MangaUpdates 15th Anniversary
Greetings!

In celebration of our 15th anniversary, we’re going to give away 100 $10 gift certificates to Right Stuf International. To participate, you must have been a member on this site for at least 30 days as of noon today (EST), and you must make a post on this news thread between now and 12pm (EST) noon on July 27th. Additional posts do not increase your odds of winning. If your post is deleted due to breaking the rules, then your entry is not valid. I'm interested to see what kinds of crazy topics people come up with to talk about. I will conduct a drawing using a random number generator sometime after, and post the winners' account names. No purchase necessary. This is NOT an advertising campaign. We ask that if possible, you keep this in-house. It’s for previously registered members only.

If I’ve made a grievous legal mistake in the wording or operation of this drawing, please let me know as soon as possible so I can correct it. As a disclaimer, nothing in this post can be construed as a contract between myself, Lamb, or the MU site with any participants or winners, and we retain the right to alter the scope, rules, etc, at any time.

Thank you!
Manick, Lamb, & the rest of the MU staff

Congratulations MangaUpdates! And thank you for all the time the admin and moderators puts into it!

Hopefully you take us on the road of fantastic manga series for another 15 years.

Edit: It's a bit painful but I can't use the gift card because I live in Europe. The transportation cost is higher than the gift card is worth. And Right Stuff International doesn't have any payment option with debit card ( or Paypal ?) And digital manga ( = free shipping) isn't available.
So, I don't want it.

thread

» Manick on July 20th, 2019, 5:55pm

Have an idea for a better europe-friendly website? I'm up for suggestions.

thread

» deadphoenix on July 21st, 2019, 6:00am

Maybe Book Depository? Or Amazon, ebay, etc.
I use most of the time local resellers, they don't cover the whole of Europe. And the shipping cost is lower if you purchase in you're own country.
Book Depository has free worldwide shipping. I don't have experience with it, but you find it everywhere on suggestions.

thread

» Manick on July 21st, 2019, 9:29pm

I'll look into those. Thanks!

Definite congratulations are in order. When I think back all the years ago to when I first started using this site I never thought it would be here still. It took me a couple years just to finally make an account. I have been officially registered for over 11 years and in that time I have only made 22 posts. At face value it would seem that I have barely even used the site, but I have come here almost every single day over all those years. With even the most rudimentary math I put my daily visits at over 5000. I can't express how much I have been impacted by this site. There have been many sites over the years that have attempted to provide similar services, but I believe they all lacked passion. Mangaupdates may seem bare bones (especially if you consider how outside links were purged quite a while ago) but I think the care that is put into what is behind the manga is meaningful. Not settling for simply being some aggregator, I have stuck here for the effort that has been put into mainting the information about authors, serializations, and publications. Dozens and dozens of series that have become some of my favorites were only uncovered because I was able to see authors and artists behind each manga. I can't say that there aren't a host of features I'd love to see come to the site, but there is something very comforting about my routine visits the release page even when nothing is relevant for me. While I'm somewhat ashamed of being such a lurker, I hope my gratitude can at least this once be conveyed. Thank you.

Congrats! to be honest i never really thought much of this site before i started doing scanlation myself but i've found it to be an invaluable resource since and i'm grateful it exists
(btw i can't use the gift card either since shipping to canada is 20 dollars πŸ˜” maybe u want to pick something that offers digital purchases so shipping won't be an issue for future giveaways)

This thread is how I learned what Right Stuf International is! A random Youtube or podcast segment introduced me to them before but I failed to retain anything despite hearing it more than once. I now forever know what that site sells. Is that how waving free stuff works? You suddenly give a shit? Thank greedy lizard brain, I guess.

Congrats on the 15 years! This website was pivotal to my manga obsession during my teen years, so thanks for always being here and being the reliable source of info we need. Man I've been around here for coming up to 11 years!

I'll pass on the voucher too however. Overseas and all that makes it more difficult. I wanted to say something anyway though as this website was a big part of my teenage years after all!

Here's to another 15 yeah? 😁

Can't believe MU's been here for 15 years. So many things have changed and grown in my personal life in the past 11+ years I've been on this site, but MU's been a constant throughout it. I don't read as much manga as I used to, but I always know I can pop in here to look for new series or to just stalk the forums.

Thanks Lamb, Manick, and all the dedicated staff for keeping MU alive and kicking for so long. I hope it stays for many more years to come.

I have been lurking here for a long time, and now feel bad for not contributing enough after having used this site at various levels for the last 14 years (started using this site some months after its initial launch). It's seems to be a little quieter here now than it was 8 - 10 years ago in terms of forum activity, but hey, I'm happy to see things still chugging along, and quiet ain't bad. This site is still indispensable when it comes to helping to guide manga reading, so I hope this site never dies. The reviews on this site (read a lot of barbapapa's reviews back in the day, hope he's doing alright), have helped me a lot.

Cheers to the team for maintaining this online sanctuary. I am so glad that places like MangaUpdates, Fandom Post, and the AnimeNewsNetwork forums still exist in an age that is dominated by spiritually empty social media. Cheers to a Happy 15th!

Amazing how few people actually read the news articles. This was 2 days ago and we only have 40 comments?

To be fair, I don't read them every day, but at least every so often.

Anyway, I do hope this site survives into eternity. The actual aggregators are nice but can just die at any time. So it's really nice to always have mangaupdates to fall back on for discovering which series have updates for me to read. If an aggregator dies, eventually I can see my favorite scanlators congregating to a new one πŸ™‚

» Kawada on July 24th, 2019, 1:03am

Happy anniversary, MU! I've had a similar history with this site as previous posters (been using it for manga info for years, don't use the forum, but can't imagine my growth as a fan without MU), so let me instead present a hastily-written, potential isekai in which this site didn't catch on with people like me who have too much time on their hands:

The year is 2019. Another Anime Expo has come and gone, and in its wake, another solemn groan of dissatisfaction rises from the dwindling US fandom. No one expects any news of interest, but some part of them clings to hope. They hold on to the fond memories of their gateway manga, yet remain fearful of new, possibly disappointing series.

Vizimation Press, sole survivor of the anime/manga Franchise Wars, continues to introduce new Japanese media to the ignorant masses, but to no avail. With no way of knowing whether a new show has its basis in manga, or whether international readers enjoyed it, fans cannot follow further adventures on the go, and thus find their interest dwindling ever further.

If only, they find themselves wishing deep within, if only there was a way to find a new manga similar to my favorite. How I wish it was as simple as finding other works by the mangaka, or searching for subjects like "Bespectacled Main Character" or "Female Dominance", or "Reflections on Human Existence". Such a tool would certainly respark the passionate flame I once felt for this medium. The context and reference it would provide for these new, mysterious series being announced would certainly help me to shatter the ambivalence I feel for new things. I could maybe even see how well-received these series have been, and crush the fear of disappointment within myself.

But of course, this remains a pipe dream. These "fans", if they can still be called as such, continue their empty existence. They will never know how close they came to having such a resource, before the administrators decided the complaints about formatting and image uploading weren't worth the hassle of maintaining such a database. Instead, these wayward wanderers will forget such fruitless dreams and find another form of media to consume, such as random cat videos or movie novelizations.

Avoid this isekai at all costs! Keep supporting your friendly neighborhood MU admins!

Hi MU!

My goodness! Reading through everyone else's messages has made me quite emotional. I too can't imagine my life without this website. I'm so sentimental about it I even have a screenshot of the layout saved on my computer!

I must've discovered MU around 2005? When I first started reading manga online. I probably come here hundreds of times per month! Until last year I didn't have an account, but recently I started scanlating and it feels so good to post my own releases on here. All these years MU has been a part of me and now finally I feel like I'm a part of MU!

Congratulations on so many years of service to the manga community. As others have said, other sites have come and gone, but MU has always been a constant! I hope MU will continue forever!

I don't think I will able to use the voucher either but that doesn't matter. I just wanted to come and congratulate you guys and express my gratitude for all you've done.

Also, I really enjoy the sidebar poll! It's fun! ^^

Can't believe MU has been around for 15 years. I assumed it was 5 older than it is, but hope it'll continue to be of service when the time comes around to celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Been a member here for two years, but have been using MU's services for a longer time.
I was uptight then about not signing up for an account because I didn't think it was necessary when I was keeping my own tabs on the manga I was reading. Low and behold, the records were lost.
And yet I still didn't sign up either then -- the sheer level of stubbornness I had back then.
Took me a long time to finally create an account and now I can barely fathom why I was so persistently set against one.
MU has helped me organize and keep track of all the manga I've kept in contact with and whatnot since then, so I'm immensely thankful for that. Also interesting to read reviews every now and then and see the ratings based on other users' experience. Can't say I've added too much of my own opinions on either, but when I do see my own, it's interesting to see how much of my opinion has changed and what hasn't.

When I first found you about a decade ago, you kept my budding interest in manga alive. Back then there were so many manga, and their titles were so often given in Japanese only, that I wouldn't have been able to find anything good in the vast number of them without you!

Still true after all these years.

Late to the party - but wow can't believe this site has been running for 15 years. Hopefully many more to go!

ItΒ΄s like looking at a mirror.

Some websites just work and don't need big, fancy updates πŸ˜›

The biggest difference between then and now (outside of the recent re-coding of the site) are the introduction categories and the removal of links to scanlation sites. Thank Zodd for that user script. The MU app is worthy of mentioning too... unless no one uses it but I never tried it due to not having a smartphone. Maybe next decade.

Now that we are talking about improvements. Is it possible to make the cover preview script an official part of the site? ItΒ΄s really shiny and chrome and makes the site come alive. There is enough real estate on the right sidebar for links to user scripts (that arenΒ΄t about piracy).

What? It's been fifteen years?! Well I can't quite complain since I only joined five years ago, so that 10 years was already large difference to me already. But wow, time goes by really fast without you knowing. And I'm surprised this site is still booming with activity unlike other sites that can't even last longer than 10 years, its a shock that they were able to make it through but it just dies down afterwards. This site is amazing and have nice users that help you when you're in need of help. The staff is great too, well some I haven't seen in awhile but, yeah 15 years, my god. I wish everyone a wonderful start of MU's anniversary. πŸ˜€

Oh I didn't participate for the deadline, I'm just posting because I want to wish the group a wonderful anniversary ^^
