New Poll - Cheering for Couples
This week's poll comes from icassop. I feel it's an interesting question to ask what couple do you most cheer for in a series.

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related):
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Would you wear manga/anime related merchandise in public?
Choices:
I already do - votes: 3000 (21%)
I would if I owned any - votes: 6911 (48.3%)
No way - votes: 4404 (30.8%)
There were 14315 total votes.
The poll ended: June 30th 2012

If you want some manga/anime related merchandise, go to a convention. And what do you know, Anime Expo is this weekend. Or just order online...

Probably the love rival. In most times, the main couple just simply pisses me off.

I know probably the rest of the world will look up to something like Cinderella romance, but for me? Nope. Status is one thing, but she needs to have both brains and personality. I won't take the tsundere fits of a selfish girl. Or the kind, useless, crybaby tragic heroine that pulls hind legs. They don't deserve!
On the other side, there's alot of times where the guy treats woman like trash, and yet she falls for him... WHY!?!?

Most times I'll end up liking the antagonists more and rooting for them.

Let's just say this, the minimum I require in a relationship between the chars: Trust, loyalty, basic manners and morals, and of course that they fit each other! Forcing two that won't last long together with a stupid reason like "Oh~ My dear Juliet~ I love you~" That kind of thing lol. Did I mention? I hate Romeo and Juliet, traitors to their family. Srry that just popped up in my head randomly lol.

Actually, it depend on character's struggle; who fight the fiercest. Too bad I don't read anymore manga with strong love polygon sentiment. The one that is close to that, which is Kaminomi, has no basis why I should even cheer any one of the girl. Anyway, poliamory isn't so bad.

I cheer for the couple i like the most, i never really keep pattern for that.

I often disagree with the main couple tough.

I usually find myself supporting the main couple.

Sometimes that's not always the case obviously, but I would say 98% of the time I want it to happen XD

I cheer for all the couples! But I voted for main couple because that's who you have to deal with throughout the whole series. bigrazz

» marshy03 on June 30th, 2012, 6:35am

I always end up cheering for the side couples since you know the main couple will end up together in the end but not for the side couples. Plus sometimes the side couples are more interesting to watch too, i usually find myself enjoying scenes of the side couples more than the main couple.

Kimi no Iru Machi made me despise most romance manga. Ruined an entire genre for me. I usually cheer for the main couple and side couples though. I almost always hate the love rival because there's almost always a reason to, i.e. revenge, they're a cheater, etc, but that's usually dependent upon the series.
Pondering up an imaginary relationship between characters is really sad for a straight man to do IMO, so I hope that a large number of women and/or gays are voting. Making up couples is something a middle-aged woman would do with her soap operas. roll eyes

Or anyone who got bored and has a working brain.... and in my experience those who propogate ratarded sexist stereotypes usually don't. So I guess I can comprehend your lack of understanding here.

Agreed! This guy probably lives all by himself under a rock somewhere. What kind of idiot would post something in a public forum that show his prejudices in one go? Loser!

I can't readily prejudge him/her since there are two possibilities;
1. He/She is anonymous, you can't track him/her down, responsibility thus be a minor issue.
2. He/She already has sound argument to back up his/her statement.

#1 is commonly occurred, while #2 happened only sometimes. However, (in minuscule chance that) if #2 is the case here, you two people might get your mouth shut in such embarrassing manner. I usually play with #2 with intention of uncovering naive and crude people; but it's a load of pain to have my argument get through to such people.

thread

» Nirhtuc on July 1st, 2012, 9:08pm

Sound argument? Well, you can count yourself in the same category as him (I highly doubt that the poster was a 'she')! If you're so keen on defending someone who thinks they are authoritative enough to denigrate 'women and gays', I think you're the one should shut up, you faux-intellectual! no

thread

» yuno19 on July 6th, 2012, 7:33am

Is this an invitation for a debate? Because you've insulted me. (Or you can't help but write in such insulting manner). I see you're quite senior in this forum, have been a member longer than me. And I suspect you're past your teen age (I just found out you're 27, not 12). But why this immaturity? You know, I'm kinda pissed upon reading. But I guess you're the epitome example of my #1 case, anonymous and irresponsible; Troll. I bet you're kinda difficult to talk reasonably too. No, I'm not in rage. I'm cool as cucumber toward you. none

about that3rdguy who happen to be the beginning of all this, he already said his opinion is his. Not people generally. He must have some experience/argument to have that opinion shaped in his mind. About that saimne person, I think he/she's intelligent to have his/her attack aimed at that3rdguy in person. And his/her words is well written. About you, you let your emotion get the better of you. I seen you're quite respectable toward gay people. A good thing in my opinion, but having your belief bruised should not be taken as a permission to go on a rampage (if you're intelligent person as you claim to be). It will only shows you don't deserve your age. You know what, I took a pity on you.

If there's no fixed relationship yet, side character for me. I've grown to hate violent tsunderes, airheads, and all those generic main love interest archetypes. Especially when the first girl seems to always get the spotlight. I'd support them sometimes, but most of the time I don't

thread

» NightSwan on June 30th, 2012, 8:34am

Not sure about manga, but I often root for the very cute chick to end up with some other very cute chick in movies.

Doesn't have to be a main or anything. In fact, I prefer romance to be a side-dish.

thread

» Antaliss on June 30th, 2012, 11:39am

Where's the answer "I don't root for anyone but I feel like murdering most of them". There's no need to cheer as the obvious pairings always come to pass after a massive amount of conveniently convoluted misunderstandings. But hey, what can you expect from clueless guys and indecisive girls, who both can't speak up even given dozens of opportunities?

thread

» grandioso on June 30th, 2012, 12:04pm

I like imagining my own couple. Sometimes the main couple is good enough, but other times it's just too forced for me to like it. I usually don't support the rival though.

I cheer for the main couple if I think both characters are compatible. As readers, we are set up to cheer for the protagonists, so I assume we automatically cheer for the main couple? I was thinking the last option in the poll is weird, but realized what it means- I do that too sometimes! eyes

i vote for the rivals.. often in "harem animes", the main character is cheesy and boring such as a childhood friends, and all the other characters are so much more interesting.

My own imaginary couple that I wish would happen. I mostly read romance shoujo/josei so I usually see stupid heroines...which I totally hate. I tend to make my own coupling to keep myself interested. biggrin

thread

» Zina on June 30th, 2012, 9:50pm

It really really depends on the series, but I voted for the main couple. The love rival is fun to cheer for sometimes, but usually that ends up frustrating. It's hard to cheer for something you know will fail in the end. sad
Side couples usually just bother me, because they are often filler. But sometimes they are tear jerking, and I cheer for them.
Imaginary couples, while fun to think about or imagine fanfiction for, are way too impossible to expect to ever happen. Like, I'm not into cheering for something that I know will never even occur. It's like punching myself in the foot. However, the "imaginary couples" that become real are my favourite couples. The ones that you never expect and only dream about in jest suddenly becoming real is the best twist ever.

So yeah, main couples mostly because I don't like dreaming about things that will never be.

Love rival both in shounen and shoujo
(cause there is a 90% that the main character falls for a tsundere)

I tend to pair side characters that look like they have chemistry or look like they'd be a good couple. A lot of times the main couple are just...urgh/boring/cliche/ annoying/you know what I mean...

Side couples that I cheered for from manga/anime that I have recently read/watched: ChunWoo and ShiHo (The Breaker), Musica and Reina (Rave), Claire and Chane (Baccano), Tadashi and Akira (Special A) and lol, even Takagi and Satou (Detective Conan).

I really hate love triangles & polygons, so I generally don't read stories like that. Somebody always ends up hurt... I know real life is like that too, but I generally prefer sugar sweet stories to relax and leave the real world behind, that's what stories are for to me. So I voted 'main couple', since there usually isn't anything else in the stuff I read O.o

also Junpei Manaka x Aya Toujou (ichigo 100%) would have been a pretty cool ending too

REALLY depends on the characters/writing.

Most of the time the couples are blocked by pathetic misunderstandings that somehow manage to stretch multiple chapters/volumes and that flat-out pisses me off (if you're stretching a misunderstanding THAT long, you are not a serious couple, kthxbai.)

That said, I'm a sucker for side couples. Even though they're usually the "sane" ones, they always get the least amount of face time. Call it rooting for the underdog.

thread

» Milleniummaster18 on July 2nd, 2012, 11:27pm

Depends on which couple do I like the most. Usually the main couple's fine, yet not always. Side couples usually get my pick when a story is kind enough to portray the characterization of their romance.

thread

» Jooles on July 3rd, 2012, 3:59am

I fail to see how you can vote for this properly. For scenario-questions like this, context is everything. Sometimes you prefer this/him/her to win, sometimes that/it/the alien in the shed.

thread

» sakura8429 on July 3rd, 2012, 8:54pm

true enough, i failed to find anything to vote for since it's all about contex. i would vote for someone outgoing and fighting (to get the love) rather than someone that is just keep quiet and expect people to understand them (but somehow manages to complicate the relationship). depending on the story, this can be the main, rival or side character

thread

» aagcnet on July 5th, 2012, 6:18am

I cheer for the couple i like, even if they are main, love rival or side... sometimes you feel like the love rival is the one for the main guy/girl and sometimes you feel like the main couple are one for each other.

So i'd love to have a 5th, as theres no 5th i went with the love rival because they are the ones that suffer the most in many of the romance series i read.

Well this really depends on the characters in the story for me, because sometimes I like both the characters of the main couple, and sometimes I like the love rival's character more. What I pick also depends on which character fits the main character better in terms of compatibility. In my opinion of course.
