Plot/Story
Well, this manga is about.... umm, well... the two main characters Eikichi Onizuka and Danma Ryuuji and their long, hard (no pun intended) quest to lose their virginity.
(Two points to those of you who recognise those names from the popular anime series Great Teacher Onizuka.)
After an opening paragraph like that how can you not expect big things (no pun intended) from this manga.
Anyway, I’ve pretty much summed up the plot and story already, so on with the rest of the review.
Characters
Eikichi Onizuka - One of the two members of the Onibaku (Devil Bomb [Daemon Explosion]). Not only is he a fearsome fighter who is capable of extreme acts of violence and who possesses the ability to stand up after an ass-kicking that would fell a man twice his size but he is also a virgin... and for him this is less than desirable.
Danma Ryuji - The other member of the Onibaku... like Eikichi he is stronger than he has a right too be... and is also a virgin. The less perverted of the pair Danma is the strong nice guy but in truth, he’s almost as stupid as Eikichi... these two deserve a girl just for the sheer amount of effort they put into trying.
Makoto - Becomes the Onibaku's unofficial subordinate. Great guy... but he’s a little weak. (Comes "equipped" in such a fashion that he puts All the other guys to shame).
Abe - The series' playboy... - has the potential to bed any woman in existence (and often does) after less than three minutes of talking.
Mariko and Ayumi - placed these two together cause they arent huge characters... actually, besides the previous four the rest of the characters only turn up for a few chapters of spotlight and then disappear. Anyway, these two are teachers who were originally potential targets for the Onibaku's Virginity Losing mission. One is nice... the other is not.
Drawing Style
Old... no way around this. The art is lacking... but after a few chapters you get used too it and anyway, the content of the manga more than covers up for the lack of spectacular art. However,,, despite its style there are occasions when Eikichi and Danma do succeed in looking cool.
The fighting (believe me... there is heaps) is well don’t tho.
Enjoyment
This is a manga to be enjoyed. The just plain amusing. If the subject doesn’t appeal to you... then don’t bother... but you are missing out on a great manga. Despite their constant attempts to get laid Onizuka and Ryuji can both be nice guys (when it comes to women [the former far less so than the latter])
Overall
Good value if you can get over the not great art and seemingly shallow storyline. It’s actually quite an enjoying read.
