Plot/Story
Wealth, fame, and power. Only one man has ever attained all of these things, the King of The Pirates, Gold Roger. When he was finally caught, and set to be executed, he was asked where he left his fortune, known as One Piece. He stated that it was in the Grand Line, and that if anyone can find it, it shall become theirs. On those words, he was killed, and the great age of pirates began.
A young man named Monkey D. Luffy aspires to become the King of The Pirates, and to do so, he sets out on a journey, to find a crew, and form his own band of pirates. But Luffy is not a normal person, he ate the mysterious Gomu Gomu Devil's Fruit, turning his body into natural rubber. However, this ability comes with a cost., he cannot swim, as going into the water is deathly dangerous for all Devil's Fruit users.
The plot of this manga is so great, that I am honestly having trouble putting it into words for you to read. The manga-ka clearly thought out every aspect of the plot. Sometimes it can feel too long, and drawn out., however this times, thankfully, come far and few between. The comedy aspect of the manga goes hand in hand with the action and overall dramatic feel of the storyline. As dramatic as it is, the manga-ka keeps a good aspect of comedy in it at all times, sometimes just to change the pace a bit.
Characters
Very few characters in this manga do NOT have a backstory. Each character has a past, and at some point or another, the main characters of Luffy's crew all have their pasts explained. They each have their own reasons for being there, and Luffy respects that, and often time indulges them on it. In the beginning, only Luffy and Zoro are members, but they get joined later on by Nami, Usopp, and Sanji. Eventually more crew members join, as well. Each member has there own role in the crew, and they are reflected quite well.
Enemy characters, interestingly enough, also have great depth to their character. Most enemies have a past that gets explained, though not in the depth of the main characters. Minor characters also have stories. The manga-ka goes out of his way to make sure each character is unique, and easily recognizable.
Drawing Style
The drawing style is quite unique, and takes a bit of time to get used to. At first it seems weird, but after a few chapters you'll be indulging yourself to it. The manga-ka likes to make weird looking characters, as well. A lot of weird looking characters appear, and at first your wondering what the hell they're doing there. After awhile, you start to get used to these weird characters, and you expect it from the manga.
The artistic style is far different than the standard manga style, as the manga-ka clearly wants his to unique and easily recognizable, and will take some time to get used to, if you can. Often times, you'll either love it, or hate it.
Enjoyment
The enjoyment factor of this manga is OFF THE CHARTS (capitalized for emphasis). Once you get really into it, you'll find yourself unable to stop reading, as the manga-ka has paced the manga quite well. The chapters are all laid out so that it the beginning, you'll be wondering how things in the last chapter turn out, and by the end of the chapter, you'll be left wondering what happens until next time.
Overall
Overall, this manga is one of the best, period. It is on my own personal list of required reading for any anime and manga fan. The drawing style is unique, and you'll hate it or like it, however the wonderful story and easily likeable characters make it more accessible to fans who have already been reading manga for awhile. New readers will probably want to check it out after that have some other reading under their belt. The manga-ka takes good care to keep his manga interesting, as well as keep it flowing.
It should only take a regular reader the first one or two volumes to see if they like this, or hate it. Love it or hate it, you have to respect it for being the most popular manga and anime currently in Japan, and its easy to see why.
Haha, you gave the story a demanding review, which it definitely deserves.
Sorry to say, although you put some backbone into it, elaboration is necessary in order for us to picture precisely what you think makes this story amazing. Things like specific plot devices, twists, things that'll have the reader mouthwatering and ready to sink their teeth in. Perhaps you left these out on purpose for the reader's sake, but I must assure you that they are necessary. Don't be afraid to reveal a few things here and there, this series has been out for a fairly long time.
Great review though, I appreciate anyone who can handle their One Piece with pride, probably my favourite series to the end.
