres?

thread

» TK201 on September 19th, 2009, 9:37pm

What other "major genres" do you have in mind? AFAIK, these four are "The Major" genres of manga, be it gender bender, comedy, smut whatever, they all fall to at least one of the four genres.

as for the best seinen poll, I'm a guy, yet I voted for xxxHoLic, why? coz' I have yet to read the others. And I like the works of Clamp.
