of a story, but yaoi kind of overwrites everything else.

This is simply a poll asking which is your least favorite genre to read, it's not something that self-righteous losers can use to determine someone's point of view on homosexuality. I personally know a homosexual girl who hates reading yuri because of how "ideal" the coupling seems to her. I guess she's afraid of homosexuals too? FYI, disliking two of the most popular genres of manga, shoujo and shounen, doesn't make you special .

In the end, I chose hentai, because the few I have attempted to read have a plot line and characters as flimsy and 2-dimensional as actual porn, except it is a drawing. Given that real people going at it does nothing for me, it is hardly surprising that I have yet to even finish any hentai that has been recommended to me.
My least favourite non-sexual manga is harder, I dislike a lot of shounen, because it is full of over-done cliches and unnecessary ecchi. I dislike many shoujo manga as well, also because of cliches and the ridiculous girls found in shoujo, whose entire world revolves around a guy, who is usually a d**k. That just annoys me. I prefer shounen to shoujo, because at least fighting is somewhat interesting, unlike make-up. Having said that, there are too many good and bad points in both to really say for certain which annoys me more. Can I just say that I hate bad stories instead?
» SlyzertVoltrond on March 2nd, 2013, 3:22am
That said, anyone who read Hentai expecting a deep plot or interesting characters or maybe good character development are freaking stupid. Sometimes they might have a semblance of either of those, but they are few and far between. Seriously, the only reason to read them is for the amazingly detailed art of females or perhaps you want to see characters that you like naked and doing naughty things (h-doujinshi).
Hentai is Porn, they're meant to be fap and drool over to. They're not meant to be taken seriously, it's therefore very unfair comparing them to normal manga.
» deadphoenix on March 2nd, 2013, 3:36am
How can people chose anyway? I don't think that everyone has read at least five of each demographic, then how can you chose an option?
I would prefer a better chose of words for the manga poll question, the word 'hate' might invoke discriminating ideas.
Wel, I don not like fluffy manga ( manga with more flowers than people, that fluffy stuff). It's difficult to categorize this in a demographic content.

I agree with what was said here, its hard and unfair for people to choose without getting to at least know the demographic well enough to hate it. 'Hate' is too strong a word for something that you are not well aware of. i.e. I can say that I've read at least 5 of each of these demographic(with the exception of Shoujo ai and Yuri), and although I avoid Yuri, I didn't vote for it just because I avoided it.

- heterosexual (not necessarily homophobic) males/females will vote for yaoi/yuri
- people who consider themselves readers/intellectuals will vote for hentai
- the rest will vote for what they actually hate

» ebisu on March 2nd, 2013, 5:59am
I don't really hate any, so picking a "the most hated" proves a bit difficult. If I was asked some years ago I would have gone with yaoi or with josei. I found yaoi unappetizing and josei was just uninteresting, though I've pretty much read a bit of everything at least. There are great manga in every demographic..
I'll go with josei, for being normally weaker (though I know at least one good josei...). Why would you want Josei when you have epic and wonderful shounen seinen?
» tactics on March 2nd, 2013, 6:18am
I avoid Shounen Ai, but I have read manga with subtle hints in it before. I'm not a fan, but I don't mind it very very mild, so I thought I'd choose it's worse counterpart which I know I'll avoid like the plague.
I don't read much Josei, but I'd still give it a shot if I found it interesting enough, and I don't mind reading everything else. Yuri is probably one of my fav demographics
Yaoi is just something I wont read. Ever.

Also, I am really saddened by the hentai hate. Yes, a lot of hentai out there is terrible, but read anything by Homunculus, Osuzu Akiomi, Yuuki Homura, or anything else from the handful of GOOD vanilla mangaka out there and you'll see why there's such a love for the genre.
» dosetsu on March 2nd, 2013, 8:31am
Here's the deal, I hate everything. Out of the three demographics that I actually read/pay attention to, I hate them all. I hate seinen when it isn't interesting, I hate josei when it isn't interesting and I definitely hate shonen when it isn't interesting.
But more importantly, I hate the webtoon genre. I hate it with a passion. I hate it even more as each day passes since I can't filter it out.

Yaoi is full of allegorical sexist tropes and misogynistic behavior acted out by genderless looking men. The whole seme and uke bit is an asexual reenactment of male sexual domination over women.
In addition, if you're female, the I guarantee your interest in yaoi is of a purely purient nature; and to talk about hentai the way you did is the height of hypocrisy.
» loveppears on March 3rd, 2013, 10:28pm
As someone that (somewhat shamefully) reads Yaoi, i cannot really argue with your points.
In fact, not only is there a lot of misogyny, there is actually a lot of homophobia from what I've seen. How ironic, right? i can't even count the amount of yaoi mangas I have read where the freaking SEME OR UKE (or both!) says "ewww homos yuck, that's disgusting. i love u though because i'm in love with you for some reason"
also, the whole "straight guy magically turned gay" thing creeps the hell out of me. then again that probably should be a ~hot fantasy~ for me since im a gay male and all.

You say you have a strong dislike of lesbian themes, but you love watching/reading about handsome young men humping each other.
If you were bi or lesbian, you wouldn't be so averse to yuri.
And (with the exception of tranny strippers) Cherelle Ashlee is definitely a female moniker.

Actually, I've said that its my least favorite, which in actuality means that I do read Yuri.Quite a few actually, never have I once said that I strongly detest them.
Also, P.S: We get it, you hate yaoi and you've already came to the conclusion that only "heterosexual girls" read them. You don't have to start an argument just to justify your own opinion.
» AceBunneh on March 2nd, 2013, 10:50am
At least hentai doesn't present it self as having a plot, and sometimes it actually does have a plot and can be interesting...
Smut on the other hand not so much...
All the same, there is good yaoi too, and honestly I read everything. I don't really hate any genre. x]]
Lastly, if anyone thinks that a genre discriminates and stereotypes against a group (men, women, homosexuals, etc..) then you're a complete hypocrite because you are stereotyping a genre. You can claim it doesn't hurt anyone, but it can spread ignorance and hurt a demographic which could lead to a decline for them, and hurt people financially. Moreover a decline in a demographic could also hurt it's loyal fans and followers, which would hurt emotionally also because of the loss of something loved.
Any who.. I think that's all I have to say. >.>; I'm probably going to go lurk elsewhere now.
» kurokaze on March 2nd, 2013, 11:28am
I have to agree with a lot of people who commented that the word "hate" a bit too much/ strong for this poll. Also it was kind of pointless in my opinion since it's kind of obvious yaoi would be "it".
Now as for me i didn't vote just hit the view button, since I don't hate any of the choices. If it had been which i read the least of it would be yaoi, now don't get me wrong plenty of times i've been attracted to the title and/ or plot but the idea of seeing two guys going at it keeps me away.
Now for those who would imply that doing such a thing is homophobic are just haters trying to start arguments. I mean common if i were homophobic i wouldn't be willing to read much less enjoy yuri since it also involves same gender sexual intercourse.
And last how can anyone hate Hentai. I mean Hentai is awesome and certainly better than porn, you don't have to get annoyed at the non-acting skill you find in porn. Though it is thru that no one watches porn for the acting but still I try to watch porn and get irritated/ annoyed with the acting and stop watching it. And most of the drawn characters are hotter than most porn stars out there.
So those were my two cents

As for me, I voted hentai for very obvious reasons. It's not a knee-jerk reaction as I have read (if you can call it reading) some of them. Shoujo ai and yuri would have probably followed, but it's not a "hate" reaction for these two genres, just that I find the subject matter unappealing.

Actually, that's a common misconception: while the target audience for BL is most definitely heterosexual and bisexual women, I doubt most straight or bi women read yaoi / shounen-ai: why should they when there's so much het romance with better plots / art / characterisation? Only a small potion of heterosexual and bisexual women like BL, all heterosexual men dislike it, and imo quite a few homosexual and bisexual men must have voted against it too, since BL is likely too flowery and female-oriented and romanticised for their tastes.
A lot of heterosexual and bisexual men like hentai; and even if they don't, they still dislike BL more, so they'll vote for that. Ditto for straight and bi women - though I think almost all the votes against hentai must have been cast by the girls, simply because a lot of hentai is obviously male-oriented and of the "average (or ugly) guy gets ravished by / gets to ravish a smoking hot F-cup girl" variety.
As for yuri... Female homosexuality simply doesn't seem to raise as much controversy as its male equivalent; though why, I can't really say. Probably because people seem to think of it as more innocent and "pure" and romantic and "stemming from true love and not the blind lust you find between two men."
As for the accusations of homophobia... Let's face it: most living creatures (humans not excluded) are predisposed to dislike/mistrust/be fearful of things that aren't like them. And since the majority of the world population - the Mangaupdates community obviously included - is heterosexual, homophobia is a given. As long as it's not physically acted upon and is merely inside people's heads / on forums / in the form of poll results, there's not much anyone can - or even should - do about it.
Which brings me to my previous point: this poll is pointless, since anyone with any sense can guess the result. But I suppose I can't really talk because I haven't come up with any good ideas for a poll either
» train93 on March 2nd, 2013, 12:59pm
I kinda dislike Shoujo and Josei, but I did read some good stories from these demographics.
Choosing Shoujo ai or Shounen ai is kinda pointless, because they're just mild versions of Yuri and Yaoi. So it was between Yuri, Yaoi and Hentai. I chose Yaoi because in the other two there are girls at least, but I actually don't read any of them.
I would have chosen Lolicon, though, if there was such an option. I may not like Yaoi, but I hate Lolicon.

I've wanted to gouge my eyes out over how bad/boring some series are (e.g. SDF Macross) but I still can't say I hated it. I just wish I'd never watched it.
So I have to say the genre I feel most apathetic about is yaoi, although I don't go searching for yuri either (anymore, at one point... although I've gone through lots of phases with really obscure genres).
I guess the thing about yaoi and yuri is that 99% of them are just terrible. They're poorly written romances that would be ignored if not for the fact that they include some kind of shallow idealized homosexual relationships for opposite gender heterosexuals. (I guess for other demographics it'd be closer to something like 95%?)
I'd be perfectly happy to read something like Aoi Hana but yaoi. But I'm long past the point where I'd go read a few dozen series to find one I like.
» Joentjuh on March 2nd, 2013, 1:41pm
And, of course, Hentai... And even worse (because it's harder to avoid), Ecchi (+Yaoi +Yuri). Many a good manga story are (in my opinion) ruined by the mangakas need to introduce excessive panty-shots, annoying innuendo, perverted male (these days even female) characters, pointless shower/onsen scenes, and (pixelated) sexual acts.
» Blique on March 2nd, 2013, 2:02pm
I voted hentai, because based on all the manga I've read, hentai got my lowest ratings on average. Josei was very, very close though.
I think it all depends on which specific manga you read though. Josei has the potential for amazing stories, but most josei manga use and reuse a small amount of that potential, leading readers to think that's the best they can do. Same goes for all of the genres.

» kirabook on March 2nd, 2013, 3:57pm
I'm a girl and supposedly we're supposed to find yaoi appealing, but it's just as appealing to me as homosexual girls acting that way towards each other or a heterosexual couple acting that way to each other. It's just gross.
I don't read yaoi or yuri (or shounen-ai/shoujo-ai) but back in the day when I first got into manga and didn't know any better or understand what was going on, it seemed to me that a few of the yaoi mangas I read had EVERYONE homosexual and perverted. That's just unrealistic.
I don't mind if in some random shounen or shoujo there are some or a quite a few characters that are actually homosexual. There are homosexual people in this world who are no different than other characters, that's a normal situation that doesn't give me the creeps.
But some yaoi mangas.... it's just too weird. Too much exaggeration. That goes for a majority of hentai too, but there are reasonable hentais out there. (very very very few) Much of the yaoi genre seems to be over exaggerated, so of this list, it is my most hated.
» PansyWansyLinsy on March 2nd, 2013, 5:47pm
So what, you don't like romance/smut? Better to say that than just to single out yaoi.
Yaoi is about as realistic as some of the shoujo, shounen, smut or hentai titles out there. Yaoi has it's failings as much as the other genres. I mean, are we really debating realism in manga? How often is it that the most popular, smartest, and best-looking guy in high school falls head over heels in love with everyday Plain Jane? And not just one, but two guys when the inevitable love triangle happens?
Yaoi, weird (I'm not sure what your definition of weird is)? Men engaging in sexual acts with one another is too much, but all the tentacle rape that occurs in hentai isn't? Just chalk it up to taste, you don't like reading about homosexual sex, that's fine, but let's not pretend that yaoi is any worse than any other genre out there - especially hentai.
» kirabook on March 2nd, 2013, 4:14pm
The only yaoi I read was by mistake when I was what.. 13/14 years old maybe? I haven't touched one sense, but yaoi is hard to avoid in many fandoms because it seems girls like it so much. I particularly hate yaoi when fanbases depict completely straight men as homosexual (i.e: Kingdom Hearts and Naruto) Not only that, they make ALL the male characters homosexual and the female characters suddenly disappear into oblivion or they all go homosexual for each other as well.
I guess all in all, I don't find over exaggerated sexual scenes or situations appealing. All yaoi probably isn't like the yaoi I envision it to be, but fanarts, yaoi covers, and yaoi fangirls make me think otherwise.
It is strange though. Are girls expected to like seeing guys all over each other like men are supposed to like women all over each other? (And I'm not really trying to get into real life situations here, just in the entertainment manga/anime field here)

It would seem this poll was made to spark confrontations and it's succeeded rather well. The obvious fact is, most females will vote for hentai and most males will vote for yaoi/shounen ai. It's not a thing of real life hate in all cases. It's really just a reflection of how successful these manga are with their target audiences and how . Each genre has it's strengths and weaknesses, so the question should really be "which genre do you read the least?"

I'm confused sometimes how most people who says they hate Yaoi doesn't think themselves as homophobic. Just like it's fine to be gay, isn't it also OK to be homophobic? Not to say that everyone who hates Yaoi is homophobic, just, why is homophobic deemed so negative? Is it reverse peer pressure or something?
» lynira on March 2nd, 2013, 9:40pm
Another reason may be the hatred for BL fans... the stereotype is a squealing and drooling, obsessive, brainless, weeaboo fangirl, and nobody wants to encounter one of those. Whether most BL fans are actually like that doesn't really matter, the mere image of such a repulsive creature is enough to make some people hate whatever triggered that behavior.
As for me, even though I am opposed to the bottom five choices for moral reasons, I wouldn't say I "hate" them... I just think it'd be best for everyone if those kinds of manga weren't around. Anyway, I guess I will pick yaoi, because out of the bottom five, I find it the most annoying. I'm tired of seeing so much of it, and also I find the typical yaoi art style terrible (mainly the faces).

But then I figured out it was more about demographic influence on content. Which genre has tropes you hate that seem to result from a (perhaps misguided) attempt to appeal to it core demographic. Ultimately I went with shoujo because it has the highest amount of cliches and worst of all it's a few send out a bad message to it's young impressionable demographic. That said there is still a lot of good shoujo out there.
I think I maybe should have went with hentai because I still read a fair amount of shoujo where as hentai I pretty much avoid because it's so dude oriented what with the wonky female anatomy and sometimes physics. Not that every hentai is guilty of this but its more common then (I think) it should be to the point I don't think its worth looking for the exceptions.
» Blique on March 3rd, 2013, 10:26am
Way to base your view of an entire genre on one manga.
Comparing shounen ai with het romance is reasonable, but yaoi is completely different. Yaoi is pretty much porn, but tailored to female tastes. There are very few scanlated het manga that can be compared to yaoi. In Japan, there's an entire genre for such "women's hentai", but it's unfortunately ignored by scanlators for some reason.
I know quite a few heterosexual guys who like yaoi. Interestingly, most of them aren't from America...Maybe "gay" is used as such a common insult in America that guys try to stay away from anything that would make them appear "un-manly"?

For the most part, I find that I can't connect with female characters in manga. Perhaps it has something to do with a difference in culture, or with the quality of the story, but I find the way that girls and women are portrayed in (most) manga to be alienating to me.
I'd actually read yuri and hentai before I picked up a shoujo or shounen series. I just can't stomach them. But I think that has more to do with my age group than anything else. If I were 13, I'd love shoujo to death.
So yeah, obviously I like yaoi/shounen-ai the best and I don't particularly care about the fact that people on this site hate it the most. I mean, in English-speaking countries, the main demographic for manga is male readers aged 14 - 24.
» -shiratori- on March 3rd, 2013, 3:30pm
By the way I heard that a significant minority of yaoi readers are actually straight males. And since I cannot imagine a single reason aside from intellectual interest why I would read yaoi as a heterosexual male this is very interesting to me. So, is any one of the yaoi readers here actually male and not gay?
» StaticHD on March 3rd, 2013, 6:46pm
I don't actually hate yaoi. I dislike it, but I don't hate it. What I hate is shounen-ai. All that lovey-dovey male on male crap with a guy having girly eyes and the usual bishi-face and they kiss each other? WTF!!! It's like a girl who reads this YAOI crap WISHES that they had a dick. This fantasy is just tooo out of wack for me. If you girls wish you had dicks, then just read FUTA and spare us the trouble of publishing your homo series.
Then I hear that there are actually male authors who draw this Yaoi or Shounen-Ai stuff Gladly, there stuff aren't even as popular and they don't sell as well as the female yaoi authors. It makes you realize that yaoi and shounen-ai is truly targeted at bishi-loving female dick-wishers.

Yeah because other genres never have guys with girly eyes and bishi-faces, nope never.
Also, two guys being in love is not crap. If you are in love with someone, you are going to want hold their hand, kiss them, or do anything else that is intimate.

Ah, that's easy. Have you ever heard people complaining about bishounen looking more like women than men? That's why. The manga may say they are men, but many times they look exactly like girls, so it's no wonder some straight males may like them. You can even go randomly rewrite the dialog of many yaoi manga and claim that the uke is not a boy, but a futa girl and I assure you that many wouldn't even notice the change.
Now, if we are talking about bara, then things change. There's no way any heterosexual male would like that. If you meet someone who likes bara and claims to be a heterosexual male, you know for sure that he is either bisexual or gay. Seriously.

Hm they don't look like girls to me, but I can see where you're coming from. And yeah the seme and uke stuff is another reason why I hate yaoi. Not only is it sexist as hell if you think about it, but it seems like the yaoi world consists only of top-bottom relationships. This is... madness!
» Sari90 on March 4th, 2013, 6:47am
There are reversible couples, it's done less than the seme and uke thing though.
"Hatsukoi no Atosaki" and "Kyuuso wa Cheese no Yume o Miru" to name a few, have a reversible couple.

Imho hate in any of its aspects is not proper for polls in this cool(till-now) community. We have enough racism, homophobia and misogyny in the RL that to need them here too.
Also the results of the poll from 2008 abt most loved demographic shew that Yaoi is most favoured:
Question: Favorite Demographic?
Choices:
Hentai - votes: 1807 (12.1%)
Josei - votes: 616 (4.1%)
Lolicon - votes: 746 (5%)
Seinen - votes: 2364 (15.8%)
Shotacon - votes: 185 (1.2%)
Shoujo - votes: 2684 (18%)
Shoujo Ai - votes: 282 (1.9%)
Shounen - votes: 1921 (12.9%)
Shounen Ai - votes: 516 (3.5%)
Yaoi - votes: 3069 (20.6%)
Yuri - votes: 742 (5%)
There were 14932 total votes.
The poll ended: October 18th 2008
So as we see no vote result is as talkative as it seems at firts sight. Neither the newest one nor this from 2008.

Thank you very much.

Second this.
What is the point of this poll beside bringing more hate between the different fandoms? As another member stated, "hate" is a strong word.
If you really want to know which fandom is the least liked here, why didn't you put something like "Is there a fandom you tend to avoid?", one of which would probably be more accurate. I mean, most of the people who posted here don't even hate the fandom they chose.

Honestly I've tried several times to read Shounen ai but sooner or later it focused so heavily on the shounen ai aspect.
» sagesmith on March 4th, 2013, 9:53am
I don't HATE any of them, I just like some more than others. :-P shouldn't there be an option for "Don't dislike any?"
I will vote it it has the Shota or Lolita option
I stand corrected. I hate Shota/Lolita manga. Sex with child? How disgusting can you get? Funny that there's probably more yaoi haters than shota/lolita haters...
Also, guro manga or whatever... sickest stuff ever.
I guess there is some manga that I hate...

NOTHING
yaoi on the other hand allways work
i think i need to see penis...being inserted into something to even be remotly interested when it comes to sex

Despite reading heaps of shoujo.
...Probably because, well, heteronormativity bores the hell out of me in most cases.
But this poll isn't accurate or helpful at all. I don't hate shoujo manga, but it made me pick it through process of elimination. I love shounen manga, and I like GL though there's only like two good titles, and I live and breathe BL. There are some really good seinen titles like Kami no Shizuku, and many Josei titles are actually BL in disguise. I don't hate hentai because well, I dabble in that too. /cough
I know that many of the people who picked "yaoi" are not homophobic themselves (well, the genre is a bit homophobic itself with many of its titles) for the most part. But they're made to pick it, and so the 45.5% saddens me greatly.
I have nothing against lolicon~? /more of a shotacon, though. Not the Boku no Pico or Boku no Nick Cage kind, but the Ciel Phantomhive kind where the ten year olds act like 40 year olds.
This isn't a call to stop hate polls, just... Phrase them better, or add a "none of the above" option, geez!
