New Poll - Pursuing Romance
This week's poll is from FormX, who apparently took it from EveTaku... But in any case, of the choices given, which would you rather see the main character of a romance series pursue? Not an exhaustive list and some of the choices sort of overlap, but oh well. Just for fun!

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: How much time per week do you spend on manga and anime related activities (reading, watching, discussing, cosplay, fan fics, drawing, conventions, etc)?
Choices:
Less than 2 hours - votes: 904 (7.9%)
2-5 hours - votes: 1936 (16.9%)
5-10 hours - votes: 1939 (16.9%)
10-20 hours - votes: 2140 (18.7%)
20-30 hours - votes: 1435 (12.5%)
30-40 hours - votes: 899 (7.9%)
40+ hours - votes: 2188 (19.1%)
There were 11441 total votes.
The poll ended: January 18th 2014

Maybe I should have split the upper tier even more. My initial reasoning was because 40 hours is the typical work week for many people. I guess you would spend more time with a hobby than a job. Or perhaps all those people don't have jobs or are students...

Could there be a forbidden love interest? (or something along those lines) If not I'll go vote for Someone a lot older.

Oh great it was added.

I love the MC pursuing a forbidden love interest. A family member's lover, a teacher, family member, kidnapper, someone who already is dating someone, etc. That would be my top preference.
hmmm I see teacher and student have been added, but I would still enjoy MC pursuing someone already in a relationship.

I chose forbidden love interest(incest), isn’t it the same as little/elder sibling??

thread

I think they meant other kinds of forbidden relationships (like Romeo and Juliet type ones).

thread

» NightSwan on January 18th, 2014, 2:09am

Doesn't have to be.
Same sex romances are often called "forbidden" as well. ;p

In most cases, I'd prefer to see the heroine chase some girl, rather than some boring guy.
Other than that... I don't know? Someone who fits the character or at least makes an interesting story.
That's why I've given up on school life shoujo, since new or creative dynamics seldom happen.

To be perfectly honest, I'd like to see the character do other things beside pursuing romantic interests.

thread

» BaeSooky on January 18th, 2014, 12:31pm

Yeah, I mean incest is a form of forbidden love so is a teacher-student relationship, if it was going to be separate might as well have had "same sex" as an option lol.

» Nirhtuc on January 18th, 2014, 2:06am

Haha nice poll! TBH, I like all of these equally well (except for the animal one and the inanimate object one...), but picked the childhood friend, because that kind of relationship could get very complex and interesting, but also have a more realistic possibility of a happy ending (compared to forbidden relationships etc.).

thread

» dalek on January 18th, 2014, 2:19am

Since I love romance, that was a really hard choice for me. dead I love all of them, childhood friend, a lot older/a lot younger, teacher and student, same age, forbidden love... it is haaaaard!!

I voted "childhood friend", because since I like cute mangas, a love story about long-term friends is always good to read (I love how awkward people are in the beginning of a relationship...) and also the idea of what people call "friendzone", I like how the main character tries to get the attention of another person that only see her/him as a friend.

But I think I like this one more because there are more mangas about it, I have a hard time finding good mangas with a lot older guy x younger girl (like Miman Renai) or forbidden love (like Emma), so I probably love childhood friend more because a lot of shoujos use that romance-line. biggrin

You know for some reason when I read those options I thought some other person's older/younger sibling, not the MC, lol.

Quote from Nirhtuc

Forbidden can extent to a lot of things, and when I suggested it as an option, my main thought was a relationship deemed bad to society. Which I guess could extent to what you were saying.

Like lambchopsil said some of the choices sort of overlap. Which is why leaving a comment to explain why you picked what helps. (ex. You could explain which forbidden you meant)

Sidenote- Nirhtuc double posting is not allowed.
If you want to reply to someone you could just use the quotes and have your reply after the quotes.
(works great when you want to reply to more than one person in a single posting).

Double posting is fine in the News forum since the threaded view relies on if you're quoting or replying to other posts.

Wow, great poll this time. Can't really decide, I'm fine with anything that makes a good story. In a harem setting though, I usually prefer if the mc goes for the one he set his eyes on first. It's annoying to see if he can't make up his mind.

Would vote for childhood friend, if I was looking for sweet romance. What about ghosts or other supernatural beings (like in Tasogare Otome X Amnesia) ? Should've merged the supernatural stuff together.

thread

» Yuukii_Cross on January 18th, 2014, 2:59am

For me it was a hard decision to make, not because I root for all types, but because the love interest I root for is based on a different criteria. For me, the one I would like her to end up with is the least expected one, the one you just know won't be chosen in the end... And it depends from manga to manga fi this person is a childhood friend, an older stepbrother, a youger guy etc. I hope you get what I'm saying.
I voted for the childhood friend, because he is usually the one that ends up sufering (or finds a new love, best case scenario). But like I said above, this depends greatly on the manga itself, so my choice is more of a coincidence than a real opinion.
This aside, if I look at those types just as simple types, then I go with the Senpai. I love it when there is a not-too-big age gap between them.. you know, the guy is older, let's say 1-2-3 years older, but the relationship is still believable. I never quite understood why a 30-year old guy (male, company director or whatever else) who is NOT a pedophile would go for a 16-year old high school girl... oh well.
So my real vote goes for the senpai. smile biggrin bigrazz

» KaoriNite on January 18th, 2014, 6:13am

It was hard for me to decide because it really depends on the storytelling and how well the personalities of the characters match.

I agree with you here. So many romances are cliched and predictable that I find myself wishing for the unexpected couple to end up together, just to make things different.

In the end, I chose forbidden love interest. In my case, I take it to mean enemies who fall in love.

» nunya_bishieness on January 18th, 2014, 4:12am

For me it differs in every case depending on the personality of the character. Mostly I'd go for the guy who isn't a complete jerk. laugh
In this case I voted alien simply because that is something I haven't seen before. smile

Yome ga Kore na Monde. wink

As for me there was no choice I could give 100% of my vote because I have seen various good and bad outcomes... I voted for same age, because the whole
teacher (how about no? it is a TEACHER! hands off either way!),
sibling (it's family! even though he/she is your adopted, half-sibling-half-cousin-hybrid that has no relation to you at all in the end what makes it somehow ok to date him/her),
love-at-first-sight stuff (that really isn't a reason, perhaps attraction-at-first-sight but not love...)
and that useless differentiation between senpai and kouhai (why would a person be x-times cooler just because he/she is one or two classes above? or y-times cuter just because he/she is one or two below?)
makes me kind of aggressive...
childhood friends are okay too but there are also the annoying types... And it was done way too often...

I would have voted either for the "down-to-earth" type or the "funny/crazy-supernatural-ability" type

I share your thoughts completely, even though I'm okay with the childhood friend cliche because I tend to like those kind of stories. I find interesting seeing how a longtime friendship turns into something more.

thread

» tactics on January 18th, 2014, 5:20am

Well. This was tough.

I usually find myself sticking to the main guy x main girl formula. Sometimes it differs, depends on which girl I prefer, but yeah. Any one of those options can be the main person of pursuit xD
I decided to go with same age, but to be honest I don't really have much of preference.

thread

» forgottenone666 on January 18th, 2014, 5:33am

Forbidden love all the way. As the saying goes "If lovin you is wrong i don't want to be right". I like seeing stories about forbidden love and I prefer the girl to be older. So older sisters, teachers, monsters, anything that would be considered wrong is great in my book.

Aahhh, yeah, so sorry, I didn’t know that she (I always agree with her) was the one that suggested the forbidden love interest,
should really read other people’s post here in the news..

Uhm, I chose forbidden love(incest) simply because its kinda exciting, and you know everything about your partner(if you grew up together)

Edit:
I forgot, what I was saying is that I think the siblings should be merge in the ‘forbidden love’,
to narrow down the options..

I'm against this, but that's because of my personal bias against incest. And if you were to merge the incest into forbidden love, you'd have to do the same for the teacher and student options too.

Polar opposites would be nice, not to much age difference (max 10 to 12 year, for adults off course, young adult max 3 years).

» destroyer_ck on January 18th, 2014, 9:19am

Childhood friend because it sounds romantic.
like it's been destined since the very beginning by God.

i mean, it's been destined by the mangaka of course.
Mangaka is the character's god, right?
biggrin

thread

» AceBunneh on January 18th, 2014, 9:48am

Is there a choice for everyone?
Honestly it's hard to say, because for me it depends on their personalities more than their back story. Dx

Moreover it also depends on the talent of the writer, as lately I've seen a ton of horribly done yanderes so I'm a bit hesitant to read any more, but there are some decent ones I'm sure..

Any who, it really depends on the personality, not the previous relationship to the main character.

Childhood Friend

Yes, I'm boring like that. I just feel that is what both characters deserve. Depending on the characters, of course.

I'm the same. I personally think that that they knew each other and built a relationship based on non-romantic intentions first is the best way to start a romantic one. Gives it more depth.

I don't really consider age and social relationship. I'd rather the MC pursue the character whose personality I enjoy. And preferably being decisive about it rather than derping around the whole time either being oblivious or scared of boys/girls or not being able to choose from an unrealistic harem.

» blake77 on January 21st, 2014, 9:46am

I'm another one who would prefer the MC pursue a character with a personality that I like. That's why I didn't vote in this pole. If I was asked which one I dislike the most, then I would have to say close blood relatives.

animal or mystical since this seems to indicate a fantasy manga.

but if i had to choose between the other... it really depends if the MC is a boy or a girl.
also i miss a choice for the supposed looser/winner relationship. (i.e. Kuroyukihime/Haruyuki Arita).

I suppose it's a hypocrisy to say I don't really care even though I voted for Childhood friend but seriously, I don't actually care that much. I voted that b/c I suddenly remembered that some of the best relationships are those that grow from knowing one another from a friendship.

thread

» gwkimmy on January 20th, 2014, 9:51pm

i think it depends on the genre for me. i read mostly bl nowadays, and childhood friend romances there are THE BEST /melts

it's cool in other genres too, but like someone said, it gets really annoying when its the cliched "you promised to marry me and you forgot!!!" garbage. cant they just start friends and slowly develop feelings as they get older?

other times i like older female/younger male 8D

thread

» Cherelle Ashlee on January 21st, 2014, 3:00pm

It all really depends on my mood (even though I chose someone older because I accidentally over looked forbidden love T_T). Most of the time I just chose cliche romance pairings mainly because of the familiarity rather than reading something odd or different I guess, unless someone highly recommends it!

There is a yaoi that started out with a guy who was "in love" with his teddy bear (a male teddy bear) and it was to the point of wining and dining with the thing, showing it its "favorite movie" and other things. It's kind of like a little girl playing with its doll but it didn't seem like that really. It wasn't something playful, it was sincere. But again, it started out like that, eventually another guy forces himself into his life.

forbidden love interest was my choice.... but i like rivals even better, which sometimes fits as forbidden.

childhood romances are lame imo, i don't even remember who i was friends with as a child and am amazed at how this is such a common theme... surely i'm not the only one with a bad memory.
