Kokushokan-kai was established in 1971 to reprint and publish academic books, and began publishing reprinted editions of Meigetsu-ki(明月記) and Gyokuha(玉葉). Since then, Kokushokan has been consistently publishing academic books on history, Buddhism, Shintoism, and Japanese literature, as well as mystery, science fiction, horror, occult, and beautiful yokai art books, all with a motto that pursues “”Kokushokan style“”.
In 1987, Kokusho also opened the Kokusho Japanese Language School. The school has accepted students from many countries, mainly from Asia, and more than 10,000 students have left the school so far.
