New Poll - Starting Age
This week's poll by rallwka is about the age you started reading manga. As long as you remember, this one should be easy!

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)

Previous Poll Results:
Question: If a publisher were to adopt a model where you pay a monthly subscription (say ~$10 USD) in order to read their entire library of translated manga via a digital device, would you subscribe?
Yes - votes: 6400 (57.6%)
No - votes: 4713 (42.4%)
There were 11113 total votes.
The poll ended: March 15th 2013

There's so many factors associated with this (like how large the library of series would be), so don't expect this poll to be a market analysis of any sort. In other news, JManga is closing its retail and viewing services

I think I was around 5-6 at the time I read my first manga, but I didn't really get into it until I started high school.

» pyonk on March 16th, 2013, 1:59am

I was around 2nd - 3rd grade of elementary school when I bought my first manga: Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura. I guess I was 8 y.o that time..

» Caedis on March 16th, 2013, 2:04am

I read like 3 pages of Love Hina (my brothers) not knowin it was manga when I was like 8 or 9
And then read my first manga when I was 11

» CatzCradle on March 16th, 2013, 2:53am

I think I was about grade 6 when I accidentally picked up an issue of Shounen Jump at my local supermarket and the rest is history. laugh

» deadphoenix on March 16th, 2013, 3:58am

Does this include anime?
I've started with Dragonball and Pokémon around the age of 10 or 11.
But for manga it took some time until I was around 18-19 (we don't have much manga in my country, it took some time until I found it on the Internetz). wink

» Dionaea on March 18th, 2013, 2:24am

Same here, I've been into cartoons & anime for as long as I can remember (anything from Tom & Jerry to Marvel and anime), but manga are hard to come by here, so my first encounter was on the internet. Unless Disney's Witch magazine counts as manga o.o

» popske on March 16th, 2013, 4:40am

The first manga i bought was a Naruto volume 26, my friend had informed me about naruto and i saw it in a shop randomly i was 13-15, of course it was not in english and i just looked at the pictures wondering what the hell was going on. I only really started getting into manga last year now im 21 lol biggrin

» Oriolidae on March 16th, 2013, 4:45am

I started with pokemon (series and gameboy games) when I was 8-9 years old, but in my opinion that doesn't count, as I wasn't aware of it being anime.

I bought my first 3 manga volumes when I was around 13 years old; One Piece, D.N. Angel and Ranma 1/2. Within a week I'd bought another ten volumes, and then I was hooked.

» tactics on March 16th, 2013, 5:03am

I was 14 I think. I had just started year 10 at the time, so I was 14 going on 15.
I remember it well. I stumbled across a random manga, found a link to OneManga on that site and I've never looked back since.

» tsuto on March 16th, 2013, 5:16am

After 18, I think, don't exactly remember anymore laugh

» kawaiiairbender on March 16th, 2013, 6:41am

10 years ago!!! I was 14 and it was the summer before I entered 10th grade. There was a small manga section next to the YA books in B&N and I picked one up. I can't remember the first one but it may have been Kare Kano. I remember reading Kare Kano and Peach Girl that summer smile Neither which i have finished mind you. laugh

» Lanz16 on March 16th, 2013, 6:50am

The first time I read manga when I was 12 years old and Ranma 1/2 was my first manga.

» Kurapica on March 16th, 2013, 7:06am

Nice poll. Started reading manga in 2001 or so. Was 15 or 16 then.

» That3rdGuy on March 16th, 2013, 7:23am

Hmmm..... if you count Dragon Ball, I was maybe 14. It's the only manga I've ever owned. I got about 15 chapters or so. Then I didn't read any for quit some time. Didn't start reading pirated manga until about 19-ish. I've been sitting here ever since. It's been 6 yrs. cry

» ebisu on March 16th, 2013, 7:40am

With 7/8 years, Dragon Ball and Fly (Dai no daiboken) (and other non-mangas)

» LilyNanami on March 16th, 2013, 7:56am

I started in 2008 with Marmalade Boy, a friend of mine had bought it, back then when they were really cheap. We were 14 years old

» CheshireCaine on March 16th, 2013, 9:12am

I started in year 6 at the age of 10, after learning that Naruto wasn't just on TV!
Then I think I read Shaman King immediately after with the same mindset. laugh

» vietangelix on March 16th, 2013, 9:53am

I began reading manga when I started 6th grade smile I didn't know what manga was until this girl found some at the library and showed me. So my first manga was called Ultra Maniac and I got addicted right there, haha.

» geowrian on March 16th, 2013, 10:54am

While this is an interesting question, I would like to see a question about how long ago somebody started reading manga. For instance, if the majority of the site's users are <=18 years old, then the vast majority of first time manga experiences is going to when people were <=18 years old. I'd like to see if new people are starting to pickup manga recently (and if there were some "manga boom"), or if the majority of users are long-time readers and if new users aren't coming into the genre. That will likely tell a good picture of what to expect in the future.

» BlackOrion on March 16th, 2013, 11:39am

I got my first Manga when i was 9 and i still have it in good condition. biggrin

» LilyMinjee on March 16th, 2013, 12:35pm

I started reading manga when I was really young. But at that time, i didn't know it was manga. I just thought of it as normal comics with nice art. Plus, I only read it when I have nothing to do. Then, I stopped reading it b'coz I didn't find it giving me any benefits and it was also a waste of time.

But, when I was 15, I started to read it again and this time, I went GAGA for it. It is my biggest hobby that I ever had in my life. So, I put 14-18 as my option because that was the time when I was seriously reading manga.

» baka_hyuga on March 16th, 2013, 8:39pm

I first read manga at 5 or 6 years old,but start buy manga at 2nd years middle school it was around 14-15 years old

» coconut on March 17th, 2013, 1:54am

Duude, I remember I started reading manga during 5th or 6th grade!!
The boys from my class brought in Shonen Jump when it first came out and I was hooked!
Not only that, I think my first manga series might have been Initial D? Again, I remember the boys bringing it in and I had to like beg this one guy to let me read the next volume lol. I was already an addict then and still is 10 years later.
First exposure though? Probably Sailor Moon or Doreamon or Pokemon? Then there was that Adult Swim on Cartoon Network back in the days... mmm good times.

» 狂気 on March 17th, 2013, 2:19am

The descriptions suck. Which countries have middle school from 10 to 14? Not very many, I imagine. And 22 to 30 a young adult? I'd say at latest when you get to 22 and over you can drop the "young" off.

As for the question: pretty much from when I learned to read, so the first answer.

» connerity on March 17th, 2013, 2:54am

In 6th or 7th grade.
The Dragonball anime was very popular among the boys of our class and before long, we were buying and exchanging the manga volumes until we had all of them.

» BurningFish on March 17th, 2013, 10:20am

It all started with One Piece. <3 I guess it was fifth grade, I got it from my friends, as I can remember.

anime started earlier, somewhere in primary school with Pokemon and One Piece (and Yu-Gi-Oh :rolleyessmile , as I always complain there's not that much different manga or anime in my country but it's getting better.

» Smillo on March 17th, 2013, 11:28am

I startet reading manga when i was 18, i was at a friends home, was drunk, had nothing to do and thus started reading the manga i saw in one of the shelves, this was a mistake, because it started my addiction bigrazz

» Rukia168 on March 17th, 2013, 12:32pm

» Kina92 on March 17th, 2013, 3:20pm

I remember it like it was just yesterday. I was eleven, fresh into middle school and no real friends to speak of. Then a girl named Rebecca handed me the first volume of Fruits Basket. It was love at first sight. I've been an avid manga reader ever since. biggrin

» jake174 on March 17th, 2013, 3:30pm

I think I was maybe 20, didn't really get into reading manga until after highschool for sure. Watched anime since I was a kid but when I finally read a chapter, (i think onepiece, so i could skip all the bs in the arch and find out what happens now!), i saw how great they are.

» iceberry on March 17th, 2013, 11:10pm

I started when I was 11 years with Shugo Chara because my friend recommended it (she started reading manga about half a year earlier). For a while I liked only Shugo Chara and tought that I would never find a better. A while after that I found the anime and started watching it. After I had watched it I accidentaly found Tokyo mew mew. That is when I realized that there are many similar and better animes and mangas ^_^
(Sorry!!! my english is not that good!!! >_<)

» Aijin-of-Iwa on March 18th, 2013, 7:18am

I watched Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited away" when I was seven and had a giant poster of it in my room. Later, when I was nine, I moved to Spain, meaning there was Doraemon on TV. I also loved Inuyasha and a few other anime when I was 11-12, but the first manga I ever picked up (also of Inuyasha) was when I was 11. I sticked to Rumiko Takahashi's work until, one day when I went to buy the next number, the manga shop owner told me he didn't have it and recomended Naruto. That's where it all started...

I watched both spirited away and howls moving castle, but I didn't know it was anime at the time. I was 7 or 8 at the time. I actually started manga at 13. biggrin

» ColorlessHuman on March 18th, 2013, 8:44am

seems like most ppl start reading from their highschool days.

» SilentAnime on March 18th, 2013, 9:01am

Not really. If you're american, probably (no hard feelings, okay? biggrin ). But in my case, it isn't. I learned how to read at age 4 or 5 with Doraemon as one of my first books. Since then I'm stuck with manga as I enjoyed reading it.

» ColorlessHuman on March 18th, 2013, 9:12am

lol. no. I'm not an American. I got exposed to manga 3 years back when I was 15.

» zodac on March 18th, 2013, 1:15pm

I was 13 when I started reading. Way back in 2002 when manga first really started getting big in the states. I remember my friend bringing in the first issue of the American version of Shonen Jump, and my mind being blown over the fact there were "anime comics." The same friend also quickly exposed me to the scanlation community. Man, I miss Toriyama's World and SnoopyCool....

» lily_kitty15 on March 19th, 2013, 3:51am

Looking over the other comments and seeing the ages... Man, it makes me feel old. I started reading manga at age 25.

» ReaderM on March 22nd, 2013, 6:42am

Haha, know the feeling.I was reading the comments and I was like, wow I didn't start reading manga till I was in college. Been reading American comics since I was young yes and started watching anime in high school but didn't pick up manga till college when I was getting tired at how slow the pacing was in Naruto and Bleach anime and found out there was a source they came from that was way ahead.
