New Poll - Least Favorite Genre
This week's suggestion from BooXx is about the genre you'd most avoid when reading a manga series. We tend to always use the question of "favorite" in the polls, so what about the one you hate the most?

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Is it okay for guys to have long hair?
Choices:
Only in anime - votes: 1056 (10.3%)
Only in real life - votes: 43 (0.4%)
It's okay in both - votes: 5552 (54.4%)
It's never okay - votes: 514 (5%)
Don't care - votes: 3045 (29.8%)
There were 10210 total votes.
The poll ended: June 17th 2016

I guess certain people can pull it off...

I feel like Ecchi/Hentai/Smut would win this vote hands-down if they were combined into one category. And they sort of are, just to different extents. Ecchi is just milder hentai (but usually coupled with a bit more plot rather than plain PWP) and smut is just ecchi aimed towards female demographics.

A lot wrote that hair care is important or "hard", but i don´t get it. I read up on the topic when i regrew my hair after being in the military and my secret is to not wash it too often, too use volume shampoo and to never expose it to any kind of product or color (i started to get gray hair when i turned 20). I often get envious questions why my hair looks so healthy, so my method 100% worked. Don´t wash it every day, regularly comb it and cut the ends twice a year. Simple and hardly a time sink.

Hentai is a publication form but fine. It´s the least capable of all to offer basic narrative coherence, due to the questionable target audience. Not that Yaoi and Seinen pr0n are any different. They are equally broken. (I would have allowed Shounen / Shoujo-ai into the mix and changed Hentai to Adult.)

I voted harem, which is often involved with "school life" which I try to avoid. There is always an exception or two (for school life), but not for harem. Over it.

Yaoi is demographics not genre... This poll also doesn't include:
Yuri, shotacon, lolicon, shounen, shoujo, seinen, josei, shoujo ai, shounen ai

No, demographic is used to divide the audience by age range, i.e. shounen, seinen, josei and shoujo, or in the west, children, young adult and adult. Genre tells you the contents of the work, which is what yaoi does.

The demographics on this site are weird.

I'd say people responding to threads that have been dead for 3+ years are weirder.

For whatever reason for me it seems to be Mecha. I might have voted Horror, because i don't like a lot of horror mangas, but the fact that i can tell this means that i don't really avoid horror genre (and there are some horror mangas that I liked), while the only Mecha Novel that i have ever read and actually liked is Full Metal Panic, which is more of an exception, because i didn't even care about Mecha while reading it, the sci fi there is high quality though... For most part it is like this for me: "oh it is about Mecha? Boring..."

P.S. actually now that I think about it i have read more Yaoi manga than Mecha. (Even though i do prefer a plain heterosexual hentai and tend to avoid Yaoi and Yuri)

On the list, the only genre I haven't read is mecha. It's a bit weird to call it my least favorite genre though. I don't dislike it per se, I just have zero interest in reading one of these manga.

thread

» MangaGhost on June 18th, 2016, 9:19am

Over the years I've pretty much sampled everything, but some stuff I have no interest in or the genre is stale and predictable.

I read manga for the stories and the art not for fap material so I chose Hentai because I don't have a lot of interest in it. If Hentai wasn't on the list then it would be a toss up between Harem and School Life. After you've read a few Harem or School Life manga the novelty wears off quick and am so tired of predictable cultural festival and beach stories. Combine both and its like a double no-no for me. They are both tired genres for me that seldom surprise or do something different.

Haha, so I didn't see Yaoi or NTR and went with Gender Bender. I don't read gender bender series.

thread

» frodfy on June 18th, 2016, 10:08am

Where is my "none" option?
Seriously, I don't avoid any of them. And I feel each of them has its own charm. Though I don't recall reading any mecha lately...

thread

» NightSwan on June 18th, 2016, 12:04pm

The only genre I actively avoid is Harem.
To me it's pretty much the most pointless plotline of all.

thread

» amy_levi on June 18th, 2016, 12:45pm

Didn't we have this question a few times before already? I'm getting a bit tired of it, to be honest... Oh well, but anyway... There are more than one genre I avoid, like Hentai, Harem, Gender Bender, Mecha, and in general Smut, too (but that depends on the overall story). Not a Sports fan, either, or Romance (in shojo).
Picking just one genre is hard here.

thread

» residentgrigo on June 18th, 2016, 4:01pm

My poll was against demographics wink .
(Harem is my "runner up" choice if anyone cares and i would have also went with it if Adult was up instead of Hentai.)

thread

» RoxFlowz on June 18th, 2016, 1:00pm

Surprised to see Gender Bender leading and not Hentai. While I'm open for any genre, the combination Ecchi/Harem makes me instantly doubt the quality of the series, so I'd call them my least favorite genre.

thread

» chineserider on June 18th, 2016, 2:16pm

I'm surprised so many people dislike Gender Bender. For me personally, it's Horror because I just can't deal with any of that, regardless of how great the story is.

Gender Bender / Slice of Life / Sports

There's nothing I hate more about Japanese works than indecisiveness, and where does it appear the most ? In anything with a harem, of course. I would also say that I simply hate the theme, but it may simply be that I haven't seen any well executed one. It should be romcom, though, but harem has become a synonym of that.

I would even say that, while hentai might be the least capable genre, harem is even less likely to have any narrative value. It's also a genre I don't avoid, though, so I wouldn't have voted for that, but I would second smut for I believe it's only half assed hentai.

Martial arts for me. It's just people beating each other up to see who is better at beating people up at the core of it, and I'm very rarely interested in a character's growth in his/her martial prowess.

thread

» Morrelan on June 19th, 2016, 12:08am

Darn, I chose harem, but I probably should've voted Mecha. I only avoid Gender Bender series if they revolve around cross-dressing guys or anything male to female related.

Ecchi.
Especially this combination: Ecchi, harem, school life

thread

» train93 on June 19th, 2016, 7:08am

Definitely harem, it's bound to be a huge set of overused cliché and no plot, while the comedy could be as good without this particular genre. It also tends to attract the ecchi genre, which I find annoying to say the least. The sad thing is, many harem can hide themselves in the beginning, so that you would realize it's a harem when you've already invested a lot of time in the series (like what happened with Nisekoi). I don't fall for this trap anymore, though, even in the very first chapter of a series my harem sense can start tingling.

Horror and Gore.

I don't mind reading gory stuff, but there are times when it crosses the line ( Looking at you Mai-chan's Daily Life ) .

thread

I avoid tragedy and historical myself. I read most other genres so long as it has comedy or fanservice in it.

thread

» mikako17 on June 19th, 2016, 4:22pm

The only genre I actively avoid is Ecchi because it's pointless and annoying to me. At least for smut, it's pr0n targeted towards females since there isn't really any hentai that does that.

I'm definitely surprised at gender bender having such a high percentage and .1% from hentai since people are so much more vocal about hentai, ecchi, harem, smut, and others.

thread

» nightazday on June 19th, 2016, 11:29pm

Tragedy. Putting it as a tag pretty much ruins the ending and normally I don't want to see the protagonist suffer. At least not without a good reason.

Second most is horror but not for any particular reason (just not a horror fan).

thread

» Jolty Febe on June 19th, 2016, 11:54pm

It's a question of what I want at the particular time, so Hentai even though I voted Ecchi because I prefer stories to be stories and sexual content to be sexual content, and ecchi to be an ecchi focused story rather than casual fanservice. But I've definitely not cared/avoided the ecchi tag, so I didn't think long enough before voting laugh

thread

» Jelise on June 20th, 2016, 8:59am

I didn't choose my least favorite because I'm pretty willing to give anything in those genres (adult/hentai, mecha, ecchi, historical, harem, romance and sports) a try to see if they actually keep me. For me, the genres I tend to avoid are drama and comedy, not because the genre themselves don't interest me, but because I tend to be a little judgmental on what I find funny or if things seem far too dramatic for me to handle. It ended up being a choice on which one am I more likely to avoid if it doesn't seem my thing. In the end, I chose drama.

I choose Gender Bender. Hentai combined with Gender Bender is The Worst of em all(A no-no man) no

thread

» a_v on June 24th, 2016, 11:49am

I would have picked Yaoi easily. Gender Bender can be amusing, one example: Pretty Face.

thread

» tommyhawk on June 21st, 2016, 8:02am

My vote is Ecchi/Smut, I tend to give any anime a try before I lose interest, most times I don't get past one episode of these.
Mecha, ok i've watched some good mecha Full Metal Panic, Evangelion, Escaflowne are a few i'll rewatch but it'll never be my first choice.
Tragedy no I love a happy ending.
Horror dead you lost me, I still can't find the appeal in Death Note
Harem, This ticks me off in all types of ways but I like Tenchi Muyo GXP and Rosario Vampire.

thread

» monixchi on June 25th, 2016, 11:10pm

the thing is, i couldnt vote properly cause i cant just choose one as i cant pick what really is solely my least fave from all of them as i avoid all of them equally. its a little too late but i got to say almost all of the above are the genres i avoid like:

Action
Adventure
Fantasy
Harem
Hentai
Historical
Horror
Martial Arts
Mecha
Sci-Fi
Slice of Life
Sports
Supernatural

basically almost what mainstream anime are flooded with every season. well nothing against such preference really.

even tho i have my own cup of tea myself and preference (such as: Comedy, Drama, Gender Bender and Psychological), im still picky for my own taste. depends on what can successfully emotionally and mentally stimulate me.

i dont mind and im okay with Ecchi, Mystery, Romance, School Life, Smut and Tragedy.
