New Poll - Life Role
This week's poll comes from our member AceBunneh. Imagine that your life was a manga series. What role would you play in it? I'm curious who wouldn't be the main character...

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related):

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Opinion on love triangles
How about more than just 3 sides? - votes: 2831 (19.9%)
Love them! - votes: 2684 (18.8%)
Hate them - votes: 4032 (28.3%)
Don't care - votes: 4091 (28.7%)
Ewww, no romance at all - votes: 601 (4.2%)
There were 14239 total votes.
The poll ended: May 19th 2012

So much hate... I guess that's what happens with the tried and true? Or maybe it's just too much "tried" and not enough "true"

Antagonist seems like it would be the most fun. A successful antagonist would be better. I would probably be a cunning, manipulative one that thought of life as a game. But i would be joking even til my dying breath and point out the stupid things the protagonist does. Id rather not die though. laugh

» Syphilis on May 19th, 2012, 7:56am

I'd have to be the main character. I mean, come on.

» maine12329 on May 19th, 2012, 8:04am

New poll reminds me of Medaka Box biggrin

» TaoPaiPai on May 19th, 2012, 8:17am

someone kind of have to be the badguy to make it a great story

and i could just let my hate flow lol
kill everyone i want
do exactly as i want

i kind of have to be taken down in the end
lets hope its a shounen and that the protagonist thinks its gonna be ok after they just beat me
[not even prison...i just killed 400 000 000 million ppl but now i see the light]

after my wounds heal
im gonna be right back exterminating the human race.

» sarah-eats-cupcakes on May 19th, 2012, 8:27am

what a weird poll....
lets see...
this is kinda tough
i'd prefer love interest i guess...because love interests are always glorified in manga and hey noone said i'd actually have to end up with the main character bigrazz

» TheGirlWhoDidThat on May 19th, 2012, 8:46am

Main character obviously. Unless it was something like tragedy where all my friends would die, in which case I would just rather be the narrator.

» Toto on May 19th, 2012, 8:51am

It makes me wonder what kind of stories you guys read sometimes. Protagonists don't have to be good guys... or even the traditional figure one normally finds as the main character.

In Wolfsmund, the side characters are the main focus, whether they are "good" or "evil".
God's Child is a right old bastard but the protagonist none-the-less.
Oyasumi Punpun's MC is more of a side character.
Same with Seigi no Mikata.
And the hikikomori in Watching TV All the Time Makes You Stupid is more of a side character, but she is the protagonist of the series.

It's all about perspective. You can be in any series with any ending. Well, it all depends on what part of your life is being "translated" into a series, 'cause all series are really gonna end the same. In a fluffly series, you could be the protag, but in a dark, depressing, gritty, noir series... you are the fodder (minor character) for the Protagonist/Antagonist.

Have fun thinking that last sentence over again.

» kaloo on May 19th, 2012, 8:55am

Terrible things happen to Protagonists, their Best friends, their Love Interests and the Bad Guy. Supporting, Minor, and Narrator are much safer.

» yuno19 on May 19th, 2012, 9:34am

» naikan on May 19th, 2012, 1:41pm

Unless it's a horror manga...

» Banarok on May 20th, 2012, 1:39pm

the narrator is still pretty safe. . . . (hopefully)

» Dionaea on May 22nd, 2012, 11:26am

This is the reason I went for: Supporting Character (recurring appearances) biggrin

» marshy03 on May 19th, 2012, 8:56am

Antagonist i guess. seems more interesting than being the main protagonist.

» aiceedeebee on May 19th, 2012, 8:57am

ah... I want to be one of the supporting characters xD Weird, eh? I just find most of those characters really funny biggrin

» MewMan on May 19th, 2012, 9:16am

stalking and giving over the top comments sound fun XD

» Tenshinchigi on May 19th, 2012, 9:21am

I'd want to be a minor character, I mean, have you ever seen a main character this isn't busy? How can I spend all day reading manga and watching TV if I'm being hunted down by demons, saving the world, being harassed by a harem of women, studying for tests, dumped in an alternate reality, and the world is ending.

seriously, screw you people, I just want to see The Avengers.

» tactics on May 19th, 2012, 9:39am

Protagonist, but only because it looks like something different happens everyday (most of the time. Lets forget about the tragedy and horror manga too XD). I think it'd be interesting. I lead a very boring, bog standard life, so yeah I think being a protagonist would be...well certainly busy XD

» LilyMinjee on May 19th, 2012, 12:36pm

i chose the best friend of the main character...
at first i want to choose the main protagonist but then i suddenly realize that not all good things happen to the main protagonist.. therefore, i prefer to stand aside them and watch the story go on..

» AliceinAmestris on May 19th, 2012, 12:40pm

They didn't give an option for what I want to be. So I choose antagonist. I think it could be interesting and no way are you bogged down my responsibilities and such.

But what I want to be is the main antagonist that later on teams up with the hero and turns into a potential love interest but in no way turns weak and helpless.

» BlackOrion on May 19th, 2012, 12:47pm

Narrator (when not a character in the story)

Usually that kind of character is a pretty bad-ass one, that either know a lot or learned a lot during the history he is narrating. Anyway i like to be the one who watch and judge.

» dreamer00013 on May 19th, 2012, 1:36pm

Oh come on guys... isn't it obvious I want to be the evil, evil villain? biggrin (It's more interesting ^^)

» Cherelle Ashlee on May 19th, 2012, 2:36pm

Protagonist of course! Mostly because in the manga that I read, the main focus is on the protagonist and also because their story is pretty much unwritten. My second option would have been best friend/ love interest, but they usually get put on the back burner in most of the manga I read..

» Joentjuh on May 19th, 2012, 2:48pm

euh... "if your life was a manga", that would always make you the protagonist.
I'm just going to assume the question was badly phrased.

Indeed what I think. Maybe it should phrased as 'what kind of protagonist/character would you prefer'...
Whatever, I choose narrator for this. Maybe something like Touge in Adolf ni Tsugu or the girl in Zekkyou Gakkyuu

Well, I guess you could see it that way but idk.. Maybe I should of said if reality was more like a manga or something, but I'm still not sure. To be fair I wrote quite a few polls in succession and just posted them all at once..

Still, I remain that you wouldn't have to be the main character because there's quite a few manga and stories where the protagonist isn't the focus of the story.. It really depends on the writing style used and the genre..

Any who, I guess I should answer my own poll, although I don't think I will pick an actual choice because I can see the benefits and downfalls of all of the choices depending on the manga and its genre, but I think I'd stick with a Supporting Character or Narrator. Any how, I've other things to do.. ^-^;;

One more thing though, I'm glad for those who enjoyed this poll. I'm sorry that the choices didn't cover everything, but if I added all the possible plot twists, character development, and other such things then there'd be hundreds of choices, from antagonist later turned friend to former love interest fading into a background character, to easter egg type characters who appear all of the time but have no actual impact on the story and may be the main focus of a side story.. That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it. >.>;

» forgottenone666 on May 19th, 2012, 3:42pm

I went with love interest. I think it would be cool to have someone interested in me. Although I would definitely be the typical oblivious love interest. sad

» myrt on May 19th, 2012, 3:55pm

Minor Character!

I'd rather be rarely seen and in the background. =)

» Ibleda on May 19th, 2012, 4:18pm

Best friend of main character.

Well... I kinda went back and forth between best friend and protagonist but... main reason is most the times I hate the protagonists' personality. And most the times their lives are boring... and cliched. I prefer the best friend role, most the times they end up being my fav chars too.

» elementalblood on May 19th, 2012, 8:05pm

Definitely the antagonist! smile

I mean, why not make it my life's goal to annoy the protagonist to death? I'd love the be the cunning, ruthless and creative opposition. Life isn't fun if you aren't a thorn in someone's side ^_^ Plus if I'm the antagonist, I can kill people without the whole "conscience" thing getting in the way! *Evil laughter*

I don't think I'd ever want to get on your bad side. laugh

Hopefully I wouldn't end up as a character in your manga. eyes

» ashi on May 20th, 2012, 12:02am

I chose best friend, but in a manga where the best friend has its own story going on... like in shounen I would be Zoro, Tao from Noblesse or Rivaille from Shingeki no Kyojin. Or shoujo I would be Ryu from "Kimi ni Todoke"

Oh crap! I guess that if my life were a manga I would be a guy no ... BUT I would be a silent badass cool really good at something guy biggrin

» Myuym on May 20th, 2012, 8:13am

When you choose to be the protag, would you also change into a hotheaded guy who can overcome everything by determination and willpower? That would be boring.

And what kind of manga, that is also important, I wouldn't want to be a side character in a horror manga.

And to be honest I doubt I would want my live to be a manga, pretty sure it would be axed in no time at all sad

» holanio on May 20th, 2012, 3:13pm

I wanna be the troll supporting character that just creeps around and observes the drama.
And occasionally offer incredibly life-changing advice that shines an epiphany over the main characters.
I could be anything, and have no responsibility to hold up to those standards at all.

» Nirhtuc on May 21st, 2012, 12:02am

Lol @ this week's poll. I'm sure the reality is that we're all protagonists in the um... story of our lives?! But of course, we may prefer to be minor characters or whatever... and wth?! People knowingly want to be villains in their stories?! They do have interesting roles to play though! laugh

» felix_the_beast on May 21st, 2012, 5:37am

Narrator of course. I want to stay alive to tell the story while making fun of the starring roles...

» 0oKat~0 on May 21st, 2012, 7:18am

Protagonist please! biggrin At least their lives are never boring.

Edit: Opps. I didn't mean to reply to your post. Lol.

» otakuness on May 21st, 2012, 10:10am

well it is MY story so i definitely want to be the hero. protagonist it is. biggrin

» cjchan on May 21st, 2012, 3:15pm

I would be someone with "Deus Ex Machina" power and stir things up for my own fun.

» tsubasa22 on May 21st, 2012, 8:36pm

Narrator~ who doesn't want to be the almight, know-it-all in the story?

» Mamsmilk on May 22nd, 2012, 12:12pm

Not a bad poll.

Though I find it hard to choose a role, as it completely depends what kind of themes the said story handles. My role could be anything, depending on the genre. My life would be boring to see if one was expecting a lot of action. Then I would be a supporting character, the guy who runs that weirdass site and bots at best. If the main theme would be something with dramatic and psychological undertones, then I would drift towards the main character. I'm probably overanalysing the whole question altogether, but that just further proves my point. Depending how deep we go, my role can be anything besides narrator as I am not all that observant of other people when there is no benefit. Besides, we can never know as much as the narrator, even in hindsight, as we only get to see things from one perspective. I can't really pick one so I'd have to say, one of the prime characters in an interlocked web of stories. Prime due to my story having less generic events than many of the other characters who play a part in the monolith, events that are unique in every aspect and nothing alike to the events I am not part of. While one can say that all events in different lives are unique, it is not completely so. They're like the same play by different actors. What I speak of are two different plays. While there are stories that share much in common with mine, they are scarcely linked to this story, merely happening on the same planet on the same time or far apart. My view is not unique globally, neither my role, but for this story it is.

» mizaki2100 on May 23rd, 2012, 9:09pm

I'd love to be the main character's best friend. Isn't it so, that usually, the best friend is the person the protagonist consults to when they have a problem (yes, I'm talking about romantic stories). Knowing what's going to happen would be half as fun as hearing and knowing the story bit by bit from the main char's pov. I'd like to be on edge from their story. Plus, I'd like to be on the light, not as much as the main but not as little as some other characters. smile

If some action manga, I think I'd go for the narrator. Just because I don't want to go through all the fight scenes just to get to know the story.

If pure gag story, I'd be thrilled to be the main character because they're usually awe~some (Barney Stinson, hah).

» PrincessVera on May 24th, 2012, 11:33am

I picked "Best Friend" because that's what I'd most likely be in real life... my second choice would be "narrator," because I write for a living in real life, too. How about the best friend who's the narrator, like in The Great Gatsby?

» eternia on May 25th, 2012, 8:34pm

Duh. Protagonists get the harem.
Protagonists' best friends are just comic relief.

» LawX on May 25th, 2012, 10:44pm

Choosing to be the narrator is too safe. I'd prefer to be the protagonist, plus I already have an arch-nemesis.

» matsuross on May 28th, 2012, 3:41pm

i did vote for antagonist.....
angst, dark side my cup of tea.... biggrin
