In the scanslation world speed trumps all else, and with Mangastream routinely beating SleepyFans by two days or more on the latest Jump issues (and typically having much higher quality scans, watermarks aside) I don't think I'd seen one of their scans in months. It's why Null and Inane gave way to the crappy speedscanners, people who collect and love high-quality work are in the minority compared to those of us who just want the latest updates.

HQ scans are FAR better than speedscans however to most of the average readers there isnt any difference to them. however the people who cant tell have at least 50x the numbers of the people who can tell the difference. my biggest issue with Manga share is they put their credits as page 2 so it is in the middle of the damned chapter (and those watermarks are terrible for archiving series).

Hmm.. No more Crappyfans and their infamously horrible translations. Like when they translated Sasuke's remark about heading to the Kage Summit and "killing the kages", when he only stated he was heading there for the head of the Hokage.

indeed, Mangastream sure has speed and higher quality in some aspects in editing, but the translation's a bit off mmm...

SleepyFans had better translation than IEatManga for Bakuman. For IEatManga, you can obviously see the direct translations from Japanese. Stop dissing them that much.

eh
they were the first for a short while but even then I preferred hbk translated scan to their own (sakura?)

true but in my eyes watermarks = crap quality

Meh, Mangastream was simply doing it faster and did a good job with it. Watermarks are inconsequential to the average reader. As long as someone is covering the series in good time, the group disbanding isn't a problem, and probably a relief for the members of it.

Of course it would have been nice if they could have aimed their talent towards a series that wasn't being scanlated.

hadn't read SF scans in a long while, but last i did, their quality was horrid, their only saving grace was the translation they used. sometimes.

welp, i'm used to shoddy translations (Masuru D. Choceh and Duwang, anyone?), so MS, watermarks aside, is all i need.... till someone offers something better.

Oh, those guys who were slower than MangaStream? Shounen garbage -_-
Still, it does suck to see a scanlator close down. I'm sure they'll be missed, but just not by me.

thread

» jijiey on January 28th, 2011, 8:18am

I used to read their scans few while back when they releases faster than any other groups. Well guess no use continuing when there are other group with speed and quality. I don't know how many times i jumped on other scanlator just because they either close down or dropped series like Naruto.

thread

» pumpupthevolume on January 28th, 2011, 4:26pm

shame they should've released other mangas instead

thread

» Tenji on January 28th, 2011, 5:04pm

I agree, scanlator groups shouldn't compete with each other. After all, the purpose of doing it is still the same with all others.

thread

» T1 on January 29th, 2011, 6:49am

I agree too...work on something else dammit, instead of going emo wink
Lots of great manga to choose from, if you don't know any just get hold of me bigrazz

It's just terrible, seeing you guys talking about a scanlation group like they are a thing.
you are not supposed to judge a group by their speed or quality, but what they brought
to this community.
They trully made us enjoy our share of manga at their time. Thank you for that.

thread

» loosecannon504 on January 28th, 2011, 8:48pm

But you ARE supposed to judge them by their speed and quality. Those are the main factors in deciding whether you want to follow a scanlation group or not.

Anyway, I'm not really sad to see them go, because their translations weren't really that good and were sometimes misleading, like alexdhamp up there mentioned with Sasuke.

» thefolenangel on January 29th, 2011, 4:39am

Ooo STFU....
Nobody can judge, there is only one judge...
SF may have released with bad quality and not perfect TL, but the effort they put into their scans and the heart of the readers they made enjoy speaks for itself. So RIP SF, RIP FH....
You will see one day what will happen when MS monopolizes the scanlation world.
Speaking of MS, let's not talk about their God complex.

thread

not sure why they're quitting, but from what i can read from their site, and feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, it sounds more like it's because they can't seem to catch up....

scanlation is a service that is up for offer. anything that is offered will always be judged, even something as pure as charity. a dollar makes you a scrooge and 100 makes you a savior. sure, you'll get kind souls who're happy with a dollar. unfortunately, not everyone are that easily satisfied.

it's been chanted for years now: speed and quality are what people look for in scanlators, like it or not. and it takes "effort" and "heart" to deliver those, something SF actually lacked. why else would they quit? if it was because of IRL issues or lack of staff, or a disagreement among them, sure, can't blame them. sh** like that happens. but because of speed?

take the "group who's website does not exist" for example; they lack speed, but their quality definitely shows heart and effort, and even more so with their refusal to quit, for nearly 7 goddamn years! and SF? what? can't catch up? they still have the choice to make it up with quality, something MS is weak with especially in the translation dept. and yet, they chose not to. what? SJ titles are not worth it and it's too competitive? there are a 1001 other unscanlated series out there i'm sure myself and others would like to discover and read. just ignore that need to get thousands of fans. a lot of fine groups are still doing ok with a few dozen to a few hundred fans.

tl;dr - as i see it in terms of scanlation; giving up, and refusal to sacrifice speed and work hard for quality instead is no proof of heart and effort.

thread

» T1 on January 29th, 2011, 6:59am

...and I'm the judge!

Anyway MS ruling the scanlation world, I lulz at the great joke you made there XD

I may annoy 75% of the speedscanners...but naruto, bleach and bakuman isn't the whole manga world (it's so far from it)...I refuse to call anyone who do those as the rulers of scanlations world, lol.

Please that's like telling me that watermarks are great -_-;;;; za reason why I normally jump over MS stuff is the watermarks and no dls.

PS: No one got a bigger god complex than me, hence my first line wink

» Uhnnown on January 30th, 2011, 5:21pm

I don't even know how you can ' monopolize the scanlation world'. And as if monopoly's are bad by definition.

MS delivers quality (in terms of redrawing and editing, perhaps not always in TL) and speed. It's not like you have to pay for their services. They too are a bunch of people who do things for free. There are hardly any downsides by reading their work. I don't quite get what your beef is with MS.

thread

» TheLittleE on January 29th, 2011, 12:14pm

They close instead of translating something that 500 other groups aren't already doing.

I read about this on their page, I liked their translations. Sad but it is what it is.
